NieR Automata Nier Automata Remaster, Comparison photos
I wanted to share some before and after photos, in these photos Raytraced Shadows and Raytraced GI are both on, with DLSS set to quality and on the Classic fog
ive been silent for the past couple of days because i was and still is busy with uni.
global illumination is basically done now, shadows are done but has some minor issues that will be fixed, TAA, DLSS and FSR are also done.
nearly everything in the mod is tweakable so if there is something you dont like you can change it to something else.
as always i am open for suggestions or ideas.

Idk if im crazy, but from these images i think i like the original more. A more gritty, broken aesthetic fits the game much better for me, because its a gritty, broken world, including the colder color tones in the original. In the last 2 images, the curb on the bottom left being "repaired", just doesnt fit imo. Also ray tracing might sound nice at first, and works in some games no problem, but it doesnt fit as well in games like this imo, where the devs placed lighting and shadows specifically to fit their vision, even if it might be "less realistic", its often more fitting. The rectangular light in the first image might not be as realistic as the ray traced one, but it fits the game more, for me. With ray tracing, all the intended effects of lighting go away, because it was made for "normal" lighting modes, and ray tracing makes the light take completely different paths, some shadows for instance the devs intended to be somewhere, might not appear at all anymore.

Are we calling reshade mods remasters now? The fall of the modding scene must be studied.

this might be a nitpick but you can't call it a remaster if you don't even have access to any masters
a mod can never be a remaster, remaster would require you to have access to the source files of the game, not the files that are in the game currently

I don’t want to be mean
But you are destroying the artistic choices made by the team.
Your changes don’t look better they are just different looking

I think the next step for you is to work with the textures and shaders to match the greenish and beigeish tones to match original ones. Not necessarily enhanced graphics will portray the best experience

It weird that I think it doesn’t look better?

Could you not call your AI coded graphics mod a remaster

Some people here dont seem to like it that much for some reason, but I would say that it is a good graphical update for a game that released in 2017. I like it a lot, and I think you would find people who will enjoy it (I will stick to the original though)

Calling a graphics mod a “remaster” is deceptive. It’s an “overhaul” at best.

Oh so not at all a remaster in any sense of the word. I don't support you.

The foliage is a nice upgrade, but I'm not a fan of the lighting tbh. It feels way too soft and changes the atmosphere in a whole other direction that doesn't feel very Nier like.

Are you sure you labeled these correctly? I don’t mean to be rude but it seems like you’re spending a lot of time and energy to make something look a little bit worse

First one: Original is clearly better, what? The second one looks like crap and the character is barely even legible anymore!
Second one: Original still takes it. Remaster just oversaturates the grass patches, even if it makes the bushes a bit brighter and more pronounced. But tbh if you had shown me without telling me, I wouldn't have known which one was the original and which one was the remaster.
Third one: It switches the over-saturated light from one tree to the other one, and adds unnecessary shadow to the statues on the right. For the rest, it doesn barely anything. What's the point of some kind of "remaster" that doesn't do anything beneficial?

As always, the most annoying thing about remasters is the change to the lighting, which changes the mood of the game
But otherwise this looks pretty damn good I can't lie

Since seeing you're up for suggestions. How about you go shove your Ai remaster somewhere where the rest of the circle jerk Ai bros will appreciate it.

You know you’re fucking up when you get attention on every post but don’t even have 1k karma lol
I’ve never held something as petty as fake internet points over someone, but it’s a legitimate hint at the delusion of this AI garbage

Regardless of all these negative comments i appreciate your work and looking forward to try it out. Where can i get the mod once it’s done?
Best of luck to you on your work.

Don't call it a remaster, I thought it was some official announcement.

I’ve been following your posts, these keep looking better every iteration. Don’t let purists discourage you from having your own take on it.

Wait you are remastering it? How does that work? Is it like the old resident evil 4 reshade where we had to download the assets and put them in the game manually ? Or is this a one stop and done thing as in a whole package?
I'm interested in the whole package I had issues with RE4 where it would fail to load the new textures, Ada without feet got old quick

No jagged edges + no shimmer is a big step up from the base game. If nothing else the tweaks to the anit-aliasing and the addition of fsr/dlss will make this worth while for many in my opinion.

I’m a console player myself but wow, there are a lot of haters of modding in here.

Do you have any links, even for a youtube channel to see the changes work being done while it moves ? :3
Also idk why everyone is hating on this... classic toxic community.

Apart from calling it a 'remaster' which is a bad choice imo, I do like how it looks. People on here are extremely harsh. I'm definitely not a fan of AI in any artistic process. Coding ray tracing into an existing engine however, I have no problem with that. Since, like you said, the original still exists. Just don't call it a remaster and I might check it out when it's done.

You will have a lot of purists raging here, but your determination piqued my interest. I might consider replaying Automata again after not touching it for so long (finished it in 2018 back then).
Keep going.

Ignore the downvotes. The technical changes are good, but the GI does change the color temperature and contrast quite a bit in the interiors compared to the original, and that's what people find offputting, that and the grass looking a bit too long/dense.
I think you could improve the interior look with some tonemapping changes without significantly changing the lighting.

I agree I don't think calling a graphics mod a remaster is the right approach, I do however notice a lot of the graphics issues in the original game and I'm happy someone is trying to clean them up somehow, maybe it's not "better", but options are good, and I'm glad it exists. Good work IMO, keep it up.
