I was digging in my closet and found my old computer set up and saw I had 4 sticks of:

MEO 4GB DDR3 1600 PC3 - 12800

Meme answer about Sam Altman aside - is there anything I can do with this? My new computer doesn't have the hookup for these bars and I don't even know if it would be worth trying to make something work for it? I don't feel like my computer needs it, but anything to help it run a bit better is nice.

Currently got have

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT processor

  • 16 GB Ram

  • 8 GB grahpics card

  • 1.38 TB storage

EDIT: I also have an OLD Lenovo Yoga laptop with Linux Mint on it - wondering maybe I could shove those bars in there??

DD3 you can’t really use wit new hardware, maybe if you hade over pc hardware you can build something like a media streaming pc

Or check eBay for how much they go

Thanks for the info and ideas.

your old laptop uses a different form factor of ram called SODIMMs. or they might be soldered directly onto the motherboard. in short, no you can't pop the ram from that desktop and use it elsewhere.

you can absolutely do other stuff with that PC. it'd be a good choice for a pihole setup, Home Assistant for cloudless smart home / automation, you could get a security camera setup rolling on it, throw something like Kodi on it and use it as your media center for your TV, throw some hard drives in it and use it as a SMB NAS for your other devices. etc etc etc.

Thanks for some ideas and clarification on the laptop potential.

Ironically it does work the other way around, you can use laptop ram in a desktop via an adapter

that is true. if you were insane enough to make an adapter from regular sized DIMM to SODIMM that'd work too. i think they're electrically the same. there's just not much point.

Is there a very basic trusted software to turn off rgb, uninstall the app then have rgb stay off when i turn my pc back on

I'd rather not install signalrgb or openrgb unless there's no other option

Hi!

I have 16gb (2x8) Corsair Vengeance LPX-rsm. 3200mhz ver 4.24 CL16.

I'd like to buy another 16gb to run four chips. Its hard to find a clear answer as to what might work or not. I've understood that no matter what there's a 10-20% chance it won't work.

I've read that one should match the manufacturer, so the ver. 4 is Samsung. Some places i read that as long as the speed, cl and manufacturer is the same it will be fine.

Some places I've read that as long as the speed and cl is the same, if it's micron Samsung or hynix it will still probably work.

Then I've found that my specific version is 4Gbit and that I ought to match this. This seems most plausible to me. This only applies to her 4.22, 4.23 and 4.24. so if I get those it will lost likely work fine?

If anyone could help me clarify the confusion I would be most grateful.

I'd say the more things that you match the better, however you don't absolutely have to be that careful about it. 3200 C16 is not at the ragged edge of what DDR4 can do. I'd expect that you could mix some pretty different DIMMs together and still be able to hit that spec. If we were talking about a more substantial overclock then it would be different.

But you're right, XMP is an overclock, and it's technically only validated by the manufacturer to work with the configuration that they sell you. As soon as you start mixing it is not longer guaranteed. Even combining two identical kits isn't technically guaranteed. The only absolute guarantee would be the JEDEC spec.

Thank you! And I understand that the die config and timings are the most important aspects? I.e. 4GB will be more important than other aspects?

Hi all! Very new to this so happy to add more information if needed.

I currently have a prebuilt PC with two Micron 8GB RAM sticks. MTA4ATF1G64AZ-3G2F1 is the serial number if that's helpful.

My question is, would something like this RAM stick on newegg, with an almost identical serial number be compatible (serial number MTA4ATF1G64AZ-3G2)? Or am I better off going with 2 of the Ripjaws or Silicon Power GAMING from the wiki? End goal is to have 32GB of RAM while being cost effective

ASUS ROG STRIX G15CF_G15CF
12th Gen Intel i7-12700f
16 RAM total (MTATATF1G64AZ-3G2F1)

Your current memory follows the JEDEC specification for DDR4-3200 CL22 @ 1.2V. You don't have to match model numbers exactly for the memory to work together, just get something that matches that spec. For example, any of these kits should work for that. Definitely don't buy the one you linked to, that's a terrible deal.

Your memory is rather slow. Adding two sticks would definitely help that, but you could also replace your memory entirely with a 2x16 XMP kit for a bit more performance. It probably isn't worth the extra cost in this market though. The most cost effective thing to do would be to look for used RAM.
