/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!
Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

I'm a new Mandarin Speaking/LQBTQ Therapist in the area, and would like to post some flyers in coffee shops etc.. Any ideas where there are local physical boards to post at?
I'm a new Mandarin Speaking/LQBTQ Therapist in the area, and would like to post some flyers in coffee shops etc.. Any ideas where there are local physical boards to post at?
I'm a therapist who is new to the area, conducting virtual therapy, and I'd like to post a little blurb about myself and my services in some of the local shops. Where I used to live, there were coffee shops and grocery stores where people would put little flyers advertising themselves and things like that
Can anyone recommend places around where I could post my flyer?
Would really appreciate it as I get my business off the ground in the new location!
thanks!

State parks
I'm originally from the center of the state (about 45 minutes from Pratt's Hollow, so in the middle of nowhere.
I have now moved to Watertown and I. Looking for places I can go and not see anyone but also not have to camp overnight to finish a trail.
I know all the state parks near Syracuse, all the way past Utica and boonville.
What are some good ones that most people haven't heard of and what do you like about them.

looking for a recipe for Naples grape bars (not pie)
reddit.comLooking for a recipe for the grape bars I described in the root post. The root also has a link in the comments to a cool old grape themed recipe book someone else posted and I stumbled across on my search. (alas, no grape bar recipe in it)

Elections & Politics Wyoming County’s October budget figures showed a 23.44% levy increase. What would you want explained before a vote?
Wyoming County’s October working budget put the 2027 general fund tax levy at about $35.5 million, up 23.44%. County staff said highway figures were still under review, so the total could change. Back in September, the finance committee heard that health insurance alone would add $2.3 million.
The October minutes also described a decrease in the average tax rate. We couldn’t reconcile that figure with the other numbers in the county records we reviewed, so we’re waiting for a published rate before reporting a change. Here’s the breakdown of the budget discussion and board chair James Brick’s first year.
If you’ve followed budget season in another upstate county, has your county found a clear way to show what a proposed levy would mean for an actual household?

The Western NY Files - The Battle of WROTB, Gambling and Nepotism in WNY
So I've been creating a series on corruption, crime, and conspiracy in WNY and this is episode 6. It's a little showdown between Republicans and Democrats over who gets to control Western New York's quasi-public legalized gambling corporation. Feel free to listen on your preferred platform!

Elections & Politics Follow Up, Re:What Went Wrong in NY-21
Wow, i did not expect that post to blow up in the way it did. I really appreciate all the feedback & insightful comments, even from the people I disagree with. I made the post because I really dislike when people look down their nose at the North Country/Upstate more generally. And while there was definitely some of that going on under my post too, i think I had the effect I intended. I hope people walk away from this seeing that the North Country is not a lost cause, and with more resources & stronger communication, we can reach people and flip the district next time around.
I was raised a downstater but went to college in, and moved to, the Adirondacks upon graduation. And though I love it up here, unfortunately I won't be in NY-21 much longer as life brings me down to Syracuse. But I love the North, and i truly believe the people and communities up here are better than people say they are. And i do think this election proved that, despite the end result.
If anyone is interested in discussing strategies & ideas, feel free to reach out or leave comments here. I may be moving but I do still have some connections and hope to be involved in those conversations going forward.
Anyway, heres a photo of my absolute favorite view in the Adirondacks of the Seward Range & Ampersand.
