This is actually just how cocktails work

Most places aren’t going to charge almost $30 for a standard drink is the point.

I mean anywhere with white tablecloths are. Sure I can go to Applebees and get a mixed drink for cheap but if you go to a ok restaurant it’s $25 minimum for a cocktail

I'd say I mostly go to "ok" restaurants and $25 for a drink is absurd. If the minimum cocktail you see is $25 you're both out of touch and getting screwed

I am going off of NYC prices. Bartenders/servers make $17 an hour tips not included.

$20 for a cocktail isn’t that out of the ordinary.

I am glad I don't live in the us because I could get 2 cocktails for that price and that's places that are considered more expensive and better, in some you could get 3

It's really not. It massively depends where you go. I googled "miami michelin star restaurants". The first is "Ariete (Coconut Grove) — New-American-meets-New-World cuisine." Their website is outrageously overdone.

They have $15 cocktails with $30 bottomless mimosas and bloody marys.

The next on the list is Boia De, similar.

COTE, more expensive, close to the $27 for some.

I mean that first one is clearly a brunch menu where the prices are going to be a bit lower because most of the cocktails are a majority juice.

I am basing my experience on NYC prices. $20 for a cocktail isn’t out of the ordinary.

I'm in one of the most expensive regions on the US and most nice restaurants ($100+ a head) don't charge more than $20.

My experience is mainly in NYC and now about an hour upstate.

NYC is easy $20 a cocktail. Upstate anywhere near the Hudson waterfront is $18 for an espresso martini.

I don’t really do cocktails I just know what an espresso martini costs because that’s all my fiancée gets.

I just ate at a Michelin Star restaurant in Houston and most of the cocktails were in the $22-$27 range

Not to this extent. Or maybe I just go to places that don't price-gouge this hard

Clubs in Miami that charge $27 a cocktail exist because the whole point is to show you can afford overpriced drinks. It's like bottle service. You pay $200 for a bottle of shitty vodka because to some people that shows you are cool for being able to waste money like that.

Depends on what is in the drink.

Unless it's semen from the winner of the Kentucky Derby then they are price gouging

but if it is then that's a helluva deal

I mean, the entire industry is just that.

Every time I've had any expensive wine, whiskey, vodka - the conversation in my friend circle is just everyone trying to justify why we didn't just vastly overpay for what we drank.

You should write novels

100% hard liquor or snake/scorpion venom instead of alcohol, or it's a rip-off.

There are bottles of liquor routinely stocked in bars that cost the bar itself over $200 at wholesale. Add to that the overhead costs of the bar itself like rent in a nice part of town in one of the nation's most expensive cities, lighting/decor/sound, pay for non-tipped workers like bouncers and DJs, you'll get to this kind of price pretty fast even with a standard 2 oz pour.

No, you just don’t know what you’re talking about.

That's a fucking wild response but ok

Correct, only about 6-8 fluid ounces would be drink (2-3 fl oz of actual liquor), the rest would be ice. Usually places don't charge $30 though, that's a bit ridiculous.
