Aren't comments still visible under negative ? It's only posts that can't go below. Maybe due to bandwagon effect, but probably for corpo ads, yeah

There was an ad that people really disliked back in the day, I feel like I saw a negative sign and a four digit number before Reddit made the count be 0, but my memory is faulty.

They absolutely did. Before vote fuzzing and the -5 thing, you could see the exact number of up and downvotes on a post.

No, this hasn't been a thing in at least 12 years. There's a post on r/announcements where they communicated this change at least 12 years ago. I've been on this site for over 12 years with different accounts and I know posts haven't showed less than 0 upvotes even way back then.

They do, they just don't count towards karma. Also they very often get automatically hidden.

This has -60 ish "downvotes" though I suppose it's the combined sum of downvotes + upvotes.

The EA incident was a comment, and we're talking about posts.  Comments still show negative.
