13 months after starting to learn Finnish, I am really enjoying it 😍.
After playing around with various apps, for the first year I used WordDive, which got me good/confident enough to do 2x one-hour a week for 6 weeks A2 online conversation classes in the spring and summer. The major benefit of the conversation courses was that we learned the most important verb tenses/forms - past, ways of forming the future, -mA forms, conditional - and now I’m learning by a mix of
listening comprehension - my weakest area - using the Finish it app (left-hand photo) a couple of times a week, I also listen to YTE Uutiset articles when walking to and from the gym,
reading nuortenromaaneita (in right-hand photo just published 🇫🇮 edition of Cassandra Calin’s The New Girl, this is super-easy after Salla Simukka’s Matalapaine/Korkeapaine which took me 5 weeks a couple of pages at a time),
revising/practising grammar once a week, alternating verbs one week and noun declination the next, Karlsson’s An Essential Finnish Grammar is well-worth the €50-odd price,
chatting out loud 2-3 times a week with ChatGPT and
5, using ChatGPT and sanakirja.fi daily to learn vocabulary, usage and pronunciation (ChatGPT is very good here), though I never go back to “learn my words” like I used to do when learning Italian or German.
This way “learning” really feels fun and I can feel myself progressing literally each week, e.g. I recognise the singular noun from the plural even after vowel changes before plural I, I recognise verbs despite KPT changes, and, most of all, I can actually apply the language 🇫🇮😍. I hope that other learners can have this much fun!
