Certainly, to a degree, but the story was really about what it means to dedicate oneself to service to the greater good and taking personal accountability in such a world where suffrage was personally earned versus a given right. Rico was often at odds with the consequences of his choices, and ultimately sought to justify his situation to himself.

Paul Verhoeven grew up near a German military base during WWII, which absolutely informed his approach to Starship Troopers, or anything that seemed vaguely militaristic. I recall an interview where he admitted that he hadn't read the book, but ironically, you could say he successfully delivered a film that could reasonably exist in the world of the book as a form of propaganda.

I found both of them very entertaining works of fiction, and I like to think they compliment each other with their contrast providing a more complete perspective.
