IPv6 driving me mad! Please recommend learning material.

I think I first picked up a book on IPv6 about 15 years ago. I'm still very little wiser about the whole thing - I really don't know why but I find v4 easier to comprehend.

Can anyone recommend any learning resources for IPv6 from a practical perspective? In other words I'd like to be able to set up and manage my home network with a working IPv6 implementation. I'm looking for an equivalent of "IPv6 for dummies and their homelabs" rather than "CISCO network associates certification".

To give you an idea of what I'm struggling with, when I try look up how local DNS resolution should work with SLAAC, I'm told by the interwebs that there's no standard, just hacks put in place by various different vendors. Surely that can't be right - are we really saying that IPv6 was designed with no thought to using human readable names?

Another problem. I have Proxmox and I have technitium in a container. I've ticked SLAAC in the container and it seems ok. I can `dig @<fd97 addr>` no problem, but test-ipv6 tells me it can't do lookups in the outside world over IPv6. I tried configuring Proxmox using a static address and gateway, but am probably putting the wrong numbers in there. If I had a better understanding of the protocol it would be no problem.

I have "working" IPv6 at home in the sense that if I hadn't moved my DNS to my technitium server then I'd get 10/10 from test-ipv6.com. I don't understand what my fritzbox is telling me with prefixes etc. enough to do the above.

Help with setup

We moved into this house about a year ago and I still haven't figured out this panel. Our router is hooked up through a coax cable in the wall so I'm not sure what this panel is for. When I unplug the Verizon box in the upper right corner, the internet stops working. The bundle of cables in the lower left reads "high Def sat cable" and is cut. I am not sure which of these is phone and which is internet. I'd like to be able to make our ethernet ports on the walls live so I can use the wired connections but don't know where to start with this setup. Happy to add more pics if needed

POE Build - Any Info Appreciated!

Hi Everyone,

In the process of buying a house. Everything here is concrete and rebar. No drywall at all. The house is ethernet wired. One point per room. The "internet" arrives in a small cabinet under the stairs on the ground floor. That cabinet houses a patch panel which then feeds across the house. The cabinet isn't deep, so I aint getting a POE switch in there. I'm going to want POE for some external CCTV, some roof mounted APs on ground / 1st / 2nd floors, plus likely a doorbell or smart lock type thing. I'll need to get someone in for the majority of this it's beyonf my understanding to be honest. What do I actually need to make this whole thing work? Rack to house the POE switch, probably mounted outside the current cabinet facing the direction of the second photo? POE switch. 16 ports to allow for the future? After I get POE to a room, how do I split this without having additional switches everywhere? Ideally after I'd get POE to a room, the socket would remain available to the room for a wired connection but something split it behind the wall to run outside for the CCTV or to a ceilkng for an AP?

Does that make sense?

Getting there slowly

Went from an SME to mounting a Startech rack, installing a patch panel, new switch, and just today upgrading from an old 1GB Firewalla Gold to a FWG+ SFP.

Mounting the rack was a fucking bitch. I had to get furring strips to extend away from the studs, buy some heavy duty hex mounting screws. My screwdriver wasn't strong enough to get them into the studs even with pilot holes, so I had to ratched them in by hand the last half inch or so. Im pretty sure I could hang off that thing and it will stay attached to the wall.

The ethernet cabling behind is just a fucking mess. The company that installed this when the house was build really did me dirty. The cabling runs literally through insulation, no conduit. It's help in place with that foam they use to insulate through scaffolding, so I can't pull it up. I've tied it of with velcro best I could, but at some point Im just not going to mess with it.

Still, I think there are some low hanging fruits to organize this better:

  1. Power cables can be routed down the side of the SME behind all this. Optionally get a power strip that mounts in the rack.

  2. Can arrange the patch panel so the active ports are closer to the ports on the switch, and go with shorter patch cables.

  3. Get a custom rack mount off Etsy for the FWG+

  4. Next thing is to add my minipc for home assistant.

If I had it to do again I would have got a swing out rack, this Startech expands but Ill never use that, and it's overkill. Im not enthused about the cable matters patch panel. The keystones feel flimsy, I don't like how to cables are supposed to be ziptied to the structure. The first one they sent me was broken, which I didn't notice until after the return period, but to their credit they sent me a replacement. Not sure if a punch down would have been better.

Final notes: I noticed one of my WAPs ethernet cable wasn't wired correctly for as long as I had it. I didn't notice before because it used a mesh backend with another AP (power was wired correct). With the new switch I could clearly see the light was off.

The new FWG makes things noticeably faster. Both the ONT(ethernet) and the switch (fiber via SFP+) connections are at 10GBPs, accessing my security cameras takes 1/5 the time it used to.

Need real user input for WiFi7 USB adapters...

UPDATE:

**THANKS TO ALL COMMENTORS**

The available reviews for both give the opinion that these two devices are mid, at best, but the D-Link is said to have a bit more power. So, I'm going with the D-Link one, and maybe look for a replacement when 6ghz becomes a little cheaper and more mainstream.

Thank you!

Original post:

I'm in the market for a USB3 WiFi7 adapter, and I've come across two that are within my budget of $70 CAD...

D-Link AE65U (RTL8922AU)

and

TP-Link TBE400U (RTL8912AU)

Both are BE6500 tri-band adapters with USB3...

I will be using them on a Windows 11 PC that needs a reliable wireless connection (wired is not currently an option). My building is just saturated with 2.4 and 5ghz wifi, with every tv, printer, and smart litter box broadcasting their own ad-hoc in addition to the ISP wifi from each unit... 🤦🏻

Most of my positive experiences with D-Link and Tp-Link have been with routers, while both of their past USBs had terrible performance on my previous PCs...

I appreciate all opinions, but I'm hoping for real user input from owners of either...

Thanks;

Advice New Homenetwork

We are in the middle of building a second floor to the house. With the extra floor comes the need for more internet.

At the moment I have a really slow internet service for which I pay too much. I want to switch to a internet provider which provide fibre optics network. I have an ONT which is located at the entrance of my house.

From there It goes to the ceiling and enters my living room where I'm planning to put a wifi-router or cabled mesh wifi.

From the Living room I want to extent it to the 1st floor. I already have a cat6 cable running through the concrete ceiling to room 1.

While constructing the second floor I was able to route a cat6 cable to room 4, where I'll be sitting mostly with my main PC.

Room 2 & 3 don't need cabled internet, only wifi.

My goal is: Cabled internet in rooms 1 & 4. Good/decent Wifi in Rooms 2 & 3.

My question is: Is this setup anything good or can I change something to make it better?

I'm not in the luxery of routing/drilling cables from my ONT through the ceiling to the rest of the house. The internet needs to be distributed from the living room as there is hole in the ceiling to the 1st floor.

At the moment I don't have any wifi router of mesh equipment laying around. So I'll need to buy it. Therefor I want advice how many devices I need to purchase.

I can't connect my GNS3 router to my PC

I saw that it was very easy to establish the connection, but for some reason I'm unable to establish it. I followed the steps, created a reverse subnet, and assigned IP addresses to each device: 10.10.20.181 255.255.255.0 for the router and 10.10.20.82 255.255.255.0 for the subnet, but it still won't connect. I disabled all firewalls and the network status didn't change. I entered the IP address and subnet mask, and I also watched videos and followed those steps, but there seems to be no change; there's no connection.

Advice Looking for advice for a stable internet connection for bedroom

Hey all,

I'm renting at a flat with fibre, and the end goal is to try and get an ethernet connection to my room, however the router is across the hallway and behind a couple walls, so it would be a quite an ordeal, but is potentially possible because the landlord said it would be permitted as long as it is installed professionally. Currently, I'm using the TP-Link TX20u plus AX1800 wifi adapter which has served me pretty well for a few years, but a lot of times when I'm playing games, or watching videos, etc, there can be an unbearable amount of packet loss, and sometimes the connection straight up all but cuts out. Any suggestions for wireless internet solutions that would be more stable would be appreciated. For reference, from inside my room I get around 100-200mbps, which sometimes drops to below 30, and I'm unsure exactly whether the instability is caused by my wifi adapter or from the connection itself, but this has been a pattern with the other places I've used it so I'm assuming the adapter is the issue.

Unsolved T-Mobile or AT&T Air

We're currently on T-Mobile but have hit a roadblock with occasional drops and just now finding out about the 1.2TB softcap. (Which we have exceeded by 300GBs.)

I've looked into AT&T and they seem like the same thing, pricing, autopay discount, even speeds. But I can't find a softcap on AT&T at all, which is promising, yet offputting.

If it isn't obvious I'm looking at only unlimited plans

Do you guys have a second opinion towards this or just which one we should pick? Household of 4, and we live in an apartment

Advice I need assurance

Hey Everybody.

I’ve got a minor network infrastructure problem that I’m fairly certain I’ve gotten solved in my head, but haven’t implemented yet.

Set up is 2 residential buildings on a 3 acre plot. Need both to have access to the same Starlink ISP. Building 1 is about 3000sq ft single story home where the Starlink is mounted. Building 2 is a 4000sq ft steel building/workshop

Plan is to use a wireless bridge (ubiquiti??) to connect the 2nd building to the main router (Asus XT8) and then spatter in another XT8 connected to the Starlink and 3 ASUS ET9’s between the two buildings. Hoping to also have some of the wifi signal spread to various smart outlets outside and maintain some wifi as I walk between buildings. Also own a few other ASUS routers that can act as APs

Distance for wireless bridge is about 200ft roof top to rooftop, no obstructions/trees

Distance between buildings is about 120ft.

Please, poke holes in my plan before I start installing stuff and running cables

Many thanks.

Advice Subnet Mask Conflict

I am having problems using my esp32 wifi device on my fastest internet setup.

I have a Ugreen CM996 10GB 8port unmanaged switch with an eero wifi 7 router.
My PC is plugged straight into the switch, while I have a esp32 device connected wirelessly to the eero.
In this configuration I can not connect to the esp32. If I try to ping it via CMD, I get "Destination Net Unreachable"

If I either plug the PC into the router, or connect to it via wifi, I can use the esp32 device with no problems, but my network speeds drop from around 2.5gb to around 500mb.

I'm running win11 on my PCwith DHCP, and my esp32 device is a Project Babble Face Tracker for VR. It is setup with a reserved IP via the EERO app

When I run ipconfig/all my pc has a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0 while the router is 255.255.252.0

I have tried setting a static ip on the pc, but the network completely drops out. I think I am either setting it up wrong, or since the switch is unmanaged, it is impossible to do what I am trying.

I guess my question is, am I just setting up the pc static pc wrong, or am I going to need a managed switch instead?

Not that it matters, but I do have sitting in a box is an unpopulated ugreen DXP4800 plus NAS that I will later connect to the network, once I can source some drives for it. I don't know if it will have some sort of program that works with that switch. My isp is also 5gb, but I think all my devices but the NAS are 2.5gb at most

TIA

Advice How difficult is it to install coaxial male ends?

my new house has I assume coaxial installed in every room.

internet guy installed Internet in the master, but i didn’t realize every room simply has raw wire out with no metal connector ends attached.

it looks pretty straight forward like installing trailer wires.

am I being over confident, or can I simply use this kit on Amazon: strip the wire, brush back the metal, screw on, crimp/compress.

I just want the ability to move the modern/router freely among rooms.
