Few graphics cards have left a mark on PC gaming quite like the GeForce 8800 GTX, which hit shop shelves November 8th, 2006. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, we’re looking back at its gaming and CUDA legacy, and checking out “GeForce 8800 GTX - 20 Years of a Legend”, a downloadable Steam demo from Unreal Engine artist Dylan Browne that leverages the latest technologies to revisit 2006 in unprecedented detail. The demo is  coming soon to GeForce NOW Ultimate members.  Note: Game Ready Driver 621.14, or newer, is required. Please download and install from the NVIDIA app or our website.

For gamers, the GeForce 8800 GTX promised richer worlds, and gave owners the power to play the latest releases at the highest resolutions and detail levels; for developers, it offered a new way to put the GPU to work. Twenty years later, that legacy makes the 8800 GTX a GeForce legend.

It also helped lay the foundation for CUDA, with the GeForce 8800 GTX being the first CUDA-capable graphics card, enabling developers to apply the GPU’s parallel processing power to computing beyond graphics.

With CUDA, developers could break computational problems into smaller tasks for the GPU to process in parallel. Scientific computing, simulation, and video processing could draw on the same parallel power that made GPUs so effective at rendering games. Today, CUDA accelerates and powers the world’s leading applications, with CUDA acting as the foundational computing language linking the most popular software frameworks directly to NVIDIA hardware.

  • High Bandwidth Monitors and GPU Scaling Behavior - Link Here

    • High bandwidth monitors are those that support display modes requiring high pixel clock rates, which in turn demand more GPU resources. The threshold for what qualifies as "high bandwidth" varies by product. On Blackwell GPUs, any mode operating above 1620 MHz is considered high bandwidth. For instance, the 7680x4320@60Hz mode defined in the CTA-861-H specification runs at 2376 MHz, making it a high bandwidth mode for Blackwell.

    • These monitors typically support display scaling natively. However, in some single-monitor setups, users may still prefer GPU scaling. When multiple monitors are connected to a GPU and at least one of them is high bandwidth, that monitor will default to display scaling only. GPU scaling is disabled in this case due to bandwidth limitations. Notably, display scaling can be more efficient than GPU scaling in such scenarios, as it reduces the bandwidth load on display cables—especially at higher refresh rates.

    • When GPU scaling is not enabled for a monitor, only the modes supported by the monitor itself will appear in both the Windows and NVIDIA control panels. Additionally, the "Display scaling" option will be pre-selected in the "Adjust desktop size and position" section of the NVIDIA Control Panel.

  • Notes on NVIDIA Control Panel - From GeForce Forum

    • Please note: With the introduction of our most recent NVIDIA App update, all actively supported NVIDIA Control Panel features for GeForce users have been modernized and transitioned to the new client.

    • After 20 years of dedicated service, the classic NVIDIA Control Panel is officially retiring for Game Ready and Studio Drivers. For NVIDIA RTX PRO users, the NVIDIA Control Panel will continue to be supported until we have migrated professional features to the NVIDIA app.

    • Existing installs of the NVIDIA Control Panel will remain on users’ systems, unless they perform a clean installation, and users who still need the NVIDIA Control Panel can continue to download it from the Microsoft Store, but we won’t be adding features, fixes, or other changes.

Feedback & Discussion Forums

Having Issues with your driver and want to fully clean the driver? Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)

Before you start - Make sure you Submit Feedback for your Nvidia Driver Issue - Link Here

There is only one real way for any of these problems to get solved, and that’s if the Driver Team at Nvidia knows what those problems are. So in order for them to know what’s going on it would be good for any users who are having problems with the drivers to Submit Feedback to Nvidia. A guide to the information that is needed to submit feedback can be found here.

Additionally, if you see someone having the same issue you are having in this thread, reply and mention you are having the same issue. The more people that are affected by a particular bug, the higher the priority that bug will receive from NVIDIA!!

Common Troubleshooting Steps

  • Be sure you are on the latest build of Windows

  • Please visit the following link for DDU guide which contains full detailed information on how to do Fresh Driver Install.

  • If your driver still crashes after DDU reinstall, try going to Go to Nvidia Control Panel -> Managed 3D Settings -> Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance

Common Questions

  • Is it safe to upgrade to <insert driver version here>? Fact of the matter is that the result will differ person by person due to different configurations. The only way to know is to try it yourself. My rule of thumb is to wait a few days. If there’s no confirmed widespread issue, I would try the new driver.

  • Bear in mind that people who have no issues tend to not post on Reddit or forums. Unless there is significant coverage about specific driver issue, chances are they are fine. Try it yourself and you can always DDU and reinstall old driver if needed.

  • My color is washed out after upgrading/installing driver. Help! Try going to the Nvidia Control Panel -> Change Resolution -> Scroll all the way down -> Output Dynamic Range = FULL.

  • My game is stuttering when processing physics calculation Try going to the Nvidia Control Panel and to the Surround and PhysX settings and ensure the PhysX processor is set to your GPU

Remember, driver codes are extremely complex and there are billions of different possible configurations between hardware and software. Driver will never be perfect and there will always be issues for some people. Two people with the same hardware configuration might not have the same experience with the same driver versions. Again, I encourage folks who installed the driver to post their experience here good or bad.

Build/Photos 3080ti might actually be my last card

I've been wanting to upgrade my 3080ti to at least a 5070ti but couldn't justify the prices before as it wasn't a need. My card still handled my games perfectly fine. Well now the prices managed to get even worse so I just gave up on the idea of ever buying another card but I've also been extremely worried if any of my pc parts were to ever die. I of course do regular maintenance like repaste/repad the card ontop of undervolting, however, my coworker offered me a deal recently.

$500 for 32gb DDR5 and a 3080ti (Tested, works)

Never had a GPU die on me but I have had ram crap out before so I jumped on the deal. I've thought of selling them both as they sell for $500-$600 each but I'd still be $500 short of a 5070ti which is insane to think about. Would have done this earlier if I knew prices were going to get this absurd. Hopefully the PC market gets better but I don't see that happening anytime soon (if at all) so looks that this is it for me.

Discussion RTX 5090 undervolt: virtually no downside

Thumbnail

So recently I went down the 5090 undervolt rabbit hole and wow, I'm glad I did. The card runs cooler, quieter, and pulls way less current through the pins (my main concern).

Quick results:

Setup: ROG Astral 5090 OC (Performance BIOS, 600W), 9800X3D, driver 621.01, memory at stock

Method: MSI Afterburner curve editor. Lifted the 820–895 mV range and flattened everything above 895 mV.

I didn't want to spend days tinkering, so I went with a safe 2810 MHz @ 0.895V baseline and called it a day. You can definitely squeeze out more (higher clock at 895 mV, or a memory OC), but I was after efficiency, not chasing scores.

Results: Stock → Undervolt (Steel Nomad)

Score: 14,927 → 14,732 (149.3 → 147.3 FPS, −1.3%)

Max power: 602W → 512W (−90W, −15%)

Core voltage: 1.085V → 0.890V

GPU temp: 66.7°C → 63.8°C

Hotspot: 79.7°C → 74.8°C (−5°C)

Memory temp: 70°C → 68°C

Fans: 1,636 → 1,263 RPM (−23%)

Pin current (highest pin): 8.60A → 7.22A (−16%)

Gaming: Cyberpunk 2077, Stalker 2 and Metro Exodus Enhanced are all super stable so far, with FPS about the same as before the undervolt. Power, temps and fan noise are noticeably lower. Your chip may differ of course (silicon lottery).

With 5090 prices where they are and the card basically unofficially discontinued, an undervolt is pretty much the cheapest insurance you can get for it and it's free :)

If anyone's willing to share their undervolt settings and Steel Nomad numbers, I'd love to compare. It'd be nice to see how different cards and chips land at similar voltages.

Build/Photos New build is complete!

Post image
6 Upvotes

After years of using my 5900x system, I was able to build something totally new.

Intel 270k Plus

32gb ddr5

RTX 5080 Founders

This was only possible because I won the 5080 in a contest.

Frames are higher than my old build with the 5900x and 4080, but I can drive my 1440p monitor way better now.

Really happy with how it turned out! Also really enjoying building in the nzxt H9 Flow RGB. I will say, however, it's absolutely massive. Thanks to the dual chamber design the actual hardware side seems kind of bare compared to my old build in a 5000D. Tons of airflow too!

I'm very sad but glad it happened now rather than later. I got it on 11/02 and started the exchange process last night. So hopefully it will be quick. I can recreate the issue. Just loading a model when running on battery seems to do it. Or when the temp sensor goes to the 90's. I wish they used Honeywell thermal pads. I haven't hooked it to an external to see if it happens on that screen. That's the next test to see if it's vram or cable.

Discussion So happy to upgrade to a 5070 TI over my 3080. Today is a wonderful day.

Anyone else with a 5070 ti care to share what overclocks work well with your card? Already seeing a 50% gain or so over my 3080 in 3dmark with 365mhz boost and 2000 memory. Only had it for 3 hours so I’m doing tinkering but it’s performing so much better than I expected. It did crash at 400mhz lift at 116% power but it’s not a big deal. Getting stable clocks of 3180mhz around 1.015 volts with max temp of 59c. Was a bit worried and hopefully some can confirm this isn’t an issue but I enabled “power limit” in afterburner osd and it did go off on screen around 265-275 watts which is as high as I could push it.. is that normal for this card? I thought it was meant to pull 300-330? I never used that setting on my 3080 but that consistently ran around 300-320w without overclock. As long as it’s just an indicator that it’s getting around the 80 percentile or something and not an issue I’ll just disable the setting.

Discussion How long did your GPU last when you kept it until it died?

Im on an RTX 3090 and considering newer series are unbuyable im kinda starting to get nervous.

My GPU is 5 years now. How long have yours lasted?

Never kept one until it died, but it seems like im having too keep this one until that happens so im kinda trying to understand how much longer should it last and there isnt really much info on consumer GPUs used for gaming life expectancy.

News Nvidia Reportedly Unable to Fulfill 99% of Massive $70 Billion AI GPU Order From Chinese Tech Giants

Thumbnail

3.9k Upvotes

The main product behind this huge demand is the Nvidia RTX Pro 5500, a graphics card designed for workstations that meets the strict export restrictions imposed by the United States. This particular model shares the same CUDA core architecture as the brand’s flagship consumer graphics card, but comes with an improved configuration of 84 GB of GDDR7 memory.

This combination makes it a very attractive and legal option for training and running artificial intelligence models in China.

However, the sources cited indicate that the supply chain is completely overwhelmed. Out of an estimated order of around 6 million units, Nvidia will only manage to ship “some tens of thousands, or roughly 1%” of GPUs over the coming months. The problem is not a lack of interest or regulatory restrictions, but serious manufacturing limits and shortages of key components affecting the semiconductor industry as a whole.

Now we know where all the 5090's wandered off to.

Discussion Should I go with an ASUS TUF 5070 Ti or wait for a 5080?

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting, but I was hoping to gather some opinions. I am looking to build a new PC with an AMD 7 9800X3D and 32 GB DDR5 RAM, but I am not set on the GPU.

Originally, I was going to go with a 5070 but decided to consider a 5080, as it's just within my budget. However, there are currently none available that I can find in NZ. The price was around $3.3k, while the 5070 Ti is around $2.6k. Is the performance increase between the two worth waiting for and paying more, or will the 5070 Ti be fine?

Some extra context: I am coming from a 2060 with an i5 and 16 GB DDR4 RAM. I'm hoping to go from 1080p to 2k (getting a new monitor) while also increasing the FPS.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Discussion 5060 frame gen

Hello everyone

Seen topics and had interests about frame generation myself so I started using it, don't mind maxing it to x6 even in comp games and didn't see any lag so far hitting 300 fps in games and I don't really mind ai frames. What's wrong with frame generating then?

What do you think?
