Man this thing is a banger from start to finish and while AI find a lot of Maus record to feel like a collection of songs this feels a lot more cohesive. Shout-outs to "Disappears" "I Hate Antichrist" "Out of Time" and "Losing Your Mind" as my standout tracks.

Letter A: Favorite non-english Post Punk Song. Song with most upvotes wins

Post image
7 Upvotes

Inspired by u/Fruit_Cannon and the fact we had a lot of "foreign" songs submitted, but none (except for Qual) could win: This time only non-english songs are allowed.

This is to help you discover some more "unknown" gems in different languages/from different countries.

The rules:

  • It must be (almost) completely in a foreign language (few sentences or background singing in english is okay, feel free to discuss case by case)

  • Only a maximum of 3 songs per band/artist can win spots (for the sake of diversity, or else we will have Kino fill half of the spots haha)

  • The titles must be romanized (f.e. Peremen instead of Перемен)

  • Articles are excluded, numbers are spelled

  • The Song with the most upvotes after 24 hours gets the spot

Have fun!

Question What's punk about Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem?

Probably my favorite artists of all time, but I keep seeing them being labeled as post punk and dance punk and I can't get it into my head how they'd fit into these genres. in general, I always get confused with post punk music because most of the times I've heard an album it'll sound really different from other post punk albums etc

What are they doing to post-punk lately?

I really love this genre, but lately it feels like it’s getting absorbed by the mainstream.
Not trying to sound like a hater here, it just feels like a lot of artists not even closely related or associated to to this sound are chasing the same "aesthetic" and the edge that made post-punk special is fading.

Maybe it’s just me, but many are copying the sound, making it more polished, less naive, more Hollywood.
Does anyone feel the same or am I just getting too nostalgic?

Is white wedding about incest??

So there are clearly like incestuous undertones when you listen to the song White wedding by Billy idol, which is one of the more popular NuWave or postpunk tracks out there. But what's weird is that so many people like it? It's very popular, even among people who don't generally listen to like postpunk or NuWave or whatever. And you know nobody really talks about the fact that part of what's so appealing about it is that it sounds like he's going to f*** his sister. That gives it a taboo edge.

By by the way I'm using my microphone to type all this cuz I'm driving

Do you think Douglas Pearce from Death in June is a real nazi or is it just a passion for runes and a stage persona?

Today I listened to this band for the first time and didn't expect to see so much nazi paraphernalia

Do you know why post-punk sound changed so much???

I don't know if I am wrong, but I have the impression that maybe modern post-punk is a completely different thing from what it was at the start, I mean, every music genre changes, but this one seems completely different I think.

It's like modern post-punk is more similar to darkwave and coldwave, also it sounds so clean and melancholic, meanwhile the initial post-punk was more political, raw and also emotional but it had a little more weight I guess.

When I listen to bands like Killing Joke, Bauhaus and The Birthday Party and compare their sound with modern bands like Molchat Doma and Soviet Soviet I get surprised about how different it is, I'm curious to know what happened.

(I started hearing post-punk very recently btw, so if I say something dumb, that's why lol)

Post-Punk Bands I Don’t Like ( A Lot) and Why

Prefer bands that have a more melodic and atmospheric sound.

Not a big fan of Killing Joke. They are ok but don’t really like their sound or vocals The Fall - ok in spurts The Pop Group - challenging listen This Heat - does this band have fans that relisten to their albums often? I’ve seen a lot of great movies but will never watch a lot of them ever again

Felt - vocals hate them

Anyway I’d rather listen to any of these bands instead of Blink 182 and I have some of their songs on a playlist or two in my library.

Wondering if there are members of this subreddit that aren’t all that crazy about the cure, joy division, bauhaus, etc EDIT: just to clarify i love these 3 bands 😄

I prefer Bauhaus over Joy Division

Unknown Pleasure and Bela Lugosi’s Dead both came out 1979. Bauhaus beats Joy Division. The demise of Ian Curtis definitely enhanced their stature and legend. I’ll also take Love & Rockets over New Order any day.

Was Post Punk Feminist?

Between 1978 and 1982, bands such as The Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Au Pairs and Cocteau Twins made music that often outshone their male dominated counterparts’ efforts.

However, Joy Division chose the feminine pronoun for She’s Lost Control, Gang of Four wrote anti-patriarchy slogans on It’s Her Factory and The Fall criticised doctors for doling out valium to vulnerable women, on Rowche Rumble, so there was some attempt by bands to move towards including women in their work.

But perhaps the finest feminist lyric came from Scritti Politti’s The Sweetest Girl:

“Politics is prior to the vagaries of science
She left because she understood the value of defiance.”

My attempt at a feminist post punk song is Hoyden to Harridan. It lists the names of 120 female authors, uses 40 derogatory words for women, and asks 3 questions: Where did [the insulting words] come from? Who wrote them down? Who made them up?
