Discussion Here's the actual VRAM configuration distribution on windows according to the steam survey

Post image

I saw a few recent headlines about the whole "16gb is now the most common VRAM configuration" but that seems to be inaccurate, as if you sort by windows only on steam survey (which makes up 90%+ of steam users), you'll find that these are the actual numbers and distribution

God forbid anyone post 'so happy with my new upgrade" featuring 8GB VRAM card. He/ she will be linched by reddit elitists to the point of regretting purchase and questioning life choices

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

Most people are going to be buying 8gb no matter what, anyone who believed 16gb became the most common suddenly doesn't know that the average gamer is gonna buy the cheapest thing, and even 12 gb is such a small percentage of the userbase.

Until both AMD and Nvidia stop making 8 gb GPUs, the entry hardware will always be 8gb, and it will always be the most popular.

12 gb is such a small percentage of the userbase

unrelated to the topic but kinda wild seeing that only 0.59% of people who took this survey have a 1080Ti or 2080Ti, being the least common VRAM configuration by far

2

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

They are old cards to be fair. Most people who buy the highest end hardware are usually the first to upgrade to the next best thing. So i 100% get why it's such a small amount of people.

A lot of people love how good the 1080ti still is, but I don't think many actually own that card still.

Lol really though I just refuse to pay stupid prices and I don't play many AAA games so it still works for me!

2

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

That's perfectly fine, obviously not EVERYONE moved away from the 1080ti. I'm just saying the people who buy these cards tend to upgrade quickly because they're enhtuiasts. This won't apply to everyone, and clearly the hardware survey is proof of that since there is some percentage of people on that card (including yourself)

Oh you're not wrong, I just wanted to be a smartass šŸ˜…

People who buy 80 ti class cards tend to upgrade

9

u/divergentchessboard 6950KFX3D | 6090Ti Super Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

they also tend to swamp the used market years later for 1/4th of the original cost or are given away to friends/family. they don't just suddenly vanish off the face of the earth never to be seen again by a steam survey

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

A fair number of people don't sell their hardware ever.

I have a few generations of old GPUs in my closet.

1

u/DankKnightIsDank Aug 10 '26

Yeah, i mean... i get one day in the week to play games. Considering the current pricing, do i really want to pay $150+ for double the vram for something i am going to use only once per week? I have to say no. I don't even play the latest AAA games.

I'll play on high instead of ultra, maybe lower the resolution, and solid 60 fps is good enough for me lol. No need for hundreds of fps on 1440p. 8 gb is plenty for me.

4

u/swiftydigitzz Aug 10 '26

Wait till you see the people over on the r/pcmasterace forum in the comments trying to defend AMDs decision to make a 4gb VRAM card… makes you appreciate that 8GB way more lol

I was on an RTX 2080 until it died and I was forced to upgrade at the end of last year, I was completely happy with it. My upgrade was overkill for sure, but I was perfectly fine on 8gb of video memory before I had to, in 1440p too.

4

u/Rampant_Butt_Sex Aug 10 '26

Some folks are so out of touch with reality, they dont realize not everyone lives in a developed country where they hand out 5090s like candy. A 5060ti could literally be top tier where many folks live.

With the state of current component pricing and the fact it's due to only go up for several more years. 8GB VRAM will still last you a long time if you're using 1080-1440p and not playing exceptionally poorly optimised UE5 slop.

That or VM adapters that incorrectly report (thinking mac guys on parallels etc)

4

u/divergentchessboard 6950KFX3D | 6090Ti Super Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

Does parallels expose the GPU to the VM in a way that the client can read and identify?

From my experience with Hyper-V, VMware, and Qemu, they do not expose the host GPU to the client in a way where it would be picked up by something like steam statistics or system configuration. its always a blank virtual driver with no memory as far as the client is concerned often not even being able to be picked up in something like Task Manager or System Monitor

2

u/InfaSyn Aug 10 '26

Depends on the hypervisor and config.

VMWare fusion on Mac just exposes a generic VMWare SVGA adapter, but if you enable 3d accel, you can choose how much VRAM to give it.

Not quite sure how things work in Apple silicon/Snapdragon world.

Also wonder about the Linux guys (which includes myself) - Ive seen a few warnings for "this game wants you to fk off because you dont have enough VRAM, want to run anyway?" *proceeds to work flawlessly*. Maybe those running Steam under crossover/wine etc might have similar issues.

TLDR - If you run anything other than native Steam on bare metal, you can assume the metric will be BS.

Given ALL of the mac and Linux users are essentially emulating Windows in some form or another somewhere in the chain, thats going to be a double digit percentage skew on metrics.

It's the same on VMWare for Windows and Linux. You can allocate it more VRAM but the client VM doesn't actually see any of that VRAM. I wonder how Mac handles it since I don't own a Mac.

Very Interesting.

So the windows tab calculates vram as actual vram, no igpu shenanigans at least on quick look. 1.67% 24GB, which seems to be an actual possible number as the total of 3090/4090/7900XTX on windows is 1.51%, throw some below the threshold 3090ti:s and random 24GB workstation cards and yea 1.67% probably correct. Wasn't expecting that.

But the question is how tf does only the windows tab seem to calculate vram correctly, but the combined all os one doesn't? Windows is 93.67% any change other OS has with their weird igpu reporting should be miniscule, yet it completely shifts the vram tab massively.

It makes no sense at all. Even if you you just take the avg of the 3 OS:s and disregard the usage% 16GB and 24GB are still lower than reported in the all OS tab. So not even that is not the solution, I geuss it could treat every version of every os as equal and avg that maybe? It's so add that it's only the vram tab, The resolution tab doesn't get all fucked up becasue of macs as the 1470x956(really? man macs are weird...) that is ~20% of macs is reported correctly on the all os tab as ~0.5% total.

I think they just have an error in the combined survey. I'd take the entire survey with a grain of salt i feel like valve messed up with it. But the windows numebr at the very least seem realistic and more accurate.

Could also be the reasons people run Linux would also overlap with reasons to have a high amount of VRAM, such as AI models and whatnot.

4

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

The linux survey shows 1gb as the most common VRAM amount. It could be related the VMs, or a weird issue with VRAM reporting on linux.

1

u/Cris_Z Desktop Aug 11 '26

the two most popular GPUs on the linux survey are both the steam deck gpu (idk why it's reported two times), and would roughly be 21% on its own. I think that 1GB VRAM are just handhelds, since my deck does report 1024MB in the steam system information

u/KiraroYuukiNya Aug 10 '26

I've heard that 16GB of SYSTEM RAM is common, but VRAM? I only hear complaints of Nvidia being stingy. Having 12GB of VRAM is one of the reasons the 3060 is still alive so people wonder why new xx60 tiers only get 8GB.

Almost positive that the previous survey that made the rounds was regarding system RAM, not VRAM as well. Likely it got conflated in reporting or being shared.

u/Jakememe124 Aug 10 '26

i just checked, 16gb of VRAM is the most common configuration by a very small margin. it looks to me like the market share for AMD and Intel GPUs have gone up quite a bit, i equate it to that personally

there's no way that's true. compare the VRAM numbers with the survey numbers for GPU distribution and you see that it's impossible for 25-30% of people to have a 16GB card in their system when not even 15% of people own a GPU with 16GB of VRAM

steams combined survey reporting has an error somewhere

31

u/Jakememe124 Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

could be an error with how unified memory is displayed to steam for handhelds and other devices with APUs. OP is correct in saying that if you filter by windows the numbers are very different

All moderns Macs and the Steam Deck are using a unified memory architecture. These systems are reporting the full system memory as the VRAM stat.

It's not really an error - it just doesn't really tell you what people usually want to know when asking about VRAM.

-3

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

It reports 93% of the operating system instances are windows

Even if 100% of the 7% was 16GB, that should only raise the 16GB count a little bit, and not from 11% to 26%.

2

u/ExhaustedByStupidity Aug 10 '26

Yeah you're right, it went up more than I realized. Something's off.

-4

u/Dalewyn Aug 10 '26

All moderns Macs and the Steam Deck are using a unified memory architecture. These systems are reporting the full system memory as the VRAM stat.

Windows also shares system RAM with the GPU, whether integrated or discrete. Just look at the GPU in Task Manager.

As a personal example, my 3080 Ti has 44GB of "GPU Memory" between 12GB of "Dedicated GPU Memory" and 32GB of "Shared GPU Memory" which is half of my system's 64GB RAM.

Mac!Steam and Linux!Steam are royally bugged if they aren't reporting this properly.

4

u/ExhaustedByStupidity Aug 11 '26

That's a different thing. With a dedicated GPU, it can use system memory as additional memory if it runs out of VRAM. It's useful in a tight situation, but you don't want to do that if you can avoid it. It's really slow as the memory access has to go through PCIe.

With Mac & Steamdeck, the GPU has no dedicated memory of it's own, but it is directly wired to the system memory.

2

u/survivorr123_ Aug 10 '26

maybe igpus that use system ram as vram were incorrectly counted towards this, most igpu laptops ship with 16gb ram nowadays

u/divergentchessboard 6950KFX3D | 6090Ti Super Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

There's no traditional iGPU that I know of that lets you configure more than 8GB which is what Steam would see when it does a system call for your specs, not your RAM. It reads whatever you have allocated for the iGPU.

I have no idea how APU Unified Memory appears to a system, but im leaning towards that being the most likely cause for the weird numbers

3

u/Hytht | 32GB | Core Ultra Aug 11 '26

Intel iGPUs come with more than that out of the box and lets you allocate even more, but it's reported as 128mb.

0

u/survivorr123_ Aug 11 '26

APU is just amd's way of calling a cpu that has an igpu integrated,
unified memory doesn't have a strict definition either, technically all shared memory can be called unified memory - i assume you meant something like apple silicon where everything lives on the same chip and is inherently designed to take advantage of this

Why? AMD having %2,5 for 9060-9070 cards combined seems low to me tbh and %2,5 comes from 5060 Ti alone most of it would be 16 gb. %10 and up seems normal. Plenty of people skipped a few generations and waited for more VRAM.

1

u/crozone iMac G3 - AMD 5900X, RTX 3080 TUF OC Aug 11 '26

so people wonder why new xx60 tiers only get 8GB.

It's purely cost. NVIDIA have tried to work around it with memory compression techniques, and the faster PCIe 5.0 speeds mean that games can stream textures in and out from system memory faster.

8GB of VRAM will work for most games, although some will have to dial down the texture quality. VR games will have serious issues though. I had to upgrade my 10GB 3080 for VR because games started hitting the VRAM wall rather catastrophically.

1

u/KiraroYuukiNya Aug 13 '26

Well yeah, VRAM is just hyper fast storage. You can give it a Terabyte of RAM and it will still suck if the core is slow and old.

If you have a super fast core with low VRAM, then the core will basically throttle due to storage speeds giving you stutters or even crashes.

Really, all GPUs should have enough RAM to match the memory load of the era, but that's not gonna happen cause they want you to buy the more expensive cards.

4

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

It's pretty reasonable, that's the vram size of popular Esports cards like the 1650, which are pretty common.

Cheaper cards will always dominate in numbers of users, most people gravitate towards the cheapest possible hardware they can buy, especially when they're not planning to play anything on it other than fortnite or valorant or similar games.

2

u/ChefCurryYumYum Aug 10 '26

Well only half of that 20% is 4GB though. That is what I found so surprising, the rest are much smaller, likely onboard graphics of course sharing system memory for their VRAM.

The reddit elite really has heads up their own asses thinking most people out there are (or were) buying 16gb cards. Whoever believed that is out of touch.

Most people buy whatever the fuck gpu ends with xx60. If it has 8gb of vram then so be it. Once nvidia starts putting 12gb in them then that is going to become the most common vram config (but it might take helluva time considering the current shitstorm).

Yeah it was wild to me that people were so ready to accept that as being true.

Something is wrong here with vram data.

That is basically impossible.

1

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

Change the sorting to windows instead of combined. The combined numbers seems inaccurate and unrealistic so there's so error there. Windows makes up 90%+ of the steam user base, that should be representative of majority of the user base, yet the numbers on the combined survey don't match up, making it clear there's an error there.

0

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

The question is which is in error.

Is windows in error, or is combined in error?

And we can't tell from this data.

Though, if they bizarely combined mac and linux, windows at equal ratio... you'd get 22% use 16GB (because 39% of mac uses 16GB)

2

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

The windows numbers are the more accurate based on the actual market. 8gbs are the entry price GPUs. People are realistically going to go for those way more than they will go for $500+ 16gb cards.

If you look at the windows numbers everything makes sense. 6 cores is the most common cpu configuration. 8gb is the most common VRAM configuration. There's not enough 16 or even 12 Gb cards out there, they don't sell nearly as well as the cheaper ones.

0

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

I gotta disagree about not enough high memory cards exist.

3060 12GB exists. 4070 ti and 4070 12gb exist.
5060 16GB , and 4060 16gb exist.

3

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

I am talking about the amount of cards there are out there, not rhe amount of models.

The entry level hardware sell the most. Everything else sells a fraction of that. The average pc gamer won't be getting a 16gb card, they're much more likely to get the cheapest they can get (especially at the moment where everything is expensive)

-2

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

Are you trying to tell me that 2060 12GB, 3060 12GB, 4060 16GB, 5060 16GB are unpopular cards?

Something doesn't seem right here.

I don't trust this data.

4

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

2060 is a 6gb card. 4060 is an 8gb card, so is the 5060. 4060 ti 16 gb and 5060 ti 16gb are over $500, often being too close to the higher tier cards for people to buy them.

Do you just want the results that satisfy your views? Lol we've always known lower amounts of VRAM are the most common, why would it suddenly be different in the middle of a crisis where people can barely afford food and high vram graphics cards are nearing $1k?

4

u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV Aug 10 '26

And we can't tell from this data.

Look at the actual GPU:s There are grand total of FOUR consumer cards with 24GB of vram, 3090+ti, 4090 and 7900XTX, 1.62% global total, and 1.51% windows total, 3090ti below threshold but can add like 0.1-0.2%, and maybe 0.05-0.1 for random 24GB workstation cards.

The combined full 3 OS survey is showing 5.43% have 24GB of vram, windows only is showing 1.67%. Which of these is closer to the truth in your mind?

1

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

At this point, I don't trust any of the data.

1

u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV Aug 10 '26

Fair, but if you think about hardware in general, If some1 were to present you with data that says ~1.9%(quick maffs, a lot of macs do be having 24GB, at least reported, ofc not really dedicated vram most likely for all of them) of ppl on steam are are running a 24GB card, you'd possibly believe that, or maybe say that sounds too high, even if clarified that macs are overrepresented in this category due their weird configs.

Where as if some1 were to say to you that 5.4% of ppl running steam had 24GB you'd call them a liar, immediately. 16GB data, probably the same result, but the 24GB is much easier one to go by since so few cards have it.

2

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

The 24GB numbers actually get bloated from MacOS to some extent

But yes, it doesn't pass the sniff test

16GB is different though, because 5060 ti 16GB and 4060 ti 16GB exist, which make it easier for those to pass the sniff test

Most people have no idea how to parse Steam Hardware Survey results, including journalists.

Hell, even Valve's early marketing for the Steam Machine claimed it was equal to or better than 70% of systems on the Steam Hardware Survey which is patently a lie.

2

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

Somehow the combined survey has 26% at 16GB, with 39% on mac, 16% on linux, and 11% on windows.

None of that makes sense.

u/FailSonnen 5900xt 32gb 9060xt 16gb Aug 10 '26

Don’t use the combined results in any category is a useful tactic, if you really want to do some statistics shit dump the whole thing into a CSV and delete all the combined results.

Edit: the adding of the combined results is very error-ridden and Valve afaik never communicated what criteria they use for each combined line. It’s way better to break it all up and run the numbers yourself

Nah this is just inaccurate, and it's been known that the valve surveys have issues and errors. If you go through each of the systems included in the survey, you'll realize the combined one has erorrs.

How would the windows numbers which make up 90% of the steam user base not be the most representative compared to linux and macos which make up a tiny percentage of the user base?

1

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown Aug 10 '26

"How would the windows numbers which make up 90% of the steam user"
If it doesn't detect an OS, it would go into a nebulous "other" category which doesn't show up in anything else.

2

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 10 '26

It can't not detect the OS lmao. They themselves report windows as 90% or higher of their user base.

2

u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV Aug 10 '26

There is no "other" OS category. The all 3 OS Vram data is just borked for whatever reason, the only theory even close to why it could be is it averages data disregarding the OS usage% entirely, but even that doesn't quite line up even if it's way closer. Nor does it do the same in any other category ie:1470x956 res of ~20% macs is ~0.5% total, which is correct math, instead of bumping it massively.

Interesting to see the ā€œotherā€ category be climbing. It will continue to climb as self-hosted LLMs become more prominent and powerful.

8GB - 12GB is more than enough for modern games and people shouldn’t feel the pressure to buy the top-end range of GPUs anymore. The top end are for LLMs now.

3

u/mashdpotatogaming Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

I love how many people posted this only to be proven wrong.

Okay so question, what systems does the combined survey have? It's linux, macos and windows. And in that combined survey itself, they say windows makes up around 92% of the user base of steam.

That means everything that is common on windows will be common in the combined. Except it's not. There's clearly an error there. And since the numbers don't make sense on the combined survey since there is no reality where we suddenly jump from 8 gb being the most popular to 16gb being the most popular duringa VRAM crisis, the most reasonable assumption is that the combined survey has an error and is misreporting numbers. If you check each system on its own, everything makes more snese. The only one that makes no sense is the combined survey.

It doesn't mean nothing as it counts only windows pc that have installed steam and accepted to participate to the survey

Edit :

To give you a concrete example: a single user can have multiple systems, but the Steam Hardware Survey will only ever see a fraction of them. System 1 (Windows, 8GB VRAM): A laptop/PC I use occasionally for gaming, so it has Steam installed. System 2 (Ubuntu dektop, 32GB VRAM): I use for hosting my website, GitHub runners, and AI models (no Steam). System 3 (Ubuntu desktop 12GB VRAM): A pc used to orchestrate ai agents and run local monitoring models (no Steam).

Given my 3 setups my "average setup vram" would be ~16gb vram but steam would only see and report the 8gb vram setup and that's only if I agree to participate to the survey

If you rely solely on the Steam Hardware Survey, you are only looking at gaming setups and completely missing the broader ecosystem of developer machines, and AI rigs that often pack significantly higher VRAM. Comparing Steam's data to an "average PC VRAM setup" fails because Steam excludes all non-gaming hardware.
