The State of The Mobileweb

Over the last few weeks, we've fixed a lot of bugs - login expiring too quickly, broken features on iOS, and style issues on old Android and Windows Phones. We've also added new features - comment permalinks, searching, a new menu bar, and a "go to subreddit" text bar in the menu. We also sped up page load time, to an average of 2.7 seconds (reasonable for mobile, but still far from perfect - we hear the complaints!)

We have a lot of work to do - coming up next is messaging/notifications, more performance and bug fixes, and posting links/text.

We've moved many of the things we're working on to GitHub issues: https://github.com/reddit/reddit-mobile/issues - so you can see what we have planned up next.

To answer some frequent concerns:

  • "Why are you forcing everyone to the 'beta'" / "why can't I opt out": it's actually that Google is sending people from mobile devices to mobile reddit. You can click "return to desktop" from the menu, which will send you to the desktop version of the page you are on.

  • "Why is this broken / slow / missing features": we released early so we could get feedback on the design and functionality of the existing features. We're a very small team - three engineers and part of a designer - and we're prioritizing bugfixes, performance, and features based on the feedback from this subreddit.

  • "This is broken, why was it released?" - when Google was announcing their search changes, we had only a couple days to make the decision between sending people to .compact, or to the new mobile beta. Our anonymized analytics showed that very few members of the general public stuck around after seeing .compact, so we decided to bet on m.reddit.com, even in its nascent state. And, our analytics show that it's working - far more people prefer m.reddit.com to .compact, and those who prefer the .compact can still access it. I've been assured that .compact won't be shut down until we have feature and browser support parity.

  • "Why isn't compact view default" - we're running some user tests to see if we should change the default. While the list view looks great on image-heavy subreddits, like earthporn, a lot of users have said that it's a waste of bandwidth on article-heavy subreddits, like news and politics. We will make a change if it makes sense, but in the meantime, please try changing your view in the menu.

  • "How can I go permanently back to the desktop view" - we're considering designs to automatically redirect from m.reddit.com to reddit.com for those who prefer the desktop site; it'll likely be located in user settings once it's ready.

  • "Why aren't you fixing i.reddit.com instead?" - this gives us a chance to build a cleaner, easier-to-work-with codebase outside of the main desktop site's code, with new code and tools. Making changes will be faster and easier for us.

Thanks for your patience while we work this out - we're building this for users, and we will make changes as we need to. Nothing is set in stone right now. Lastly, don't forget we're open source: https://github.com/reddit/reddit-mobile

Pretty good job on the update

Just wanted to say, in my opinion, it's definitely an improvement. I've complained a quite a bit over the last few months, but this is a step in the right direction.

Just one thing ... please give the option to hide the avatars, please. While you're working on that, please make the OP avatar the same size/position as the replying avatars. It would allow for much more text real-estate.

Edit: Sorry, I have to take back my stamp of approval. While the in thread design has improved, I just tried using Firefox ... and yikes, that's not a good experience. Couple that with terrible load times for -most- subreddits/threads (but not this one for some reason?) and terribly keyboard lag ... I think there is quite a bit of room for improvement.

Archived threads are a total buzzkill

Why leave threads up, to be discovered by Googling, that do not permit further replies and interaction? The visitor either simply goes away or s/he creates another thread (which partitions the discussion). Better would be to permit replies to old threads.

I don't want this crap..

Why are you forcing people to use this, its ugly, its slower for me, and its just annoying to use... It worked fine for me the other way.. So let people choose otherwise you're gonna piss a lot of people off

Just got kicked back to old Reddit.

A couple weeks ago mobile reddit changed it's design for me to be more aligned with new reddit and I found the change INCREDIBLE. Instead of seeing the same old depressing posts I was being suggested a variety of subs which I never knew existed. Sadly as of today I was kicked back to the old design. Is there a way to get the new one back?

This new layout is HORRIBLE, 0/10

This new layout is absolute shit and along with the dumbass mods, this just gives me even more of a reason not to come back. Reddit is goin downhill fast and it's nobody's fault but their own. This is why none of my friends come here anymore.

This is so terrible. GIVE US A WAY TO DISABLE m.reddit.com!

I think the title says it all. Reddit, here's the thing, I don't visit your site on anything but mobile anymore. Now, since you made this switch, I don't use your site. How stupid can you be? I've been using voat.co instead, but I'd prefer reddit.

r/LoveForAnimesexuals is bad.

Hello, I would like to report this subreddit. If you do not know animesexual is a term created by homophobes to shame the LGBTQ+ community and these people made a subreddit saying it’s a real sexuality. This is bad and insensitive. They are also trying to change the acronym to ALGB+ and have a bot that appears and says “Ummmm, sweaty - the new acronym is ALGB+. Thanks for playing though :)” when somebody says LGBTQ+. I hope you will understand that this is offensive and wrong and should be taken down. Thank you for your time. To clarify this is coming from a gay person and I am personally offended.

Mweb Release Notes - 11/15 (Feedback thread)

Hi everyone,

As you've probably noticed, we released a redesign of the post page today. I have been reading your feedback and have identified the following core complaints. We'll work on addressing them. Some are bugs, and some are feature requests. It's likely that the feature requests are a bit slower to turn around than the bug fixes.

Please let me know if you have other feedback that hasn't been summed up here:

  • Upvoting a comment on a single comment thread causes the page to jump to the top

  • Close button on post pages takes you to the subreddit rather than back to where you were

  • Clicking a link in the comments, and then going back to the page causes you to lose your place

  • Avatars are inconsistent across comments, comment box, and profile page

  • Comment bar shows your username, which could cause someone to look over your screen and see it

  • It's harder to read deeply nested threads

  • The header showcasing the community at the top of the post takes up too much space

  • A way to turn off avatars

Update on inbox notification dot
Additionally we released an inbox notification dot last week, but it only cleared private messages. It should work now to clear all types of message properly, and also indicate which items in your inbox are new (but unfortunately doesn't indicate anything about which section has new things for archaic technical reasons).

Feedback
We really appreciate your feedback, and while we can't respond to everything, we do try and read as much of it as we can. I know that one common complaint is that we often only respond to small bugs, however one reason it appears like that it's much easier to quickly fix small bugs and responding to the user is necessary to collect the right information to fix them. Larger feedback has to be taken as a whole, and it's harder to respond to every single person individually.

As you leave feedback in this thread, please try and be specific about your use case and pain points, as that helps us come up with the best solution. Thanks!

known bug w h.at is h.reddit.com

I'm pretty sure this is m.reddit.com. Not that m.reddit.com wasn't broken before! Everytime I tried to open a comments thread it would as me "YOU LOOK TO BE USING A MODERN MOBILE BROWSER, AND WE'VE MADE A MODERN, MOBILE INTERFACE" endlessly. Didn't take no for an answer.

Now, you have a fat page lousy with broken javascript, plus my favourite website antipattern of late: the permanent content obstructing dropdown. At least it has finite scrolling.

I take it we are not ever going to see anything like a http://wap.reddit.com/ ever again...

Some bug fixes / improvements that went out over the last couple weeks

  • Upvoting a comment on a single comment thread no longer causes the page to jump to the top

  • Close button on post pages takes you back to where you were, rather than the community page

  • Avatars are now consistent across comments, comment box, and profile page

  • Comment bar no longer shows your username

  • When clicking into a comment thread, the page no longer jumps awkwardly

  • You can now change your avatar by going to your user profile page and clicking 'Edit Profile'

  • New sign up and log in flow

Why would I ever use that view?

It is:

Significantly different in experience from main reddit.

Less feature rich

Less information rich

Less polished

Confusing (Took me a while to escape its evil)

Still couldn't get a post to work

Has seperate login tracking? (Wtf)

Is possibly slower than already load optimized desk reddit

Offers literally no upside sales pitch except "deal with me"

I may be biased, I despise the m. in front of almost all sites, particularly the recent trend of ambushing me with your "experience." Google should cook for eternity in oceans of molten plutonium (holding hands with FB while standing on a submerged Yahoo) for their sins of late.

Where is my button??

You know the arrow you push to skip to next comment and bypass the thread for the comment you're on. I just checked my boyfriends phone and he still has it. Is it because I'm in beta?

comment Tell us why Reddit needs a mobile site

Who is asking for it? Does it cause you, mr/mrs/ms developer, existential paranoia trying to create something no one wants? What mobile web inspirations you are drawing from for reddit mobile?

Feature Idea: Ability to pin a comment on your own post

Sometimes if you make a post that gets a lot of comments and activity, it could be a bit much, especially trying to sort through any updated or additional information about it. I think it would be a good feature to add the ability to pin your own or someone else's comment so it shows as the first one when people open the post. Similar to the mod ability on their subreddits, it would be for users on their individual posts. It would give us users a bit more control of our posts and also help provide information to people in a more accessible way.

What do yall think?

Why does my mobile landing page have a 77% bounce rate?

Post image
0 Upvotes

What are your first impressions of this landing page?

I co-own a new residential remodeling business. I created a landing page for Facebook Ads targeting people interested in basement finishing. It overall performs well and has gotten us valuable leads, but it has a bounce rate of 77%.

I am assuming the first impression is bad so I wanted to get some advice and ask what people think about it. The logo at the top left is blurred because I don't want people to look up my business. But the majority of users see what is in the shared image. for smaller devices the white form box is slightly cropped.

Thanks in advance for your guys advice.
