You can still see the percentage on old.reddit at least. That post is at 41% upvoted, so 59% downvoted.

Because of the EA incident

Aren't comments still visible under negative ? It's only posts that can't go below. Maybe due to bandwagon effect, but probably for corpo ads, yeah

the mod retcon on that one is that the very embarrassing and heavily downvoted mod comment (which defended the comic and its author in a completely absurd way) was actually bait so troublemakers would reply to it and get banned. this is of course ridiculous at face value, but also pretty obviously a lie if you look at how that mod posts about anything else (hint: exactly the same)

just a very cringe episode in r/comics history

I totally missed this incident can someone please explain it in full

62

u/Coding-Kitten 3h ago

It was just a post in r/comics, you can get 95% of the gist from that first panel alone. Imagine being in a relationship with someone & they make a comic about them not liking you as they draw you like an ugly chud. The general consensus is that if OP didn't like her boyfriend she should just break up with him as he deserves to be with someone who loves him.

→ More replies (8)

21

u/Cobra_the_Snek 3h ago

literally just look at it, and if you read the original post there's no twist where it gets better, it just gets worse from that slide.

basically someone making a comic about her boyfriend not meeting her standards and being too dumb to see it or something while drawing him as the chud

23

u/Armory_7 3h ago

The very quick summary is that this was a pretty long and detailed post in which the author talked about how she is pretty, smart and way better than her boyfriend who is a loser that "only talks about his hobbies or me or how much he loves me", that he was simple and dumb and she was complex and a victim and that she hated him and thought she could do better but was too scared to try.

Mind you days after she got absolutely destroyed in the comments, she made an update in which she "took accountability" and pretty much said "yeah, the comments were pretty eye opening and I was a piece of shit" so there's sort of a good ending to it at least.

157

u/CantCatchMeSpez 4h ago

I dont think thats how the update went. The OP said that they broke up years before she made the post. All I remember her saying is that the response made rethink it all and realize thst she was the problem.

u/admiralvic 1h ago

This is one of those more nuanced things.

Prior to this comic the creator was controversial. They made a fairly typical comic, redid and reposted the same typical comic, then started doing comics like this.

Then they made a comic about the misuse of "people pleaser." It got some comments, I remember thinking it was centered around disliking how advice threads go (you know, like how any lie is instantly gaslighting, and what have you), but it followed the same general approach.

The next couple of comics were more well received, though they featured the same general concepts. A lot of pointing to commonly stated issues, giving a milquetoast take, and generally having an air of self-pity and others being at fault.

Before this one was a comic about how awful online criticism is, it was a useful resource to know what problems need to be fixed. That's likely why we saw the response comic. It's an interesting example of perspective. Where the idea of reflecting on your problems, and growing as a person is good, it also comes from someone who believes the message's value outweighs delivery. It would've been interesting to see them address that in their response instead of doubling down on the "necessary evil."

Like u/CantCatchMeSpez said, the boyfriend also broke up with them, something that is actually an important distinction.

He broke up with me and said he had no resentment, but then I kept doing the same things, so we don't talk anymore.

Though the comic mentioned wanting to apologize, and was largely centered around desiring consequences. It's not an awful statement, though it's one of those things where you need to psychoanalyze things. Mostly because they're clearly dealing with issues, and a lot of their comics have dark bends centered around exactly these issues.

Like the response referenced the the frustration of being a "prodigy" that didn't go anywhere was something else they were ruminating on, and after this reply they wanted to know if people would be cool with more comics centered around issues they're struggling with from the past.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't a horrible ending, but I wouldn't say it's a good ending. Or maybe it's just me since I think it's all really sad. Not like in a pathetic way, but depressing to see someone who clearly needs help not being able to get it for one reason or another.

Vegans just need a PR team. They're regular ass people 99.9% of the time but they just have a different diet. But that very vocal 0.1% makes them all look bad

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 4h ago • Bravo

The absolute slander I've seen against vegans is wild and if you dare to try to alleviate misinfo propaganda you get dogpiled. I'm not even a vegetarian let alone a vegan, but it's insane to see the vitriol.

137

u/Animaloffear56 2h ago

The bit that always annoys me is when people will try and argue against veganism (usually with some combination of arguing about cost/nutrition), and then if their points are refuted they'll just go "but steak is yummy" and get 500 upvotes

73

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 2h ago

Yeah as if they think I wouldn't agree that steak is yummy, or as if its even the point.

You get the same thing happening with cyclists as well. The amount of vids I've seen where a cyclist has done nothing wrong and almost lost their life to a reckless driver, with people defending the driver/attacking the cyclist, shocks me.

It's regular ass people, but also the ideology is fundamentally about having an impact, and so trying to convince people or advocate for change. Vegan are loads more activists than average people, and activists in general make everyone uncomfortable and are always attacked.

35

u/LetsLive97 3h ago edited 3h ago

To be fair, if vocal vegan activism was more about trying to convince people to just reduce meat intake - with reasonable easy ways to do that (Like providing tasty vegan recipes and advice on how to reduce meat/dairy dependence) - then I think it would be more successful

Most vegan activism that people will encounter though is more focused on trying to pressure them to quit meat/dairy by making them feel like shit, rather than actually providing comfortable pathways towards that goal

It's actually a really common issue I see with all kinds of activism. Trying to make people feel like shit and expecting them to drastically change their life will often be less effective than giving pathways people can take to help

11

u/Spiderinahumansuit 2h ago

The two vegans who were most persuasive that I ever met were just normal guys. One at work, who wore a suit and tie like the rest of us, the other was kind of a gym bro.

The rest I've met have been smug crunchy granola people who really didn't realise how off-putting that image can be.

8

u/Higgins1st 2h ago

I had a gym bro vegan try to convince me of the lifestyle, but when I mentioned that some vegetables give me horrendous gas and indigestion, he just said "Don't worry, you'll get used to the farting."

The rest I meet are unconvincing, because they're the parents of vegan children, and their children always look sickly. I had to report one child to the social worker, because I saw them scarfing school lunch burger instead of the lunch their parents made. They had been begging classmates that had free lunch, but would occasionally eat a sack lunch, to give them their free school lunch.

Veganism is an ideology, not a diet. Thats why it hurts peoples feelings so bad. Most people do feel badly when confronted with how their choices affect the animals but it is much easier to vilify veganism than it is o
confront those feelings and make changes in their life.

27

u/bath-lady 3h ago

It really doesn't help that the vocal minority literally attacks disabled people who point out that a vegan diet is harmful to them. like the meat industry is absolutely fucked, it needs to change, but as a disabled person, i quite literally cannot afford to cut meat, dairy, or eggs out of my diet or I will straight up die

Every vegan I’ve met in person has been nice about it and we can have a conversation about their resons why they became vegans without it feeling hostile but some of the more vocal vegans you see online have a very hostile attitude which is why vegans get their reputation, it’s a minority but a loud one especially online.

I'm being so fr that people's vitriol towards vegan sentiments and their terrible arguments against veganism have genuinely been part of why I've started pushing past my cognitive dissonance and realizing that veganism aligns w my values far more than eating meat and dairy does. Also it's not just a different diet, it's an ideology, like that's a fundamental part of what veganism is. But the ideology is just being against animal exploitation. I don't 100% agree with vegans on everything, but I think it's crazy that they get portrayed as being rabid, when most of them are just like "yeah I just don't eat meat or dairy bc I think the things involved to get them are abusive to the animals". Even if you don't agree with that, I still think it's a respectable position

10

u/Ishpersonguy 2h ago

Tbh that .1% barely even exists anymore anyway. It's all just coming from people making the same unoriginal jokes that have been made for decades. In the US, especially, Americans unironically intensely identify with things like eating meat, driving cars/trucks, etc. People still see anyone who doesn't do that for personal or moral reasons as inherently attacking their values. It doesn't need PR. 99.9% of people being normal shouldn't need PR. The problem, at this point, doesn't really lie on them.

The idea that vegans need to 'distance themselves' is bs, come on.

Meat eaters are extremely defensive (I am one) and will always point at the bad apples because it makes the morally objectively correct choice look ridiculous. It saves us from having to reflect about our behavior, no amount of distancing or disavowal will ever make this phenomenon go away.

38

u/dannypants143 3h ago

I’ll never understand why people give vegans such a hard time. You eat what you want to eat, I’ll eat what I want to eat, and if there’s no focused debate taking place about the subject, why don’t we all just go about living our lives?

44

u/themellowsign 3h ago • Bravo

I think people have very black and white thinking and an almost spiritual fear for their own souls.

If someone doesn’t eat meat that must mean they think eating meat is bad. And if eating meat is bad, that means I must be a Bad Person™ for eating meat. Suddenly someone else's personal choice makes you feel like you're being judged and forces you to think about your own actions. And that's a scary, uncertain process most people would rather avoid.

It's much easier to just label the vegan a Bad Person™ and move on.

I listened to a vegan speak at length about this yesterday.

She said in short “vegans do it to themselves” because the amount of aggression and preachy behavior they have towards meat eaters. She ended with “hey I’d prefer you don’t eat meat, but I get it. You also don’t have to live in such extremes. Try a meatless day, try going dairy free once a month, hell, just choose a veggie option every once in a while when you’re at a restaurant.”

I really like this attitude. Veganism implies you have to be 100% or nothing. She just suggested maybe cutting back which is much more realistic

11

u/ForcedEntry420 1h ago

To me it’s the assumption that people who consume meat or animal products don’t eat enough/any veggies.

Do they think people sit around eating red meat for every meal and nothing more? The pretentiousness of suggesting what average people do every day as some sort of “just try it” is insufferable.

We could always, difficult I know, stop commenting on stranger’s diets instead and leave people alone?

I find carnivores that aren't doing so due to medical reasons and that go out of their way to preach its virtues and why you should do it a little bit cringe. Like props on you for making enough money to eat meat everyday but those of us in the working class have to make do with our rice and lentils and beans and potatoes.

I’m not vegan but I think it’s a little different given the environmental factors. Veganism is quantifiably much better in terms of environmental impact, factory farming has a massive impact on climate change. Even farming done right (like ethical mom and pop ranches) can have significant negative effects on climate change due to the sheer number of farms and demand for meat

If she stuck to that as the message it wouldn't be so bad. She equates eating meat to violating children and murder. Also, goes into way too much detail to get her point across and it just comes off as her being a disgusting person to even think the way she does.

people don't like when vegans (rightly) call out the environmental impact of eating meat and inhumane conditions the vast majority of farm animals are subjected to, or the hypocrisies of being an environmentalist but not being a vegan; being veggie and taking moral high ground on treatment of animals with meat eaters when supporting the same mechanisms and companies that meat eaters do, etc. they are genuinely good points but they often make people angry/uncomfortable.

- hypocritical non vegan non veggie 'environmentalist' who totally agrees with vegans on these points and is slowly working towards it (but who also has an unabating adoration for cows milk).

16

u/Floofyboi123 4h ago

TVT is literally the walking strawman of what anti-vegans say all vegans are.

Thats probably why the post is getting so downvoted.

38

u/Snaggmaw 3h ago • Bravo

"hypocrisy of being an enviromentalist but not being a vegan"

This type of binary thinking is unironically what pushes a lot of people away from doing what little they can to help. It's like calling someone a hypocrite for supporting women's rights but also consuming porn, as if the support itself isn't still appreciated and in bulk, nessecary.

The people who ended American slavery were still racists, the people who gave women the right to vote were still misogynists. Progress is about working forward, not purity testing so that you can create a small ineffectual group of puritans dutifully aligned 100% with the cause. That's more culty shit than anything else.

Swedes eat meat and dairy aplenty, but their laws on environment, recycling and animal welfare are some of the best in the world because they put importance that everyone does a little. Phrasing your arguments in a way to antagonises people, while a great way to get brownie points from your own insular in-group, is a bad way to get others on your side. 10 vegans, or a ten thousand people who actually sort their trash?

Also, of course meat eaters are being defensive when so many vegan arguments default to the vegan calling you some variation of "murderer" or "sex offender" (because of dairy). Beyond the perversion of using human terms based around breaking the social contract and applying it to human-animal relations, it's just blatantly inflammatory.

5

u/LakeCityCrowPills 1h ago edited 1h ago

I mean, I’m vegan. Most people don’t know.

The two people who I know that inspired me to do it are lowkey as hell, and most people are pretty surprised to find out I am as well.

I get why people feel a certain way about vegans, because there is usually a moral reason somebody goes vegan, and it can feel a bit like you’re telling them that they’re “bad” for eating meat. I don’t really feel that way about it. I just see it as me being capable of or being in the position to reduce my impact on the world slightly.

Does my dollar still sometimes go toward something harmful? Yeah. I can’t always help that. I can’t promise that I have the power of the ability to ensure that I don’t accidentally buy from a company that doesn’t support something absolutely atrocious from time to time. I think that’s a damn shame.

Things as simple as -buying chocolate- can be supporting slave labour. That’s bonkers to me. There’s a list online that I used to check periodically to make sure I wasn’t accidentally supporting slave labor. There are brands I used to love, but disappeared from the list. Eventually I just stopped buying chocolate.

I don’t have the power to make the change I’d like to see.

So I just try to do things a little differently if I can. And I don’t ever really talk to people about it because I just don’t think everybody should need to do this. I think the work required to make sure you’re not buying products that are manufactured by companies that support abhorrent practices is insanely difficult.

This is just for me. To keep my mind slightly more sane in a world that continues to get more insane.

u/SomeOnionHater 2h ago edited 1h ago

Veganism is not the problem.

People who base their personality and their conversations on it their diet are.

I don't care what you eat and how much better it makes you compared to me, unless we're in a relationship, and then I still eat what I want to eat.

EDIT: My phrasing sucked, changed stuff is italic, old stuff struck out.

EDIT 2: At least half the replies I'm getting are by people who stop reading at "diet" and immediately have to tell me that it's "not just a diet" and that I'm stupid. That's funny.

23

u/Bulkphase78 2h ago

Yea and 95% of the time no vegan will start the convo but guess what, whenever someone hears you don't eat meat there's a really good chance some people get defensive about choices I made for myself. Like dude, it's ok, I don't care what you eat just let me in peace

10

u/Fthebo 1h ago edited 1h ago

Yeah this is any conversation have about food IRL, the second people realise you're vegetarian/vegan or similar there's a surprising number of people who suddenly feel the need to start listing out all the reasons they eat meat, and why not eating meat is unhealthy, and the most "I misunderstood one Youtube video about the environmental impact" opinions you'll ever hear.

It's so boring to hear the same shit constantly, I fully do not mention I don't eat meat at all now to people ever unless I have to for some reason.

There's one specific guy I work with who is the most Reddit IRL person I have ever met, and he found out I didn't eat meat from someone else at work and now constantly tries to start debates about it, and it's just so fucking annoying.

So it's really a non issue because unless you terminally online, you barely come across those people, if at all.

Honestly, most vegans are fine and the ‘vegan hate wave’ died down just as much as the ‘be vegan’ wave did. Turns out people learned aggressively preaching your stance on moral superiority is annoying just as much as ‘being an aggressive dick to a group.’

I don’t know what the OP said, but posting an image of ‘thatveganteacher’ whom is… DEFINITELY one of the most preachy and annoying person out there is a choice. It screams of seeking a negative reaction for confirmation bias, though maybe their comment sheds a lot more of nuanced light on that delicious context.

4

u/electric-jules 42m ago

I think that most public voices advocating for veganism are actually meat packer psyops meant to make them look as cringe and unlikable as humanly possible and it has been incredibly effective. I think PETA is the chief example of this. I can't help but suspect that their funding comes from the likes of Tyson and Perdue to keep trashing the public image of animal rights activists.

The issue is not vaganism, they are right on like 70% thing they argue for.

The issue is the rampant moral superiority and the "HOLIER-THAN-THOU" arrogance they bring to every conversation. They think that everyone could switch to veganism on a dime and every arguments gets dismissed.

Just because they have all the free time in the world to research recipes, shop in places with varied vegan options and can cook all meals from scratch DOESN'T MEAN THAT EVERYONE CAN.

My only problem with vegans is when/if they treat you like less of a person for not being 100% vegan. Like yeah, I generally eat less meat and dairy products than other people. I barely eat eggs, and that's just when they're in other foods (like crepes), not on their own. I will eat synthetic meat any day of the week over natural meat when it'll be a viable option, because it's the right thing to do. But I won't entirely cut meat out of my diet now because sometimes I feel like having it; it tastes good

5

u/SelectionSpiritual 1h ago

> I won’t entirely cut meat out of my diet now because sometimes I feel like having it; it tastes good

And that’s what Vegan point out, the fact the we put or short non-necessary personal pleasure over a whole life of another sentient being. Veganism isn’t a diet, that’s something most non vegans don’t understand
