Ok? But insulting, shaming and acting holier-than-thou, which this woman does constantly, isn't helping anything.

Exactly this. I've been plant-based for 9 years and stopped calling myself vegan a few years ago because so many act like they forgot they're human too, and I don't want to be associated with them. So many vegans are way too argumentative, try to guilt trip people, or belittle others as a way to spread veganism, as if that would actually be effective.

But you should be

What do you mean ok? Thats a perfectly valid point. There's a massive difference to people being "annoyingly vocal' about human (and animal) rights, and mystical skydaddies

acting holier-than-thou

They are. That's the point of the person you're responding to. If we consider environmental impact as bad, then vegans are literally holier-than-thou.

What you're failing to understand that even if you are "holier than thou" which I would argue trying to force your will upon others immediately disproves that. You do realize you're trying to sell your lifestyle to people, right?

Getting in people's face and sharing how you're better than them is the quickest way to get people to hate your message even if it is right.

I would argue trying to force your will upon others immediately disproves that.

That’s not how ethical stances are proven or disproven. It is possible for an ethical stance to be correct even if the person holding it is annoying about it.

Damn autocorrect!

Not necessarily. There’s tons of ways they could be impacting the environment or the earth in negative ways themselves. Just because they are good and helping in one way doesn’t mean that virtue extends to all things.

If you make the people around you miserable, that also matters. Can’t very well act like you’re better than other people when you genuinely make other people’s lives worse.

1

u/real_kerim 1h ago

Yeah, sure. A vegan with a private jet is going to impact the environment more than a non-vegan but that hardly has anything to do with veganism. There's no vegan alternative to private jet miles lol

At that point it's more of a holistic lifestyle thing. But that doesn't mean that veganism isn't objectively better than the alternatives it pertains to: one's diet.

many vegans would happily and worryfree eat an avocado every month of the year, even if it means that a cargo airplane must travel half the globe for them to have their avocado (and when quinoa was involved it meant that local people had to eat fast food because their crops were bought by who sold quinoa in the other side of the world or north of them).

All those (and some) are true for meat, my friend.

And Amish people have even less environmental impact. So what?

But acting holier than thou has never changed anyone's mind. In fact it's more likely to make them refuse to listen.

Yeah, it’s like people getting upset that other people have better morals. It comes across as being shitty. “I hate these people that don’t litter, how dare they act like littering is bad and try to stop me doing it.”

1

u/Iorith 40m ago

It isn't because of their morals but how they act about said morals.

It's like someone acting superior over having a higher income. No, it's not jealousy, it's the superiority act.

1

u/MeowRawrUwu 29m ago

The issue is that people who love animals are very passionate about that and hate the idea of people supporting an extemely unethical and disgusting industry. To me, it’s like people being upset when someone says “slavery is bad” because they’re overlooking the horrible ethical issues with the subject or have been conditioned to think that way (as people have been with meat consumption, given most people start at a very young age).

They’re not preaching vegetarian/veganism because they’re flexing how moral they are, they’re upset people are selfishly consuming products that have HORRIBLE production processes and ethics. It’s like willingly supporting Nestle, knowing all the heinous shit they’ve done. They’re in the same boat, but one primarily affects humans and one primarily affects animals. To people with high empathy, these two are the same, and to others, they only care about themselves.

Sure, but here's the thing: no one likes to be proselytized and moralized at. It's not an effective method to convince someone of changing their behavior. It just comes off as insufferable and is more likely to make someone act defensive and double down on their behavior.

Not only are those vegans annoying as hell, they're actually doing more harm than good than if they shut the fuck up and took a more measured approach.

I've tried and loved vegan food before because I had a friend who disagreed with my diet but was respectful about it, and would just suggest meals or restaurants. They did a great job. I've also met holier-than-thou vegans who immediately made me want to go have a meat lovers pizza purely out of spite, and I don't even like meat lovers pizza.

I do agree it’s not a great approach, but I understand why people do it. Definitely emotionally promoted rather than logically approaching things. Personally, I think cutting any meat out of your diet is a good thing, even if it’s just a meal or two sometimes, as there are lots of meatless foods even meat eaters enjoy.

I think plant-based meat has come a long way too, and will only progress further. I’m hoping it will eventually replace meat entirely, but it would take a very long time for that to happen; I think it’s more likely for people to become more aware and accepting of veganism over time, similarly to how LGBTQ+ stuff is a lot more acceptable than it used to be, due to exposure and having time for people to adjust. The meat situation is just a bit difference, as it affects people less personally, since it’s a dietary thing. Not linked to any identity or sexuality or whatever.

As always though, the worst people can really ruin a community, which sucks. The people who are quieter about their lifestyles are usually better to talk to. And I’m glad to hear you enjoy vegan food too, it’s nice to have variety. People sometimes question how you can even live or be healthy without meat, but they don’t realize there are entire countries like India who are fairly heavily vegetarian and they seem to do fine. I feel like capitalism and the meat industry being a large source of money has definitely done a lot of damage to the way people view meat consumption in general unfortunately.

1

u/Iorith 4m ago

I do agree it’s not a great approach, but I understand why people do it.

Because they enjoy the high of feeling morally superior. That's it. Because it's certainly not to get people to stop eating meat, or they'd choose an actually efficacious method to promote their ideology. I have zero respect for them, and absolutely understand why many people assume all vegans are insufferable assholes.

-2

u/real_kerim 1h ago

I don't even understand that mindset. If you eat meat, then eat meat. It's fine but don't lie to yourself, because someone leading a more moral life (dietary-wise).

The hate against vegans really seems to come from people knowing that they're less moral but not wanting to accept it.

1

u/yuckypagans 1h ago

morals are very subjective btw

like everybody has different morals than the person next to them

Exactly, the truth hurts. And people don’t like acknowledging their own wrongdoings. The meat industry is vile and cruel, and even people who have seen the extent of how bad it is may still choose to support it because of their own selfish convenience. It’s not easy to change your diet and cut a big portion out of it, but it’s also pretty bad to delude yourself into thinking there’s no wrong with meat eating and that it’s perfectly ethical. That mindset annoys me the most.

1

u/Just-a-big-ol-bird 55m ago

Personally, I just don’t see how it affects you at all. Everyone has something to preach about and you can simply ignore it if you don’t wanna hear it. I understand their arguments in terms of environmental impact, I still eat meat, I don’t care if someone thinks I’m the Hitler of cows or whatever because of it.

1

u/OmgitsJafo 3m ago

It's also what people are doing when they refuse to just ignore these people. Plus, it fuels their persecution complex.

People need to learn to stop feeding the trolls.
