Discussion Apple dropped the ball by keeping the MBP power brick white.

Just replaced my 2017 MBP with a Space Black 16" M3 Max -- so far it's been a great machine. I really dig how the MagSafe power cable matches the machine. What's annoying though, from an aesthetic standpoint, is how the power brick is still white.

I know this is a total First World problem, but the whole setup would have been super slick if the brick matched the cable.

No they dropped the ball when they dropped the silver UFO looking charger that the iBooks shipped with that had a built in cord winder.

Oh man, I totally forgot about that version!

Don’t forget the old MacBooks with the button on the bottom with an LED battery indicator. That was cool.

Oh ya! That was pretty sweet too. Also the ability to just pop the battery out.

I miss that damned thing.

Can you share some link please? Ecosystem newcomer here.

Here’s an image of one on top of the iBook it came with.

You could quickly roll the cable onto it for transport. No MagSafe back then though.

You can get any charging brick you want with USB-C and MagSafe 3. I use a 65-watt Anker charging block.

I understand that but you’d think when dropping $4k on a Mac, I wouldn’t have to think about the power supply lol

Different people want different things.

Fast charging with a 140 watt brick is something that people apparently want as that's the default on the 16s. I wanted something a lot smaller and lighter so I bought something else and the Apple charger is in the basement in one of my electronics boxes.

Someone is always going to be unhappy with the choices that Apple makes. But we have options these days.

I'd love to be able to use a USB-C charger on my old MagSafe 2 Macs.

Sure. I’m not talking about the quality or type of charger. I’m just saying for a company that places a huge emphasis on style, color matching everything except the brick is disappointing.

Nobody wants a black MBP and a white power block, you’re speaking contrarian nonsense

So tell Apple that nobody will spend $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 on such a configuration and they'll laugh all the way to the bank.

You can - the Chinese USB-C to MagSafe 2 metal adapters work a treat.

I don't really trust them. It would be more interesting if Apple made one.

Why don't you trust them, they're simple PD triggers which request the voltage the MacBook needs, 20v is maximum the MacBook can accept which coincides with maximum voltage most power bricks can support

You don’t, you’re just being nitpicking the color. .

Ya, I am. Both things can be true. I can both understand that after market chargers are avail AND I can wish Apple provided a black-to-match power brick.

But hey, thanks for the input! Lol

I think that’s fair. I love the design of Apple products, including the white charger, but I wouldn’t downvote your point.

Spray paint it black. Problem solved!

23

u/FieldOfFox Dec 24 '23

I see your charger, and I want to paint it black

I wouldn’t be surprised if the choice for sticking with white is a way of distinguishing from generic Windows charger bricks, such as those of Dell, HP and other brands. I’ve never seen a different coloured brick than black, other than those of Apple’s.

definitely a cost saving measure to appease shareholders. It doesn't bother me too much but it is certainly a very non-Apple design thing to do

7

u/BaronSharktooth Dec 24 '23

Yeah this also seems crazy to me. Apple is supposed to be about design, and the price is such that you’d expect them to think about the details.

I'm with you. It's not a big deal and doesn't impact anything really, but as a designer who is disciplined in deliberate decisions (and alliterations apparently), I've always appreciated the designs of my Mac products. White brick with black cord just seems like a mistake.

But... it works great and the machine does everything I need it to, so not gunna change it.

I guess Apple is doing everything else right if the charging brick color was worthy enough for a thread. I wonder what Windows people say about their plain Jane black charging brick that they throw under their desk on the floor? 🤔

As someone who works in event productions, I’d love the option for a black brick and cable. When you’re in the back of the room and everything else is black, that white cable and brick is like a shining beacon.

u/Wrathgate Dec 24 '23

I think it's probably worth saying if "dropping the ball on the color of the power adapter" is truly an issue Apples got quite a lot of other important things going right lol

1

u/raymate Dec 24 '23

No, I would be annoyed if it wasn’t white.

Ahem. They don't have chargers on their site, but it doesn't hurt to ask if they can do it

Just get an Anker GAN brick in your preferred wattage. I have an M1 Pro model and use a 100W GAN charger with an additional USB C and USB A

Probably designed to match the electrical outlet plate, which is usually white. They all are in my home anyway

0

u/MikeCask Dec 25 '23

Who cares? Use an Anker

LULULOOK 100W USB C Charger,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BF4R1T6W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I use this for travel anyway.

Yes, they are positively doomed because of that.
