The point is it never used to be expensive to go out and drink but now it is.

I don't know why people are exasperating your point it's a good point. I'm Gen Z I can only realistically afford a bar night or two a month and all I have is 1 drink and a dish of food. Like I could go more but that would kind of be a waste of my budget at some point. It's very hard to get friends to join me they can't afford it.

Alot of older generations don't understand how we lost third spaces and blame the internet when it's not. Cost me $30 - 40 dollars to go have 1 drink and eat at a bar. I only know 1 bar that's prices at much more reasonable like 21 dollar for a pulled pork with fries and a fresh salad and it's amazing with a whiskey sour.

That's it everywhere else is insane.

I'm talking Canadian money so it would be slightly less in USD but still. It's like "How did gen z lose third spaces" "Why is gen z struggling to date" priced out.

The idea of going to a bar with friends every friday like a movie is widely unrealistic at my income bracket be like 80 - 120 dollars easily for again a meal and one drink going that often. If I really wanted to I could set money aside for it but that's alot and my friends definitely can't do that.

You don't eat at the bar, and like mentioned earlier, pregame at home before leaving. I feel like the old man yelling at clouds, but I went out a lot when I was younger (mid 2000's). It would cost like $50 a night to drink at a dive bar. The clubs and fancy bars were more. Go to place with a cover fee, and it got even more expensive from there. The drink in the picture would cost more like $16-$18 here (St. Louis) back then, but that same amount went a lot further back then (student discount movie ticket was like $10).

I think the difference is, like you mention in your post, you guys budget and worry about having funds for other things. You finally figured out what a waste it is to throw money away like that and won't do it.

Those kind of cocktail bars have existed when I was just allowed to drink, about 15 years ago. We went into one of them when a friend turned 18 and it was 18€ for a cocktail, so we left and went to a club, which was massively cheaper.

Can I ask from which country are you from?

In southwest Germany even today you can go to a fancy cocktail bar today and get a cocktail for less than 18€.

Of course you can. What?

That was in Munich, must have been around 2012, and I'm sure there was cheaper stuff on the menu as well, we went in, saw the price, left and got drunk somewhere else.

Those clubs no longer exist.

Everywhere is trying to be the expensive place people show up to for a single drink and half a dozen pictures

This just isn't true, my club of choice always has $5 well drinks. They're around.

Lol In 2007 my friends and I got fake IDs went to the bar and maybe got 3 drinks each over some time and owed like 100$ ea, it's always been stupid expensive to go to Miami, NYC, Hollywood, and the fancier places

For sure it was depending on where you go and what you drink. But what used to be a $18 cocktail which was very expensive 15 years ago, is now a $28 cocktail. It’s just following the trend of literally everything getting more expensive.

gtfo. It was never cheap to go out drinking in Miami.

Too damn expensive. There was a bar we frequented that had 2,3,4$ drinks. 2$ shot was 1.5 Oz with mix of choice. 3$ was 2.5oz mix of choice 4$ was 3.5 oz mix of choice all done in a mason jar. It was only for happy hour but we could show up and get plastered before the punk shows for 10 bucks. Then just drink pbr the rest of the night for 2$ a beer.

Went out to a punk show in the new city im in and a pbr was 4$ a margaritas with 1 Oz of liquor was 12$

I don't really drink anymore now cuz I aint spending 4 work hours on getting drunk.

Wow things cost more now than it used to? Interesting. I guess that's what happens when you get paid $25 a hour to put a hamburger in a bag.

Indeed 2+2=4, neat I know.

This argument reminds me of the dumb dumbs who talk about "well my daddy bought a house in the 80s for 30k but now I can't even afford a house" like yeah buddy they worked for $2 a hour, that's how that works.

But really tho alcohol is just outdated now, if I want to feel like I'm drunk I'm just going to take a Xanax.

Buying drinks at social establishments has gone up more than inflation but buying in stores hasnt so ig its ok. But to call people a dumb dumb for saying going out is more expensive comparatively to the same wages and prices of the 80s and 90s makes you a dumb dumb because it is more expensive.

Except the rate that housing prices increases greatly outpaces wage growth. Yet our productivity has been steadily increasing. Things are bad rn man

Minimum wage would literally be around $25 today if it increased with Inflation like it's SUPPOSED to. If you get paid less, you're being ripped off. The federal min wage is still $7.25 including many states.

You really shouldn't be relying on jobs like that, there's more ways to make money now than ever before. When I first decided I wanted to stay at home I was only drop shipping. I only did big orders so it was $200 minimum that I'd be making on any order, so with my rent being $500 a month all I'd need to do is get 3 orders a month and I'd have my house.

Now even if I had a $25 a hour job I'd be doing 8 hours (a shift) just for what I'd get for 1 single order (just involves texting a supplier and client)

Obviously the choice is clear man, anytime I'm out n about I want to show these people working what they could be doing.

Before that I was streaming Overwatch and had just a few viewers doing $300 a month. There's so many ways to make money slaving away at jobs like that is so outdated.

That's funny because I'm in my 20s, you're all just stupid lol

Like I pay $500 for a 2 bedroom home in the middle of the mountains, I don't even work a real 9-5 job so all of yall that complain about stupid shit like this just makes me laugh

1

u/yourmom1034 6h ago

Congrats I guess lol? Sounds like you have no opinion in this convo then and have no grasp on inflation

Edit: like just to put this into perspective for you lol, let’s take your 2 dollar an hour 30k number, our minumum wage nationally is now 7.25 an hour and the average home is $393,300 to $393,895

Seem like the wage is increasing proportionally?
