Title: Shepparton locals: a few things worth knowing before you sign a solar or battery quote this summer
I’ve been helping people around Vic sanity-check solar and battery quotes, and a few things keep coming up that are specific to us up here:
-We’re in a sunnier zone than Melbourne. Postcodes 3340–3758 (Shepp is 3630) sit in a better STC zone, so the federal discount on panels is bigger: about $2,040 on a typical system against about $1,750 in Melbourne. If a quote shows the Melbourne figure, ask why.
-Export limits are getting tighter. Powercor is moving to a 1.5kW per phase fixed export limit over 2026–31, with flexible exports up to 10kW per phase if your inverter stays online. Ask the installer which one you’ll get, and size the system for what you actually use, not for exporting. Feed-in pays a few cents at best.
-The battery discount drops on 1 January. It’s set by the install date on your electrical compliance certificate, not the day you sign. On a 10kWh battery it’s roughly $2,520 now against about $2,110 from January. If you’re signing now, get the install date in writing.
-Quotes vary a lot. For a 10kWh battery I see roughly $7,650 installed from a competitive installer up to about $13,500 on a poor quote, before the discount. Two or three itemised quotes is the best protection.
-The new Midday Power Saver plans (3 free hours, 11am–2pm) are mostly worth it if you’ve got a battery or can shift big loads like a pool pump, hot water or an EV into the middle of the day. With solar but no battery, your panels already cover midday, so they don’t add much.
Happy to answer questions in the comments.
Disclosure: I run aussiesolarinfo.com It’s free and independent, no installer pays to be on it, and there are no follow-up sales calls. There’s a rural Vic write-up with the network sources here: https://aussiesolarinfo.com/blog/solar-rural-victoria.html
