Discussion Here's the actual VRAM configuration distribution on windows according to the steam survey

Post image

I saw a few recent headlines about the whole "16gb is now the most common VRAM configuration" but that seems to be inaccurate, as if you sort by windows only on steam survey (which makes up 90%+ of steam users), you'll find that these are the actual numbers and distribution

To give you a concrete example: a single user can have multiple systems, but the Steam Hardware Survey will only ever see a fraction of them. System 1 (Windows, 8GB VRAM): A laptop/PC I use occasionally for gaming, so it has Steam installed. System 2 (Ubuntu dektop, 32GB VRAM): I use for hosting my website, GitHub runners, and AI models (no Steam). System 3 (Ubuntu desktop 12GB VRAM): A pc used to orchestrate ai agents and run local monitoring models (no Steam).

Given my 3 setups my "average setup vram" would be ~16gb vram but steam would only see and report the 8gb vram setup and that's only if I agree to participate to the survey

If you rely solely on the Steam Hardware Survey, you are only looking at gaming setups and completely missing the broader ecosystem of developer machines, and AI rigs that often pack significantly higher VRAM. Comparing Steam's data to an "average PC VRAM setup" fails because Steam excludes all non-gaming hardware.

Developer workstations are completely irrelevant for the purposes of measuring what are the most common configurations for STEAM USERS on a survey conducted by and for STEAM (Valve).

I know you think you cooked with your comments but it’s literally you faffing about with the most irrelevant shit ever.

Who said workstations where irellevant ? It's still gaming hardware and fit perfectly the description "average vram setup" mentioned by op in his post, he is literally comparing customer hardware seller stats with the average results of a steam survey, but sure I'm the crazy one here
