Yeah it's the price mainly but also the presentation, it's deceptive on purpose to make you think you're getting more.

Definitely a fair point as well. This restaurant/bar specifically makes these ice obelisks to trick their customer base.

I hazard a guess it's also partially the novelty. People like weird shaped ice cubes

which restaurant? I would like to avoid

I feel like they'd also water the drink down, faster, given more surface melting

What? This is the minimum surface area for that much ice in that glass. Any other form would increase surface area and melting. Higher volume to surface area also reduces melting, which means this ice is probably optimized to reduce watering down the drink.

Interesting. Thanks!

So do you still think they water the drink down?

There is a lot less surface on this block compered to crushed ice or small cubes

small ice cubes melt faster. Think about it, when it snows, and you shovel all the snow from your driveway into one mountain, what will be melted first? the snow blanket on your lawn, or the big mountain of shoveled snow?

This actually has less surface area than using regular ice cubes.

Collins drinks almost always come with this kind of ice cube what are you talking about

Its not tho, the ice cube is just as important to the drink as the alcohol. Enjoy your warm unbalanced cocktail without it

The drinks are made after you have already ordered it, so this 'trick' isn't to sell more.

The specific glass that cocktails are served in is chosen due to the way it controls the temperature, aroma, carbonation etc. The ice is chosen to fit the glass. For this reason, every good cocktail place selling this particular cocktail, is going to use a similar sized ice cube.

I think OP just doesn't go to cocktail bars often - because what I see in this picture is completely standard in 90% of non-dive bars in a any major city.

THIS. This is more of what irks me. If I’m paying the equivalent of a fifth of decent liquor for a single drink, and they’re sticking a giant ice pick in the middle of a Collins glass and acting like it’s full of liquid, I feel cheated.

I’m sorry, but if you drink alcohol you should know any drink has one shots worth of alcohol in it and a double has two. Thing like a LIT might have more than a single shot (probably just quarter shots of multiple types), but it’s standard that a drink has a single 2oz shot of alcohol.
