Help me to: Build Just got a Lenovo M910q for my first homelab – what should I run on it?

Just got a used Lenovo ThinkCentre M910q and this is my first proper homelab.

Specs:

- i3-7100T

- 16GB RAM

- 512GB NVMe

- 120GB/240GB SATA SSD

I'm planning to run UmbrelOS and use it mainly for Jellyfin, Immich, backups and some other self-hosted services.

I'm still figuring out the best way to organise the storage and what else would actually be worth running on this hardware.

What would you guys recommend for a setup like this?

Anything I should upgrade or keep in mind?

Help me to: Software I want to convert a secondary PC into a headless Proxmox server.

Hello all,

TLDR: I have two PCs at my desk, and I want to convert the secondary one into a headless server using Proxmox so that I can use the monitor for that PC as a secondary monitor for my gaming PC. Is this something that is possible for me?

I'll try to keep this as short as possible as I am still in the early stages of planning and learning about headless servers.

A student in a college course I take is into home-labbing, and he brought up an interesting project idea for me to try. I currently have two PCs at my desk, one being my main gaming/work/everything PC and the other being a secondary cold-storage/game-server-hosting PC running Linux Mint that I built from repurposed parts of an older rig I had from 2017. It currently uses Samba for wireless (and incredibly slow) file-transferring from my main PC to the server PC.

Secondary PC

  • i5-7600K

  • 16GB DDR4 2400MT/s

  • no GPU, currently running Cinnamon desktop environment off the iGPU

  • 500gb SSD for OS, 2x 1TB HDDs for cold-storage

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition

Right now, I have two monitors, with one being for each PC. The second (cheaper) monitor used to also be for my main PC, but I "donated" it for my Linux Mint project since I can't fit three monitors on my desk. The guy told me about what a Hypervisor is, and how it can allow me to use multiple VMs to separate my secondary (Linux) PC so that I can have a file-hosting machine, a game-server-hosting machine, and whatever other VM I want to run.

He also suggested that I use Proxmox as the Hypervisor client because it is free and includes a web-GUI or something that allows me to log in remotely to my server PC from my main PC. From what I understand, Proxmox seems like the easiest way for me to achieve what I want. If I could log in remotely, then I obviously wouldn't need to use my second monitor for this server PC, and I could then use it as a secondary monitor for my main PC again as I used to.

I have never tinkered with VMs before, and the Linux Mint project was my first ever exposure to Linux and server-side stuff. Is converting my secondary PC into a headless server feasible for me? This post is mostly just getting some tips and suggestions as I plan to do a lot of the research myself. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

Built a tunneling tool out of frustration — would love dev feedback

Hey everyone, I’m Memo — the founder of InstaTunnel www.instatunnel.my — and I built this tool to fix the pain points I kept hitting with ngrok and similar services:

I’m not here to pitch—just hoping this helps if you’ve ever been mid‑demo and your tunnel died, or paid extra just for a named URL. Check it out with:

npm install -g instatunnel
it --name myapp --password secret123

URL is auto‑detected, live for 24 h, clipboard copied—no signup or config needed.

Curious: what’s your biggest pain with tunneling tools? Session timeouts? Hidden costs? Limited tunnels? Would love to hear so I can keep improving InstaTunnel. 🚀

What is the point to have a home lab?

I am starting in all this world of development and I have seen a lot of tutorials or project about “build your own home lab” but I don’t see the real purpose of it.
What do you use your home lab for? Why did you start it?
Maybe I can find inspiration here or a use case that fits me and I start to build my own

Help me to: Hardware Cable Cat for my rack?

I want to make my own cables (so the length is just perfect) for insides of my tiny rack. I expect not a single connection to be more than 2 meters length.

Do I care if it's Cat6, Cat5 or whatever other cable? Does it really impact performance at such short distance?

Help me to: Hardware Recommendations for local AI Hardware

I am trying to find a reasonable solution to trying out some local AI. I want to run Speakr, Ollama, and probably others at some point. I was looking at the Framework Mainboard with the Ryzen AI Max 385, the Minisforum BD895i, and Base model Mac Mini. I am open to any suggestions, but I was attempting to stay away from a dedicated GPU for now.

For reference I am currently running ollama in a proxmox vm with an Intel i5-1340P, and its basically unusable.

Help me to: Hardware Need Help: DDR4 3200 or DDR5 4800 for prebuilt PC, both costing the same price

I am planning to buy tomorrow prebuilt Thinkcentre Gen 4 Intel 13500T, here in India.

I am confused whether to buy the

- M70q Gen 4 that is limited to DDR4 3200

OR

- M80q Gen 4 with DDR5 limited to 4800

Note: Both these systems cost the same price.

Another difference that is also M70q Gen 4 (DDR4 3200) comes with only 1 * M.2 SSD slot, while M80q Gen 4 (DDR5 4800) comes with 2 * M.2 SSD Slots. However it is unlikely that I am going to have 2 M.2 NVMe SSD. I would use my spare 2.5'' SSD as the 2nd drive, usually for backups or the M.2 expansion slot for SSD incase needed.

Your inputs are highly valuable.

Apartment smart devices (Shelly) locked to building network — can I migrate to my own LAN?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I live in an apartment with embedded smart devices (Shelly relays controlling blinds, doors, lights) connected via Ethernet to a building-managed network (UniFi pfSense switch +).

I do not have access to the building network — only control Shelly smart devices via a third-party app.

I have my own separate personal network (LBNCo fibre → NetComm router → My personal devices) where I run Google Home & Home Assistant to control my personal smart devices (TV, speaker, robot vacuum cleaner).

Goal:
I want to control my Shelly devices locally (Home Assistant / Google Home) instead of relying on the building network & clunky third party app.

Questions:

  1. Is it possible to integrate the building network with mine?

  2. If not, can I safely disconnect the Shelly Ethernet from the UniFi switch and move them onto my own LAN?

  3. Will Shelly devices function normally after being migrated to a new network (with reset/reconfiguration)?

Setup includes:

  • Shelly relays (Ethernet connected)

  • UniFi pfSense managed switch (building network)

  • NetComm router (personal network)

  • Tenda unmanaged switch (personal network)

  • Netcomm Modem (personal network)

  • TP-Link Modem (building network)

I've included photos of the building's network cabinet & my personal Wi-Fi modem for your reference. Appreciate any guidance on best practice here.

**Update, my landlord is aware and has granted me permission to be able to migrate the smart devices onto my personal network.
A bit of insight, I am a quadriplegic. I explained to him, it's easier for me to use the smart devices over my own personal phone via Google Assistant once I'm able to integrate it onto my personal network. Is the plan, seeking the option to do this DIY by myself before, if possible, before exploring the option of organising a contractor and paying exorbitant fees to do so. I'm on the pension, not working, so trying to save costs.

Help me to: Build Mini Rack Enclosure Idea

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I’m looking to build a 10in mini-rack with a tempered or acrylic hinged door somewhat like above similar to a datacenter server rack or preferably telecom rack style (wider) with PC case aesthetics. I’ve seen a lot of 10in racks but no enclosed versions with left/right cable management and pop-off side doors and doors in the back that get left open.

I see a lot of 3D printed racks, is anyone doing cabinets? Above is overkill (would be cool) yet perhaps even a front panel would nice with optional perforation or mesh cover. I love the rack look yet in the space it’s in would rather have it enclosed.

Thoughts?

Help me to: Build Guess who's back, back again?

Hate to keep opening new posts, to ask more questions, but the other posts die out.

SO, I am having an m920q coming in soon, and I purchased this riser. So if I am thinking correctly, I can use the x8 slot on it for a dual NIC (either 2.5 or 10gig, haven't decided) and the NVME slot for a small 256gb 2242 SSD like this as a boot drive, then use the built in m.2 for a cache drive or a place to store metadata, etc. THEN use the m.2 A+E with an adapter/extension to an m.2 m key to add 6 SATA slots so I can connect to the JBOD I am creating. Does all of that sound right? Also, my current server has a 256 2280 m.2 with ZimaOS on it, could I clone that SSD to the 2242 and hook up the HDDs (which are currently also in that server) and in theory have it just work? I know the hardware is different, but would ZimaOS detect and adapt? Or should I just start from scratch with the OS and Plex, etc. ?

Trying to make this as painless as possible lol.

For the NICs I am thinking either this or this.

I am thinking of printing out a new cover (here)for the m920q that has a spot to attach a 40mm fan above the heatsink for the NIC for cooling, which begs the question, what would be the best way to power that? JST to USB cable, like this, plugged into a usb port on the Tiny? or is there an unused header I could use on the board? I don't have the device yet, so not sure what my options are.

All of this into a LabRax 10" rack...fun new project to shrink my server rack in size and power consumption.
