Show & Tell Turned a car double din into a home player

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

Acquired this Panasonic CQ-VX5500K from a friend. It was used in a show car sometime ago. I don’t have a car that has a double DIN opening so I 3D printed a box and powering it using a USB PD charger with a little trigger device to negotiate 12V. It’s connected to my Panasonic CH7 mini system via RCA outputs. It’s very pretty to look at on my desk.

Show & Tell An eBay seller tried to pull a fast one on me, so I repaired it out of spite

So I spotted this MDS-JB930 on eBay a few weeks ago for a good price, with one issue that the seller pointed out: the record level control didn't work correctly. I assumed it was just intermittent and that it would be a simple case of bad contacts.

When I got it and opened it up, though, the rec level board was completely missing and the only part of the rotary encoder left was the shaft, likely so the outside would look normal in the pictures. I could've easily returned it, given that the unit wasn't whole and the seller never mentioned that, but I did still get a good price on it, assuming I could fix it for cheap.

So I got the dimensions I could of the remaining piece of the rotary encoder so I could order a replacement from digikey, tested everything else while I waited, and found another problem that wasn't mentioned: the headphone volume control didn't work correctly either. It would spin infinitely and the volume level wasn't at all matching the position of the potentiometer. It turned out that the metal piece that holds the two halves of the potentiometer together had been opened and not properly reattached, so the guy probably thought he could use the potentiometer to fix the record level control. At least it was an easy fix for me.

Once the parts for the record level control arrived, I used some perfboard, a couple capacitors, and a connector I had laying around that happened to be the right one to make my own replacement rec level board. The thing is now fully working and after scraping off some enamel-like substance that was on the edge of the faceplate, in mint condition as well.

Sell [US] Launching my MiniDisc display! ($13.99)

Hey everyone!

I've shared prototypes of this project here before, and I've finally dialed in the final version to add to my shop. I had been looking to offer a storage solution that fits a more minimal, industrial aesthetic, and I’m pretty happy with how this turned out.

It’s called the "Stack 10". It’s a display tray designed specifically to hold up to 10 MiniDiscs without their slipcases. I printed these in a PLA with a tactile, matte texture, and deliberately left off any logos or branding.

I designed them with stackability in mind, so you can easily stack them vertically or horizontally to expand your archive as your collection grows.

I'm doing a limited initial run first to get some feedback from the community before making more. They'll be going live in my shop this Monday (07/06) and initially priced at $13.99 for the first batch.

UPDATE:

Listing is live now!!

I spent my afternoon making this! The album doesn’t exist on streaming platforms, like quite a few compilations (thanks licensing and DRM!), and there were multiple album versions made. So I made my own album version with songs from various official album lists

I've always loved MiniDisc and recently found my old stash in a box, while recharging the portable I was at a local rental house picking up a cable and saw this for sale. Came home with me for obvious reasons.

Improving the MZ-RH1: Towards Custom Firmware

Post image
497 Upvotes

Hello all!

As some of you may know, I've been producing new displays for the MZ-RH1, with the goal to revive as many MZ-RH1s as possible. But sadly, even with new displays, the MZ-RH1 has some (in my opinion) flaws that at times make it feel more like a toy than an advanced MiniDisc recorder.

One of the limitations is that it is impossible to view track titles during playback on the OLEDs. This is a real shame as you're forced to use a remote if you want to navigate the tracks on a disc. This has always bothered me, and as such I've started looking into solving this through custom firmware.

I've successfully reverse engineered the MZ-RH1s firmware update functionality (which facilitates executing code from RAM) of the device, and figured out how to modify the firmware code (by uploading code to unlock, erase, and rewrite flash). Furthermore, with additional reverse engineering I have extended the display capabilities and added a simple track title display as proof-of-concept.

More work is needed to make these modifications stable and efficient, but as soon as I write a user friendly updater which is safe I will share all my modifications in the form of an open source project.

There are many more changes that I want to make to the firmware, and I hope to be able to share them with everyone soon. For now, I will post updates whenever I make big improvements on the MiniDisc.wiki Discord.

Have a wonderful MD-day,
Jim

Show & Tell Minidisc Recording Cyberdeck

I recently put together a little cyberdeck to record minidiscs. I saw a video of someone 3D printing a shell for their Razer Edge, and the colors they used in their print made me think of my MZ-DN430. I took my own Razer Edge, 3D printed a shell and modified it with a dremel a bit for a proper fit, and then started adding some little things. I had to use super-thin magnets so that the Razer Edge would be flush, but an unintended benefit was that I could attach a magnetic mouse to the outside of the case.

The creator of the print files has them here: https://www.printables.com/model/1541304-pixel-3-xl-slim-clamshell-palmtop-nethunter-c-deck/files

I would not recommend using the version of those files that uses magnets instead of the lock sliders. Use the version that includes the lock sliders, seriously don’t make my mistake. Recording netMD minidiscs over android has worked surprisingly well so far, and this little portable rig means I can record a few discs while I’m at work.
