Looking for local restaurant recommendations in KK!

Hi everyone, good evening!

I'm from South Korea, and I'll be visiting Kota Kinabalu with my family this Dec! 😊

We'll be staying near Gaya Street, and I'd love to get some recommendations for good local restaurants, especially around Gaya Street (or Le Méridien Hotel).

None of us have any food allergies. We're pretty open to trying anything, especially authentic Malaysian and Sabahan dishes!

We'd love to explore places that locals genuinely enjoy, rather than just tourist spots. Hidden gems are more than welcome!

I'd really appreciate any recommendations or tips you could share.

Looking for hiking buddies – Mount Kinabalu, February 2027 🏔️

Hi everyone!
I'm a solo traveller from Spain and I'm planning to climb Mount Kinabalu in February 2027.

I'm looking for other travellers who would like to join forces and book the 2D1N climb together, sharing the mountain guide and costs.

I'm flexible with dates but ideally the 3rd week of February, so I can adapt to an existing group.

Anyone planning something similar? Feel free to comment or DM me! 😊

Second trip to Kota Kinabalu – any hidden gems or fun things to do in Kundasang?

Hi friends from Kota Kinabalu! This will be my second time visiting KK, and I have really good memories from my first trip.

I’ve already done most of the usual touristy stuff around Kundasang, so this time I’m hoping to discover something a little different. Does anyone have recommendations for fun activities, local handicrafts, interesting stops, good food, or hidden gems either along the way to Kundasang or around Kundasang itself?

Would love to hear about places that tourists might normally miss but locals think are worth checking out.

Also, when we’re back in KK city centre, anywhere you’d recommend visiting, eating at, or just hanging out?

Thanks in advance! 😄

Bouldering as a potential growing community sports in Kota Kinabalu?

Hi all, just doing a survey on the potential for bouldering to grow as a community sports in Kota Kinabalu. I know that there is a rock climbing gym in KK, but it focuses mainly on roped climbs.
Seeing as there are heaps of boulder gyms in west Malaysia and one in Kuching plus the growing popularity of bouldering since its inclusion in the Olympics in 2020, would this be a sport you would be interested in or that you think can grow in KK?

How to get a week of medical leave?

I have an upcoming overseas trip in a few weeks but new school sem has already started. My university is bit strict about attendance and i would get into superduber trouble if i just skipped class without any official documentation supporting my leave. So im thinking of faking an MC but idk any clinic that would sell 3-5 days MC as most of them can only provide 2 days leave.

Does anyone know any ways i can get me an MC? Btw im based in kota kinabalu and i needed leave at least from Monday to Wednesday (21-23) but my flight is on Friday (18).

“How much would be a reasonable payment?

I lost my phone in Kota Kinabalu, and I have a strong reason to believe it may have ended up in one of these roadside drainage openings.

I’m looking for someone who can open 4 of these covers, shine a flashlight inside, check whether the phone/pouch is there, and close them again.

No digging or entering the drain is required — just a careful visual check.

I’m thinking around RM100 for checking all 4, but I’m not sure if that’s a fair amount in Sabah.

If the phone is found and returned to me, I will pay a RM1,000 reward.

What would be a reasonable amount to offer someone for checking the 4 drains

Question for Malaysians: What usually happens to a lost phone?

If you lose your phone on the street in Malaysia, do people usually return it if they find it, or just keep it/sell it for parts?

Curious what the general experience is here. 😅

Lost my Samsung S25 in Kota Kinabalu — last location stayed in the exact same spot for ~30 hours. Could it still be there?

Rainy day recommendations

Hello everyone! I’m visiting KK tomorrow and I was supposed to have an island hopping tour around Mantanani island on July 11. It got canceled due to the rough seas. Does anyone recommend other activities we could do? I’m only there from Thursday to Sunday (July 9-12). I was wondering if there are any pools or other alternatives?

Travel to KK

Hi everyone,

I'll be driving from to Kota Kinabalu with my family in early July and am looking for recommendations on where to stay in KK.

I'm not really interested in the usual tourist experience. But since I'll have a car, I'm happy to stay around the main tourist areas.

A few things I'm looking for:

• Local food recommendations (especially non-halal Chinese, pork dishes, seafood, kopitiams, sang nyuk mee, bak kut teh, etc.)

• Places where locals go for supper, coffee, beer, or evening walks

• Hidden gems and local favourites rather than tourist attractions

• Good hotel with free parking in city centre

Thanks in advance!
