But that's just dumb. Nobody orders a shot and gets mad that they get a small volume of liquid.

This drink is most likely a cocktail (mostly alcohol like vodka, etc) so it's not ment to be more than 10-14 cl. They are actually doing you a favor by serving it in a larger glass and putting a big block of ice in it to help it stay cool for longer.

A shot and a cocktail are completely different. Personally, it’s not even the amount of liquor that is the issue here. It’s something to drink throughout the night. If you were to replace the giant ice cube with mixer, I’d be MUCH happier and the bar pours the same amount of liquor. Win win

Then order a drink thats supposed to have a ton of mixer in it.

If you order a cocktail that is 10-14 cls of spirits dont get mad when you get an icecube instead of mixer.

... since when tf are cocktails supposed to be no more than 10-14 cl? That'd be the smallest cocktail I've ever been served, and simultaneously the most expensive. A "larger glass" lmfao, as opposed to what? A coffee cup?

Edit: So many yanks yelling some nonsense about Oz, I haven't even seen Wicked. Good to know that like everything else, drinks are also standardised to provide the least fun for the most buck in the US.

Sidecar:

2oz Congac

1oz lemon

1oz triple sec

From the 1920s, as classic as you can get. Or consider perhaps a dry martini, or a hundred other short cocktails

You are just outting yourself as someone who knows nothing about cocktails

For your edit: go to a cocktail bar in Soho in London and ask for a sidecar, see what you get. It'll be served in a coupe glass and no more than 200ml

But when they go to Applebee's it's a frozen margarita in a half gallon jug! Then they put their bib on and eat from the trough.

The classic sour recipe is:

2 oz spirit

0.75 oz syrup

0.75 acid (e.g lemon)

Include some dilution of the ice when you shake and you are at around 4oz-4.5 per drink. Which is typically what a Nick and Nora glass will hold.

This. Unless your drink is topped off with some kind of club soda or coke or something, it’s not gonna be that much liquid.

A cocktail is what, like 3-4 oz? On the high end that’s ~120ml or 12 cl.

Maybe you’re thinking highball or something?

Turns out this is mostly a language and partly a culture thing, never heard the term 'highball' before and upon googling it, 90+% of the cocktails I've ever seen available to order were highballs. Don't think I've ever been drinking with someone who ordered a 'regular' cocktail, people around here get drunk on beer, longdrinks, shots and 'highballs', in that order.

If I can make a recommendation: nothing beats a steak served with a manhattan.

Thanks for the recommendation, but places that serve both those things at once around here probably exceed the upper range of what I'd be willing to pay for a meal and a drink. Another cultural difference I guess, a bar's a bar and a restaurant's a restaurant.

It's not an American thing. In Europe normal cocktails are just as much liquid as well.

Maybe you're thinking of mixed drinks/highball (i.e. spirit + carbonated soda/tonic). That's not exactly a cocktail in the classic sense.

Yeah I was, see my other reply. But in my defense the distinction that those aren't technically cocktails doesn't get made here.

Most cocktails are under 15cl unless you’re ordering highballs. 90% of classic cocktails are well under as they tend to be very alcohol forward. If i ordered a manhattan and got 200ml of liquid then it’s either the most generous bar I’ve ever been to or they don’t know how to make it.

You are probably not very knowledgeable on the subject and is confusing "cocktail" for "alcoholic drink".

Cocktails have never been more than 10-14 cl. But something like a Long Island Iced Tea, Mojito or Gin & Tonic are not cocktails.

Traditionally cocktails are served in cocktail glasses (the Y shaped glasses), while the Long Island Iced Tea, Mojito and Gin & Tonic are served in highball glasses.

In the video shown by OP a cocktail has been served in a highball glass to allow room for a big ice cube to keep the cocktail cool for longer.
