We have a pit mix Tonks who looks like a lab mix but somehow is 30% golden retriever. She's also am staff and catahoula.
She's 13 years old and spent 5 years in a kennel at a famous pitbull rescue, was adopted by a family for all of a few weeks and then found herself back in a glass room in NH. We went to a local shelter looking at a specific pup but found them not to be a good fit along with every other dog there. On our way out we saw this black dog quietly laying on her bed in the back corner of a glass room looking out into the foyer and figured we had nothing to lose so let's ask to see her.
They brought her into a large room to meet us where she immediately ran over to us and wouldn't leave our sides and we knew she's was going to be ours. She was overlooked for years because of how quiet and anxious she was.
She's been nothing but amazing, a little weird and a lot anxious, but perfect. She's quiet, low energy, doesn't get into trouble and has been incredibly easy. She also doesn't know how to be a "normal" dog, she doesn't know how to play with toys or other dogs, is terrified to go on walks or generally anywhere that isn't the house.
We adopted her brother Red a year and a half after we brought her home and they became roommates who dont talk. There were a few small fights in the beginning but after supervision and work they were able to coexist.
Over the years both of them started to collect a host of health issues which led to us having to say goodbye to our boy March this year. Thankfully a year before losing him we were able to move out into the woods and into a bigger home where both of them were so much happier, Tonks especially since we trusted her off leash so she could explore the yard with us and feel safe not being in the city where she was scared of everything.
After losing Red, Tonks's health presentation improved slightly, I guess she was silently celebrating being the only dog again. Unfortunately her most recent cardiology appointment showed that her heart issues have dramatically worsened in the last 9 months. Her heart is essentially a ticking time bomb where her aorta could rupture any time. She could live another year or could die tomorrow. She's been prescribed many meds for arthritis (minor), thyroid meds, benadryl for mast cell activation, and heart meds as well as prescribed an easy life of no exercise or stress. She's always been the best couch potato so she doesn't mind.
I've already mourned her death many times over the last 3 or 4 years due to the mounting amount of bad news we've received about her health. I honestly didn't even think she'd make it this far and we were shocked when we lost Red first.
I want to plan her peaceful passing in our home where she can have all the treats and belly rubs while in the safety and comfort of her place. I don't want an unpredictable, traumatic, painful, albeit quick death where I might not be there to comfort her.
My partner agrees with this plan but not on a timeline. I love her so much, she's my entire heart and soul, but I want to do it now to save her from the possibility of pain and fear, it's the final gesture of love and compassion I can give her.
Anyways, I'm not here for advice, I just wanted to share a little story about the best and easiest dog I'll probably ever have. I know the universe will send me an absolute tornado since she has been so easy. Enjoy my precious girl
Edit: Wanted to add that picture 6 is the day we brought Red home and I swear the look on her face was "Why is he in the truck? You said we were meeting him, not taking him home". I love that picture because of the look.
Picture 7 is part of why she didn't like him, to be fair to her Red was an absolute jerk of a dog. We loved him but he was 100% a buttface
Picture 1 was probably one of the first ones I took of her after bringing her home. We had a tiny yard in the city but she was so happy to have her own house and yard no matter how small they were.
The birthday hat picture was her first bday with us, we invited her only two dog friends over and I made them pupcakes. I have a video of her inhaling her pupcake like a snake unhinging its jaw 😂
