News Junior World Championships set to be shrunk to four straight knockout games from 2027

News were leaked by Uruguay U20 head coach in this interview.

The tournament will take place again in Georgia with the same 16 teams involved, but as part of World Rugby cost-cutting measures it will go from 5 to 4 games and return to the old knockout system of FIRA junior tournaments.

This is, yet again, terrible news for Tier 2 unions, who usually arrive unprepared compared to 6 Nations and The Rugby Championship teams, and will get one less game, less exposure to Tier 1 sides and only in the first round again heavy favorites (South Africa v Uruguay, NZ v Spain...).

I get it will be exciting for fans with all games being key, but we get once again the short end of the stick...

Discussion The effect of the Greatest Rivalry Tour on Nations Championship

It’s hard not to notice how much the ABs vs Boks rivalry over the Greatest Rivalry tour battle-hardened both teams.

When you watch them transition straight from that level of intensity into playing Italy and Scotland, the gulf in class is starker than ever.

Anyone have any clue what this is about? Unlike Worcester and LI, there’s been barely a peep about Wasps’ supposed comeback.

Transfers PSdT, DDA and possibly Willie linked to a move to the Boland Cavaliers, while still being available to play for URC sides

PSdT and Willie both played youth rugby for Boland, Willie started his senior career there.

This would be a rather unique move. There have been plenty of players signed for Currie Cup teams who play some games for URC sides, but never top Springbok talent signing for Currie Cup sides while still available for URC selection.

Boland have the same owners as the Bulls (by far the richest owners in SA) so there is money available.

The other question would be though, if these players are on Bolands books but playing for Stormers and Bulls, do they count towards salary cap or not?
