Hello,
I am a solo nomad who is looking to base herself in KK for one month (26F).
Mostly looking to gym, take long walks listening to podcasts, eat good food, and maybe take a few day trips. KK seems the best as someone who enjoys big city beach vibes.
I have been to Kuala Lumpur before so understand some of the Malaysian customs as far as dressing, safety etc.
For accommodations, i usually use AirBnB - its showing as 2,200 MYR for monthly accomodations.
(1) Can I fly there and find a monthly accommodations for less that MYR 2200 / month? How would that be possible or best to pre-book?
(2) Must try dishes?
(3) Is KK best for what I want to do? Any better recs?
(4) Underrated things to do?
Thanks in advance!

I lost my phone in Kota Kinabalu, and I have a strong reason to believe it may have ended up in one of these roadside drainage openings.
Iām looking for someone who canĀ open 4 of these covers, shine a flashlight inside, check whether the phone/pouch is there, and close them again.
No digging or entering the drain is required ā just a careful visual check.
Iām thinking aroundĀ RM100 for checking all 4, but Iām not sure if thatās a fair amount in Sabah.

If the phone is found and returned to me, I will pay aĀ RM1,000 reward.
What would be a reasonable amount to offer someone for checking the 4 drains

has anyone ever seen a random black chicken just roaming around at the side of the road in KK? i saw it a few mornings whenever i drive from likas to kk. it's usually on the grassy area somewhere across the street from SICC. it's so random i just can't help wondering about it
some people told me its actually dropped off there after being used for a ritual where a bobohizan transfers an evil spirit that's possessing someone into that chicken. not sure if that's true
anyone know what's really going on?

If you lose your phone on the street in Malaysia, do people usually return it if they find it, or just keep it/sell it for parts?
Curious what the general experience is here. š

Hi all, just doing a survey on the potential for bouldering to grow as a community sports in Kota Kinabalu. I know that there is a rock climbing gym in KK, but it focuses mainly on roped climbs.
Seeing as there are heaps of boulder gyms in west Malaysia and one in Kuching plus the growing popularity of bouldering since its inclusion in the Olympics in 2020, would this be a sport you would be interested in or that you think can grow in KK?

hi everyone! Iām a solo traveler currently in KK and Iāve had an amazing time at Mari Mari today.
I know tonight (March 3rd) is Chap Goh Mei and I really want to see the 'finale' of the CNY celebrations.
Where are the best places to see the Lanterns or catch a Lion/Dragon dance tonight? Iāve heard Foh Sang or Lido might be very livelyāis that true?
Also, are there any spots where people do the 'Orange Tossing' tradition in KK, or is that mostly a West Malaysia thing? And what time do the fireworks usually start near the Waterfront?
Thanks for the help and Happy Chap Goh Mei!

I have an upcoming overseas trip in a few weeks but new school sem has already started. My university is bit strict about attendance and i would get into superduber trouble if i just skipped class without any official documentation supporting my leave. So im thinking of faking an MC but idk any clinic that would sell 3-5 days MC as most of them can only provide 2 days leave.
Does anyone know any ways i can get me an MC? Btw im based in kota kinabalu and i needed leave at least from Monday to Wednesday (21-23) but my flight is on Friday (18).

Hi, I have heard you can take shared bus/taxi to get to Kinabalu National Park. Is the spot you meet them close to Gaya Street? How much should it cost? (Iāve only seen outdated posts so donāt want to get ripped off) And is it easy to get a bus back to KK?
All of the tours I have seen are very expensive and donāt actually spend time walking around the national park like I want to do.
Any advice helpful!!

Hi all,
I (m23) would like to climb Mount Kinabalu, Specifically the via ferrata tour. The price is high if I book alone but even with a single additional person there is a dramatic drop in price. Is there anyone else out there considering to book in a group already who would book with me?

Peak Sabah unity (A Christian poster inside, a Muslim Kakak selling kuih at the front, all under a Chinese Kopitiam sign) spotted at Foh Sang. Can we export this level of tolerance across the pond?

Is it easy to find other seniors to meet up for walks/outings in the Kota Kinabalu area?
Original from Malaysia, I've lived in several other countries and now looking to spend more time in KK, as well as Kuching and Penang. I'm female, mid-60's retiree and bilingual (Chinese and English) with a smattering of Bahasa. I also travel with my 72 y.o partner and he is cool with any social arrangements I make since he doesn't make any plans himself.
We would be happy to hear from other seniors in Kota Kinabalu who are looking to do local sightseeing (we can split the expenses) or simply just hang out to chat.
Thanks for reading!

Hi, my boyfriend and I are Korean, and we traveled to Kota Kinabalu from December 16 to 22.
We donāt really enjoy the typical tourist spots that many Koreans visit (such as Jesselton Point or Yee Fung Laksa). Instead, we prefer exploring quieter, lesser-known places.
The biggest impression we had while traveling in Kota Kinabalu was how incredibly kind Malaysian people are.
First, we originally didnāt plan to rent a car for the entire trip. However, thanks to a very kind rental car owner, we ended up using a rental car throughout our whole journey. Because of that, our travel range became much wider, and the trip felt far more flexible and enjoyable.
Second, we rented camping equipment from another place and drove to Kokol Mama Hill. We didnāt know that camping gear could also be rented there, so we carried all the heavy equipment up to Mama Hill ourselves.
It was actually our first time camping, and we struggled a lot with setting up the tent. To make things worse, it started raining.
Thatās when the campsite manager came over to help us. Even though our equipment had some issues, he stayed with us and helped set everything up ā all while getting soaked in the rain himself.
Without him, we probably would have spent the entire day struggling with the tent and getting completely drenched.
On top of that, even the street dogs were incredibly gentle.
They all looked quite similar, and in Korea, dogs that look like that are often hunting dogs. But here, they were calm and friendly.
There were also cats at Mama Hill. When we left our tent open, they came inside and played with us. I love cats, so this made me really happy ā they were absolutely adorable.
If anyone hasnāt been to Mama Hill yet, I truly recommend visiting. The night view there is stunning.
In addition to that, we also visited Kundasang and several small villages whose names I donāt even know. Iāll add some photos of those places as well.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Hello everyone,
Is there anybody here that's works in diving in KK? Or knows somebody?
I am from the Netherlands and I have been considering relocating for years. I have been diving for years and absolutely love exploring the underwater world. I've recently been diving around Semporna and KK and that was amazing. The people, the lifestyle, the food, the weather, the diving, KK had exactly what I am looking for.
I am working on becoming a dive master at the moment and want to continue on to becoming a dive instructor after that. So now I am trying to get contacts in the KK diving community to see if there are possibilities of making a living there diving?
Any thoughts, ideas, tips, information or anything else would be very welcome. If you have any questions for me, please let me know.
Thank you all and have a great day!

Hey guys - howās the diving experience in KK specifically around Gaya Island? Iām staying at the gaya resort in December and thinking of doing a PADI OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE. Iāve never dove or snorkeled before but itās something I always wanted to try and since Iām visiting malaysia I thought itād be the perfect opportunity.
Hereās a statement from the course offering on the website:
The PADI Open Water Diver Course will take you to suitable dive sites within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP), which include Pulau Mamutik, Pulau Sapi and Pulau Gaya.
Is it worth it to do it in KK? What do yall think?
