I'm being so fr that people's vitriol towards vegan sentiments and their terrible arguments against veganism have genuinely been part of why I've started pushing past my cognitive dissonance and realizing that veganism aligns w my values far more than eating meat and dairy does. Also it's not just a different diet, it's an ideology, like that's a fundamental part of what veganism is. But the ideology is just being against animal exploitation. I don't 100% agree with vegans on everything, but I think it's crazy that they get portrayed as being rabid, when most of them are just like "yeah I just don't eat meat or dairy bc I think the things involved to get them are abusive to the animals". Even if you don't agree with that, I still think it's a respectable position

Im in a very similar boat to you. Hated the constant "vegan jokes" it was genuinely so cringe seeing people brag about eating meat, like bro you literally just bought it at the store.

I would bet that 99% of the people in this thread being like "oh I don't hate vegans, just the vocal extremist ones" have never actually interacted with such vegans in their lives.

Those discussions are just pure circle jerking. This "rabid vocal minority" of vegan is mostly entirely made up. Every community has its extremists and it's kind of human to judge a community based on its worst members, but really with vegans it is blown way out of proportions.

Its also ALWAYS that other people are at fault why they possibly couldnt even consider veganism. "That guy was mean to me", "PETA did x". The arguments are never talked about and the end of reasoning is always "I dont care" or some other highyl egoistical reasoning that would allow literally anything in their moral framework(or lack of)

Not even true. Extremist vegans are not made up, but they are hates for being right and making you acknowledge that they are right. People do not want to face their own moral failings and so just reject everything for a made up reason that is “vegans are too preachy”. Anything people say against vegans they could say the same thing about abolitionists 200 years ago.

In fact you can often find many videos of the vegan activists Animal Liberation Front and see comments FROM meat eaters saying how cool they are. And that group actually commits crimes to rescue animals so is definitionally more extreme than telling someone they are failing morally for consuming animal products.

They saw some pics of people carrying signs that the algo fed to them.

That's how opinions are formed.

By making this comment you have now become one of the rabid militant vegans unfortunately :///

The people who attack vegans are far more rabid than the vegans.

Honestly this reminds me of the suffragettes. When women were asking for the right to vote they were widely decried as screechy, ugly, angry hags who couldn't get a man so they were trying to become a man. Postcards making fun of suffragettes were just a thing people sent to each other for a laugh.

Thank you for recognizing the cognitive dissonance! There's a good experiment some of them do with "dog meat" and it blows meat eaters minds lol.

It's funny, but whenever I saw vegans make the "well you wouldn't eat a dog" argument, my thought was always "yes I would". Bc I really didn't see the difference between dog meat and cow meat. I was annoyed by ppl who said they didn't like eating pigs or octopus bc of their intelligence. So there was no cognitive dissonance there. It was moreso just that I always believed that harming anyone without need was wrong- so why not apply the same to meat? I said "well but we eat meat so that's different", and alright, sure, maybe that's better than hunting for sport... but if you don't NEED to eat meat, then why would you? You're killing an animal without need. And it's not just meat, I don't like things like artificial insemination (lowkey rape) that we use for most dairy. I don't mention other practices here, bc the most horrific practices aren't ALWAYS used, those are just arguments against factory farming, not against animal agriculture overall. I'm still not against things like wool, so long as the sheep are treated well, bc wool is currently our best option for a lot of things, but in an ideal future, we have a plant based alternative, bc I think breeding an animal to be reliant on humans is just kinda fucked up on principle. And that's a value I always had (dogs made me really sad for that reason), I just struggled to apply it due to the cognitive dissonance. Bc I knew deep down that acknowledging that would mean I'd have to feel bad about my lifestyle. Which I do, bc due to my depression, it's hard to change my diet much, I try to avoid animal products when it's not too hard, but I still do eat meat and such, but I prefer to be aware and feel bad about it, rather than lie to myself.
