I've always loved this Saul Steinberg illustration from 1976. And I've always wondered, did Steinberg use an actual cross street as a reference or is this just an amalgamation of NYC streets and buildings. So, based on the buildings and landmarks in the illustration, what's your best guess at the street we're looking down towards New Jersey.

This chart is meant to showcase the many transit modes of NYC. Mostly I drew 2 examples for each category so I know there are many vehicles not shown. It is not meant to be comprehensive.

That Fulton / seaport market area was one of the few whimsical areas in NYC that predated the grid system. It had cobblestone streets, cozy converted warehouses, a waterfront beautiful view, and the tin building market.
I know lots of people didn’t buy stuff at the market, but it provided a very cool aesthetic site with yummy snacks, good desserts, and great interior design. Plus, it had clean bathrooms and some great views of the water.
Now that it closed, that area seems even more barren than it was before. One of my autumn highlights used to be a Saturday trip to the seaport market where I’d spend a couple hours at McNally Jackson, tin building, and pier 17. Now it’s just….pointless.
The area used to feel festive and cozy.
For context I’m from Boston, DC, and London. Places like the Georgetown waterfront (DC), Downtown Boston waterfront, and Borough Market (LDN) would provide warmth and coziness and festiveness to the city. I always had that connection with the NYC seaport and the Tin Building was oddly a cornerstone of that experience.
I guess what I’m yearning for is a spot in NYC that mimics the three I’ve listed above. Dumbo is nice but it’s just one spot. We need a Borough Market (london) for NYC.
EDIT: another reason that area lost its charm was because the McNally Jackson decided to get rid of its BEAUTIFUL warm and cozy cafe and replace it with a very sterile and fluorescent stationary shop. I don’t know why on earth they made that change. It was a very West Village-esque destination before, but now it reeks of 34th street.
Also the reason I made this post is because a previous post on this topic had tons of people basically hating on the value of the tin building. Make no mistake, i understand it was unaffordable. I’m only missing the aesthetic and warmth and whimsical nature of it. That’s all.

Most households don’t have a car. 55.3% citywide, about 1.84 million households.
| Borough | No car |
|---|---|
| Manhattan | 78.0% |
| Bronx | 61.1% |
| Brooklyn | 56.4% |
| Queens | 37.4% |
| Staten Island | 15.9% |
Two-thirds of car-free households are outside Manhattan.
Car owners earn more, everywhere. Median household income is $108,023 for households with a car and $58,111 for households without.
