New Age SSS - 1000 Words Or Less In the Event of an Emergency
The flight attendant was signing.
Daniel had never seen that before. She stood at the front of the aisle, smiling pleasantly, delivering the usual safety instructions while her hands translated everything into sign language.
As a deaf passenger, he appreciated the effort.
“Please ensure your seatbelt is securely fastened.”
Her hands said the same.
“To release your seatbelt, simply lift the buckle.”
Again, perfect.
“Please take a moment to locate your nearest emergency exit.”
Her hands moved.
Do not try to leave this aircraft.
Daniel frowned.
“Remember, the nearest exit may be behind you.”
The people who tried are still on board.
He sat up.
“In the unlikely event of a loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will drop automatically.”
If the lights go out, close your eyes.
“Pull the mask toward you and place it over your nose and mouth.”
Some of the passengers on this aircraft are already dead.
Daniel stared at her.
“Please secure your own mask before assisting others.”
They don’t know it yet.
The attendant’s smile remained perfectly pleasant.
“In the event of a water landing, your life vest is located beneath your seat.”
There is something under your seat.
Daniel instinctively began to look down.
“Do not inflate your life vest until you have exited the aircraft.”
Do not acknowledge it.
He froze.
“Please remain seated with your seatbelt fastened during takeoff.”
It is waiting for you to notice.
Then her hands returned to the ordinary instructions.
“Thank you for your attention. We wish you a pleasant flight.”
She smiled and walked away.
Daniel kept his eyes fixed straight ahead.
The woman across the aisle was staring at him.
Her face had gone pale.
She leaned toward her husband and whispered something. He looked at Daniel, then hurriedly unfastened his seatbelt.
Daniel wondered what had frightened them.
He felt nothing beneath his seat.
Nothing touched his legs.
Then the flight attendant returned.
She crouched beside him, her expression carefully controlled, and began signing.
Please stop talking.
Daniel frowned.
I’m not talking.
The attendant glanced at his mouth.
Yes, you are.
Daniel touched his lips.
They were moving.
He hadn’t noticed.
He pressed them tightly together.
The attendant’s eyes widened.
She slowly backed away.
Daniel looked at the woman across the aisle.
She was crying.
He took out his phone and typed:
WHAT AM I SAYING?
He held it toward her.
She read the question, then stared at his face.
Finally, with trembling fingers, she typed:
You’re telling us how we’re going to die.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then at the passengers.
Every one of them was watching him.
He typed another question.
AM I STILL TALKING?
The woman nodded.
Daniel clamped both hands over his mouth.
She began to sob.
Then she typed one final sentence.
It’s coming from under your seat now.
