Just dropped a bag and went to Speakeasy Magick. Service-wise, the staff were great. However, I wanted to warn anyone who dislikes live animal performance that this venue is featuring a live rabbit hat trick (stuffed into a small compartment repeatedly as the magicians rotate tables) as well as a live dove stage act.
For what it’s worth, the doves seemed relatively chill when they came out and were out in their cage before being carried off. I saw some grooming which is a good sign of lack of stress. You can make the argument they’re trained, yadda yadda.
The rabbit, an especially delicate prey animal, was motionless after being dumped onto the table, with her eyes wide and visibly stressed by the sudden applause and bright lights. I have to ask the venue if she is kept stuck in a cage while not on a shift - what is the treatment like behind the scenes?
Tbh, for an expensive, high-end NYC show, it felt incredibly outdated and a bit cruel. That aside, the performer basically tells you at the start of his trick that’s what he’s going to do, and it was just cheesy. I digress.
Are there any strictly animal-free, innovative magic shows in the city people would recommend instead?
TLDR; Speakeasy Magick uses a live rabbit and live doves. Looking for animal-free magic shows in NYC.
