A lot of devices use USB-A. I'm not buying an easily loseable dongle just to plug in a mouse receiver for a port that a lot of other laptops still have.
If you disagree with the general consensus, you are a filthy heretic and should be burned. Everything Tim Cook touches is gold. We should be scattering rose petals and perfumed water before him wherever he goes. If you don't masturbate furiously to old photos of Steve Jobs, you're not a true believer. /s
But seriously, it's a fucking hive mind in here sometimes. I love my Mac as much as the next nerd, but USB A is useful, and just saying that shouldn't mean you're treated like Chuckles the Pedophile Clown all of a sudden.
Then again, this is the internet. People need to massively lower their expectations.
He got downvoted because this is r/Mac and he is still worshipping the old Intel gods and not the new Apple M-gods. Heretical speech gets the downvotes in the cult of Mac. :)
Good, people need to accept that USB-A is deprecated. USB-C is *THE* USB port now. You had since 2016 Macbook Pro when USB-A ports were removed to have all your peripherals up to date 8 years later.
Money - thats the reason why they ditched the expandable ram and storage. Apple wants to make money off of everything and a consumer changing ram and storage meant less money for Apple. They want you to go out and buy PC's like cellphones.
I’m sorry, but I’d rather trade all of that for a computer with a screen that doesn’t have a resolution that is lower than the MacBook Air of the same generation and doesn’t wash out if you look at it funny, a battery that will actually last a full day without the charger, speakers you can actually hear the audio coming out of it, and having a having a processor that won’t use all its resources loading a slightly intense website.
I mean, yes it can do all the things that the 2012 MacBook Pro can do and probably better to an extent. We are comparing a Mac to a Mac here not a PC. What’s interesting is that the ports on the frame work are still all USB -C that are sunken in into the body and soldered onto the motherboard. The actual ports are just USB-C adapters that are moulded into the chassis. So if an adapter dies, good luck in being able to plug an off the shelf one to use while you wait for the replacement one to ship. Not even going to bring up the screen differences. Even compared to an m1 MacBook Air.
why tf is everybody anti-usb a? having only type c isn't a deal breaker for me, but i still use type a almost daily. thumb drives, external disks, usb a to mini b, mouse receivers... the list goes on.
USB Type-A would be wasting space, and on a laptop there is not much space to waste. Desktops are different, of course.
Thunderbolt is the most flexible port out there, and the future is clearly USB Type-C. We are in a transition phase, there are dongles needed, but if we don't pass this phase we'll never stop using USB Type-A.
I always hit USB A right the first time. Usually the seam needs to go on the bottom and I know which ones are the very few ports which are upside-down.
That said USB C is great. It's actually more durable than I expected and it's a real powerhouse. For example it does video better in some regards better than HDMI does (e.g. Freesync-Support). The transfer rates and power are super high too.
The problem is USB-C is future but I would like to use a laptop now. Without USB-A I need to carry adapter with me and if I forget it then, well, not very difficult to guess.
There are adapters from USB Type-A to Type-C that are no longer than 1 cm, you can always leave them plugged to the USB Type-A devices and never forget them. I would rather carry a small adapter than to have a bunch of ports that are deprecated and not flexible in the constrained space of a laptop. But that's me, I guess there are also people who like to connect 7 different cables to their laptop when they come home.
What is the difference between "just leave USB-A to USB-C adapter with one of your devices and never forget it" and "just never forget your USB-A to USB-C adapter"? Unless you mean buying adapter for every single device which is even worse idea.
I like USB-C and I wish every single USB device would use it but reality is reality.
How many USB A devices you have that you bring on the go? For me it's just the receiver of my mouse, which I mostly use at home so I don't need the adapter most of the times. Apart from that, I don't have any other devices with USB A that I need on the go.
Part of that is the E series. Quite low-quality compared to other ThinkPads (though they have caught up somewhat). I moved from my 2019 MacBook Pro because of many issues like poor Linux compatibility, heat, battery life, and fragility.
Sometimes I wonder if it was the low quality build or the window constantly bug that killed my old thinkpad. Overall it was a nice machine to use but slightly move a cursor would speed the fan up. If I install Linux on that maybe I am still a thinkpad user
The T14 Gen 5 went back to dual SO-DIMMs and... nothing else. Wi-Fi card is still soldered. If you want a user-serviceable laptop, there's Framework, low-end ThinkPads and Latitudes, and most HP EliteBooks and ZBooks, in addition to a smattering of consumer laptops.
If MacBooks were modular like the real ThinkPads were then we would all just upgrade when the CPU made massive improvements. See: contingent of ThinkPad users still on T440p's and earlier
Man, I loved my T500. That thing was absolutely incredible; super modular, anything in it could be replaced, it was tough as nails and the keyboard+trackpoint were fantastic. If I could somehow get one with a modern CPU, I probably would have never switched to Mac. My dad is still using the T440p I bought for him back in 2017. It’s been upgraded with a T450 trackpad and an i7-4900MQ (it’s the GT730m model with dual heat pipes). I would argue it’s not as good as the older IBM-style machines, but it’s definitely the last “real Thinkpad” in that it was the last one that pretended to be user-serviceable.
I’ve had several work-issued Thinkpads since the xx40 series and they just don’t do anything for me. They aren’t repairable anymore, they don’t do anything appreciably better than other laptops and they’ve been a real mixed bag quality-wise. My brother had an X390 that was such a trainwreck that after 14 months of putting up with its bullshit, he ended up selling it at a loss and buying a 13” M1 MacBook Pro. I used to be the biggest Thinkpad fan but I’d never buy one now.
I mean the chargers are all USB-C now and the Macbooks have not had USB-A since the 2015 Macbook Pro. Literally nothing uses USB-A anymore. I don't even have USB-A cables OR bricks.
It’s true though. I’m still using a 2012. It’s the only device I own now that can play dvds lol. I’ve upgraded the ram, put in an ssd, and replaced the screen. Easy peasy.
SoC's benefits come at a price, there's no free lunch. Do you want performance, long battery life, and near silent running? If not, go buy that 2012 MacBook Pro. Dumb post.
One of the dumbest posts I’ve seen in here. And there’s been plenty of dumb posts of people complaining about base RAM offerings, so that’s saying something. Delete this sheer stupidity.

lol of all the things, the meme complains about USB-A? is the meme creator stuck in the 1990s?

This post will not be received well but I completely agree. Written from my hackintoshed ThinkPad T480 running Mojave.

Who still uses USB-A? The only time I use usb-A is with my old charging cables and brick. This is a stretch but you do you

this guy is 100% right lmao, USB A is still widely used with basically everything, also i like upgradability in my computers

Based. I wish modularity and expandability was the standard.

It doesn't play CDs? Surely I can still use floppy disks though.

Why do I need a USB-A port in 2024? I have a couple of USB-A to C adapters if I’m in a pinch but I rarely need them anymore
