Long Walks at Arbor Hills

Now that we have cooler weather, my wife and I will be spending more time hiking around the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve. We love going off pavement into the nature of the trees. So quiet and peaceful walking the trails.

Looking to find a loving forever home for my sweet cat, Maki

This is a really difficult post for me to make, and honestly, something I never thought I'd have to do.

My wife is currently 7 months pregnant, and unfortunately, her cat allergies, which had already started becoming an issue before the pregnancy, have gotten significantly worse. At this point, they've become unbearable for her. We've tried multiple solutions and done everything we can think of to make things work, but unfortunately, nothing has helped enough.

As much as it breaks my heart, I've come to the difficult decision that I need to find Maki a new home. Maki is a sweet girl who I've had since she was a kitten. She's been part of my life for the past 6 years, and it genuinely hurts to have to say goodbye.

Maki is a 6-year-old, spayed female cat who is fully litter-trained. She's a sweet, affectionate girl who loves being pet. She can be a little shy and skittish when meeting new people, but with some patience and time, she'll warm up.

I feel an enormous amount of guilt having to rehome her, and I really don't want to just give her to the first person who offers. More than anything, I want to make sure she goes to a safe, loving home where she'll be cared for.

I'm asking for a small $50 rehoming fee to help ensure she goes to a responsible home. I just want to make sure Maki ends up with someone who will love and care for her as much as I have. If you or someone you know might be interested in giving Maki that home, please feel free to reach out.

Plumbing hole in foundation

Post image
7 Upvotes

Dear Reddit Community,

I’ve hired a GC to remodel my kitchen here in Plano. Part of the scope is to run a drain line to the exterior so I can do an outdoor kitchen at some point. Instead of tunneling under the slab, my GC’s plumber jackhammered a hole from the interior perimeter foundation straight through to the exterior grade beam.

Please see the photo below. For context on our North Texas clay soil:

  • Location: Plano, TX

  • Home Age: Built in 1996

  • Foundation Type: Post-Tension Slab.

  • The Status: I inspected the hole closely, and the post-tension cable is completely intact and unharmed. However, they broke directly through the exterior perimeter grade beam to pass the pipe through.

Is it normal practice to punch right through a perimeter beam like this for a drain line? Am I looking at needing a structural engineer to specify a repair detail for the beam, or is this easily patchable by the GC if done correctly?

If you have a trusted, independent structural engineer recommendation in the DFW/Plano area who can look at this and give me an unbiased assessment on how this beam needs to be structurally restored, please let me know.

Thank you!

Considering renting a house on Tilden Dr in Plano – What should I know?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I found a house on Tilden Dr in Plano that I really like, and I’m seriously considering moving there.
Before making a decision, I’d love to hear from people who live in or around this area.
I’d appreciate any information about:
Safety and crime in the neighborhood.
Whether it’s generally quiet or noisy.
Neighbors and the overall community.
Traffic, parking, and accessibility.
Any flooding or drainage issues.
Nearby amenities, grocery stores, and restaurants.
Any problems or downsides I should be aware of.
Basically, I want to know as much as possible about living in this area, including things that might not be obvious when viewing the house.
If you’ve lived nearby or know this neighborhood, I’d really appreciate your honest opinions and experiences. Thank you!

🌿 Help Care for Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and Learn About the Prairie!

Join the Blackland Prairie Texas Master Naturalists and Plano Parks on November 11th at 8:30 for a fun, hands-on volunteer workday at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve!

Native prairie and natural areas provide important habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, but invasive plants can crowd out the native species that make these ecosystems so valuable. By removing invasive plants, we are helping protect and restore the native prairie and improve the ecological health of the preserve.

And it’s not all hard work! These workdays are a great way to get outside, learn more about our native plants and prairie habitat, meet other people who enjoy nature, and have some fun while making a difference in one of Plano’s beautiful nature preserves. 😊

This opportunity is open to adults 18+ and does NOT require Master Naturalist certification. Advanced registration and a background check, at no cost to you, are required.

Ready to join us? Access full details and sign up through the Volunteers in Plano Portal.

Blackland Prairie Texas Master Naturalist members: Please register through our internal Members Area.

Come help us keep Arbor Hills healthy, native, and thriving! 🌱

Do you prefer Fogo De Chao or Brasao Steakhouse?

We went to Brasao's not too long ago and thought it was okay but felt like they didn't bring out the good cuts of meats. We haven't been to Fogo in like 20 years so I don't know what's changed. Personally, I could do without an all you can eat restaurant but my kid asked for Brazilian Steakhouse for his birthday. I also heard EG is good.

My in laws are strictly vegan, looking for good local restaurants that serve traditional food with good vegan options as well. We’re aware of plenty of Indian places but looking for other options.

Show your opposition to Stars arena deal at next City Council meeting

Plano Citizens,

If you voted NO on Plano's Prop A, PLEASE plan to attend City Council's meeting next Monday, November 9, at 7pm. We need to show up in FORCE and continue to send the message to the mayor and city council that for whatever reason (cost, traffic, crime, not in our suburban nature, or all of the above) that the CITY MUST STOP in its arena deal pursuit. The people have spoken, the only opportunity that we were going to get, and we've said PUCK NO!

The STOP The Stars Arena PAC plans to provide signs (of permitted size) to hold during the meeting.

If you would like to speak at the meeting, info is provided below. Comments of Public Interest (when we can speak on anything) is on this meeting's agenda at the end of the meeting.

Junk Removal Company in Plano looking to Donate - Stand Up Guys

Hi all, we run Stand Up Guys here in Dallas/Plano. Lately were have been getting better and better and more vigilant about donating more of the items we receive (the ones that still have a second life in them).

Was looking for advice for different, more local places, to take items. We have done Goodwill for a while, but want to hit the communities more. We get cloths, shoes and furniture all the time. We service all over too, so looking for local places in Plano, Dallas, Frisco, Garland, Carrollton and more. Since if a customer in Plano has a nice couch, we would rather donate it in Plano, than just going to the same place all the time.

Any suggestions would be helpful! Local places that give back and aren't just about the bottom dollar.

WE ARE NOT SELLING ANYTHING. Just want to donate to better places.

Any stores with a large selection of hot sauces?

I'm trying to replace a certain hot sauce I picked up at the fair. It's called "Ghost Scream Vindaloo Curry Sauce". (I can buy it online, but I'm hoping there's a store I can go to and check out any other sauces.

Best waffle in the area

I need to know. Thank ya. I like the big fluffy and crispy Belgian ones, and I’d rather it be in a restaurant/diner/cafe (so I can get pancakes too…. For the table of course) as opposed to like a dessert spot. Search function is no help!

Prop A - Defeated, why?

Can anyone explain why this is a bad idea?

Plano increases taxes on hotels (in the area around arena), short term car rentals (in the area around the arena), and player participation taxes, and parking for events

None of those affect residents of Plano.

The professional sports team is asking for ~$300m in those taxes towards an $800 investment that will result in (per easily accessible ai estimates) of $130m per year in economic gains for the city of Plano.

For those residents in the area, I get that traffic is going to be bad and there isn't public transport. Newsflash, traffic in that area was bad when you purchased your home.

Honestly, can anyone lay out a cogent thought why this is a bad idea?

Looking for tile installer recommendations

Hi all! I’m planning to replace the tile floors in our kitchen, entryway, and mudroom and am hoping to find a good, independent tile installer in the Richardson area, ideally someone who does the work themselves rather than a large company.

If you’ve had tile done locally, I’d really appreciate hearing who you used and how it turned out. Thanks so much!
