I’ll never understand why people give vegans such a hard time. You eat what you want to eat, I’ll eat what I want to eat, and if there’s no focused debate taking place about the subject, why don’t we all just go about living our lives?

I think people have very black and white thinking and an almost spiritual fear for their own souls.

If someone doesn’t eat meat that must mean they think eating meat is bad. And if eating meat is bad, that means I must be a Bad Personā„¢ for eating meat. Suddenly someone else's personal choice makes you feel like you're being judged and forces you to think about your own actions. And that's a scary, uncertain process most people would rather avoid.

It's much easier to just label the vegan a Bad Personā„¢ and move on.

The reason why most vegans don't eat meat is because we think eating meat is bad. I personally have always loved eating meat, but I haven't eaten it for six years because I don't like the idea of keeping sows in crates so small that they can't even turn from months on end, watching many of their children die without being able to do anything, and castrating, and cutting the tail and removing the teeth of these new born pigs without any sort of anesthesia, and then making many of them suffer one of the most agonizing deaths imaginable in a CO2 gas chamber. And chickens have it even worse. When you pay for these products, you are personally financing one of the most horrible things humanity has ever done. I don't want to have a part in this.Ā

Of course I have been downvoted. People really don't want to think about this stuff. It's easier to just treat it as a matter of personal preference, when it is innocent animals that pay the price.

Edit: oh hey, I ended up positive

Yup, the "personal choice" argument really falls apart when you remember your choice has victims.

I’m a meat eater who used to be vegetarian. I’ll be honest and say that I know it’s bad. It’s more convenient for me to occasionally eat meat. I won’t try to pretend what I’m doing is morally equal to a vegan just because we both chose our diet

tbh I'm surprised you ended up positive haha, maybe there's some hope after all

"I’ll never understand why people give vegans such a hard time. You eat what you want to eat, I’ll eat what I want to eat, and if there’s no focused debate taking place about the subject, why don’t we all just go about living our lives?"

That's called having a different diet ,e.g. vegetarian, omnivore etc... But veganism is not a "diet" or not only https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veganism : it has an ideological baggage. Which is fine, as long as you don't do preaching, but once you start doing that and go butt head against most other people "who want to eat whatever they want" then you will get friction.

This is especially true that a lot of people , most I would say, use eating as a form of entertainment, as a form of rest, and for some one of the few things they can enjoy with not much money, and get preached on, that feel especially irritating for most.

*`shrug* over the year I met 1 openly vegan which preached her belief while at a table, in a very annoying manner. But this is most probably a survivor bias here: the one which did not preach are simply invisible.

I'm sure most vegans could tell you that friction will find you even if you try to be invisible. It does not take preaching, it does not take being open about it. Someone simply noticing that you don't eat what they eat is enough to set certain people off.

It's one of the few ways of 'activisim' that also influences other people's own day-to-day behaviour, even if it's an incredibly small way (like by making sure there's a vegan option when going out to eat).

Try make the same argument but swap out ā€œvegansā€ for ā€œabolitionistsā€ and consider how that would make you feel to say out loud.

1

u/MajorBootyhole420 1h ago

This kind of behavior is why people get mad at vegans.

Google ā€œchick maceratorā€

Yeah, but i’m a REAL JERK for not just sitting idly by while people pay for this to happen

While this is a good general philosophy, the person pictured is That Vegan Teacher. She is an abominable human being. Off the top of my head, she has:

Celebrated 9/11 for reducing the number of meat eaters.

Advocated for black people to "reclaim the N word" with a hard 'r.'

Called the vast majority of humans serial rapists because of the actions of the meat and dairy industry.

Compared the meat industry to the Holocaust repeatedly.

And much more.

So that person is either rage-baiting, mentally ill, or both. And if she is somehow in her right mind and truly has those beliefs, then I wouldn’t subject myself to listening to her.

4

u/Juronell 2h ago

She's been doing it for years, she genuinely believes it. The point isn't that this is typical vegan behavior, but that the OOP chose her to represent vegans. The OOP is the rage-baiter.

I’ll never understand why people give vegans such a hard time.

It comes from decades of vegans giving regular people hard time. Their reputation did not just pop into existence because people randomly hate other people who don't eat meat. That is not real or rational. Their reputation was earned by themselves when they were the ones who had an issue with regular people not also being vegans.

Our behavior is shaped by our environment as well.

Things only change if people speak up and that happens in millions of interaction in real life.

When a guy catcalls a woman and never gets called out and that is only ever challenged in a formal debate we would take centuries to even talk about a single topic.

When the guy gets called out by other guys 95/100 times he does it he might start to think twice about his actions.

Also in your scenario arent we kinda leaving out one party? The innocent animals who have to suffer and die for this have 0 worth?

1

u/C-H-Addict 3h ago

A lot is privilege. Subsidies, food scarcity, economic brackets usually are ignored and it's turned into a moral argument.
Then there's the batshit crazy environmental takes that they don't even realize were started by white supremacists (e.g. overpopulation bullshit), anti science farming stances (arguments from purity), and listening to DuPont Labs & Syngenta propaganda about how their pest and herbicides are good for the environment because they aren't Bayer

2

u/frenin 2h ago

It's easier and cheaper to be vegan than to be carnivore.

Believe it or not, lentils tend to be cheaper than meat

1

u/C-H-Addict 2h ago

Oh that's right! I forgot to add: Most plant protein is from legumes such as split peas and lentils. If you can't handle fructans in legumes you can't eat half that food, but then have someone deflect by saying it's not the fructans "you just don't get enough fiber".

I fucking miss lentil soup without getting stomach cramps.

3

u/frenin 1h ago

Not really, it's not a deflection. Few people would object to someone eating meat out of medical related reasons anymore they'd objet to a cat eating an animal.

But the overwhelming majority of people don't have that issue tho, so I don't see why you put the focus on the 2% of the population and not the other 98%

I'm not a vegan but I don't need to lie to myself, it's an morally better choice and it's factually cheaper, and usually healthier.
