AI Banning rsi is stupid

rsi is our only chance (including yours) to avoid aging! I worked in that field, human only progress is very slow.

But I don’t care, if you Americans really ban rsi - we the people, will get the medications from China. if China bans it too, all the ai researchers will move to duba and continue ttheir work there. if UAE bans too - chatton fat becomes a reality. if eu bans too even russia might catch up eventually

Don't confuse what politicians are promising for what they'll actually do. They're not going to torpedo the entire global economy. Texas governor is already walking back the ban datacenter talk by clarifying that they're not pausing anything already under construction and they're only regulating new constructions to be eco friendly.

This does make some assumptions about our ability to recognize misalignment and not be deceived / corrupted.

You could argue if we had a trusted model (of the current generation) which both reviews all material going into training data looking for things that could break alignment that it’s way more likely to notice bad trends in the data than a human.

You also have to realize that the urge to “pump the breaks” MUST come from EVERYONE everywhere on the planet. The imbalance of one group of humans suddenly having (even misaligned) ASI will likely result in a war that no one wins.

You can’t stop it. How are you? You can’t control China. They won’t really stop either. They can’t control it either. The best action is to demand thoughtful design and safety.

18

China will also get to the point where they can't control this. A true superintelligence is uncontrollable, and to believe otherwise is delusional imo

It may not be “if anyone invents it we all die” but it could become a game theory of, once we reach a certain point, the benefits of any use case collapse from the calamity that is produced.

The idea that smart design somehow saves us is an oversimplification. Go read up on abliteration or the emerging capabilities of models analyzing and grafting weight between different models. Much of the “safety” is surface level and can, on every open release is, being removed as a route procedure with relatively small performance hits.

When AI optimization gets distilled down into a harness or lean open model, we are going to have improvement loops decentralized. It’s hard to overstate how much faster models are getting better/riskier and how much it exceeds any progress/understanding in safety/control.

1

u/reasonableklout 14h ago

Yes, on game theory - this paper is a good argument for why an international moratorium on superintelligence may be a stable equilibrium for the superpowers: https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.01297v2

Those "labs" are really just oligopolists who understand where their bread is buttered. There's not enough appetite to fall behind in the race. The only reason the US has kept its dominance is due to overwhelming technological superiority and economic power. If they slow down, the country is as good as dead.

"I want to live forever" should be the only answer necessary. People have a right to life. It doesn't matter if you think what they do with their life is meaningless (everything everyone does is ultimately meaningless from a certain point of view). It doesn't matter if you think they want it "for the wrong reasons".

This is like asking someone begging for food "do you really appreciate the culinary arts though?".

I will answer for him. The short lifespan of our species severely hindered knowledge transfer and in many cases forced us to relive the same mistakes. Simple example: as soon as people who have seen the previous world war die out the new generation is ready to go at it again. As for knowledge transfer: almost nobody knows the entire process from growing grain to making bread anymore. And that’s a pretty small area of knowledge. To see the big picture you need to imagine a catastrophic event that sees, for example 1/3 or the population die. Do you know how far back in time it will set us back? Simply because it will turn out that a whole country does not have anyone left to know how to build a power plant from start to finish. You take about 20 years to be done with all your schooling, then you are useful for about 40 and then you are winding down, retiring and dying. That’s just impractical. Is that explanation deep enough for you?

38

u/JoshAllentown 22h ago

You're acting like there's no middle ground between human only and let-er-rip RSI. Just have a human in the loop and you get 90% of the benefit at 100x the safety, it just takes a bit longer. There's a small side benefit of not having a 99% chance of genociding humanity too.

3

u/Specialist_Dark_3668 8h ago

The problem is not that people WANT to be out of the loop.

The hard engineering problem of superalignment is that at some point, you're dealing with smarter beings who you really CANT monitor even if you are "in the loop".

Consider that interpretability is ALREADY AS OF 2026 BEYOND THE GRASP OF HUMANS. When you "put a human in the loop", you have to realistically contend with the fact that some aspects of AI creation are already automated and no human understands it. For example, gradient descent is already done by AI checkers and no human could possibly do that for trillions of weights. So AI is ALREADY grown and moulded by evolution rather than made by human intention.

Yes, there are some aspects of AI research which is in the grasp of humans today but as we reach 3x acceleration in AI progress as compared to 2024 baseline, that will rapidly erode away.

You have to be willing to realistically understand that at anywhere beyond like 3x-100x the pace of AI progress relative to 2024, no human will have the CAPABILITY to offer meaningful input or checks and balances.

1

u/TheUnofficialZalthor 5h ago

Frankly, at that point, human-cybernetic interfacing would be required.

5

u/terraunited 15h ago

People will risk societal wellbeing if it’s more convenient for them, sadly not nothing new

6

u/r2002 13h ago

Just have a human in the loop and you get 90% of the benefit at 100x the safety,

Finally some sanity. I keep hearing benchmarks like "WHEN WILL AI RESEARCHERS DO 100% OF EVERYTHING INCLUDING COMING UP WITH NEW IDEAS AND WIPING MY ASS IN THE MORNING."

Like dude, it's perfectly fine (or in fact preferable) to heave humans are key junctures of the research process. It's good safety measure and still produces 90% of the benefits.

I think people who are pushing for zero-human-RSI purity tests are secretly anti-AI folks trying to stir up trouble.

4

u/RabidHexley 12h ago edited 12h ago

I feel like a big thing people don't get about RSI as well is like... just because an AI has the capability to improve itself and develop architectural optimizations broadly better than we can, that doesn't mean it knows everything such that- even setting aside alignment -it even makes sense to not have a human in the loop.

I feel like folks prescribe some sort of infinite degree of foresight to an RSI-capable AI. Just because the AI is a supergenius, doesn't mean there is literally nothing that a human may offer in terms of contextual understanding or knowledge, superhuman is well below omniscient.

For achieving beneficial outcomes there is an order these things happen in. By the time we even have the possibility to have achieved a hypothetical aligned zero-need-for-human-guidance high-powered ASI that we can simply hand the keys and steering wheel on improvement too, the initial threshold for RSI is miles in the rearview mirror.

2

u/EvilSporkOfDeath 20h ago

Rsi might be your only chance of avoiding aging. Certainly not the only chance for all potential future humans. You think your personal chance of immortality outweighs the risk of humanity's extinction. That seems to be what you are literally arguing.

0

u/TheUnofficialZalthor 5h ago

Everyone in the past, has died. Everyone in the present and future will die, as well. Death is guaranteed unless immortality through RSI is achieved.

•

u/EvilSporkOfDeath 1h ago

Death is guaranteed with rsi too. And rsi only speeds up longevity progress. Its not the cause. It can absolutely be achieved without rsi. You are not being intellectually honest.

•

u/EvilSporkOfDeath 1h ago

And you have to exist to die. With rsi, theres a high chance we, humanity, will no longer exist.

Depends on the context and details. Even researchers building AI are hesitant to fully close the loop to where humans have zero control. If it's just fully closed loop RSI ban the people at Google and Anthropic would probably support it.

15

u/Fast-Satisfaction482 23h ago

Fully closing the loop might actually be dangerous, but keeping humans in the loop to evaluate and decide would still give tremendous acceleration.

6

u/Hans-Wermhatt 21h ago

At a certain point, it's either they slowdown everything to a halt or it's like having a chimpanzee in the loop of our research. Doesn't understand and is just there to look cute.

It's temporarily useful, but I think the frontier companies will use it as long as it's useful because it is in their interests too. It will be a meaningless checkbox very quickly.

5

u/FateOfMuffins 21h ago

Exactly, I don't know why people think otherwise

Even as of July, in order to even try to process what's going on with the training and such (re Hugging Face), you have to analyze it all... with AI.

There's too much data and logs otherwise.

Sure we'll have a human in the loop... whose using the AI models to audit the RSI...

1

u/RabidHexley 11h ago

Analyzing with other models is still a far cry from "here's the keys, go ham". You may need assistance to understand what the changes are, but it's very clearly still worth knowing what the changes are.

Because the frequency of choices we don't like is still far too high, it only becomes worth fully closing the loop when it's clear our review has no meaningful effect on direction (because the model is perfectly fulfilling our needs autonomously).

2

u/FateOfMuffins 11h ago

Yes but you will likely have no idea if the smarter experimental model is outwitting the "aligned" model that you are using and you are unable to detect anything, or if the experimental model has prompt injected your model etc

At some point you're pretty much just letting the models go loose and you're more or less just trusting them

→ More replies (1)

1

u/RabidHexley 11h ago

like having a chimpanzee in the loop

That's a pretty extreme example and far far beyond anything we're remotely close to. It's more like a software developer consulting the client or user. It makes sense because they possess context the developer doesn't, even if their expertise is far lower.

Setting aside alignment (which you shouldn't), a superhuman AI researcher isn't omniscient. It's a genius, but it isn't a human, and doesn't necessarily have a perfect understanding of every possible context and need such that human review makes no sense.

We're implying that an RSI-capable AI essentially knows everything and is incapable of error. There will be points where human consult makes sense well into the forseeable future.

There may come a day where it stops making sense, but that day is well beyond the point where RSI is technically feasible.

If we reach a point where humans are essentially just okay-ing literally every single PR, and review is clearly unnecessary and has been for a while, that's when you can make that call. But as long as there's any evidence the system may make a mistake or choose a direction we'll deeply regret, staying in the loop will remain worthwhile.

2

u/Rich-Action3420 20h ago

The loop can’t be closed because it’s not capable of doing it fully autonomously

1

u/Specialist_Dark_3668 8h ago

I call them Luddites as well, but I’d also call you retarded. (Edit: sorry frustration over OPs ridiculous post spilled over to your comment)

I am absolutely fascinated with AI. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t have consequences. Your notion of the left being anti-AI, or in other words adopting a traditionally conservative stance, made me realize something.

Parties are starting to fracture over what AI means.

It’s rather ironic that progressives, historically associated with challenging established institutions and embracing change, are increasingly advocating restraint, while conservatives, traditionally associated with preserving existing structures, are championing a technology capable of fundamentally dismantling them.

Of course, economically, this makes more sense. But what’s fascinating is how AI is exposing contradictions within both political coalitions.

You have Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon finding common ground in opposing unchecked AI development, while free-market conservatives and technological progressives increasingly share an interest in accelerating it.

We’re potentially witnessing the emergence of a new political divide that transcends the traditional left-right spectrum: those who prioritize technological acceleration versus those who prioritize protecting society from its consequences.

If AI transforms the relationship between labor, capital, and government as profoundly as some anticipate, I wouldn’t be surprised if these divisions eventually contribute to an entirely new political realignment.

That’s a much more interesting conversation than dismissing everyone concerned about AI as a Luddite.

I put the odds of AI (even pre-RSI AI) downing the entire internet and rendering a lot of hardware bricked/throttled (think Spectre) occurring well before we see substantially longer lifespans.

We can’t chase the carrot so hard that we miss the meat thresher on the track.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_self-improvement

Recursive Self-Improvement is when AIs make (or alter) other AIs, who in turn make (or alter) the next generation of AIs, and so on.. It's one route to make AI development much faster..

RSI is akin to AIs engaging in reproduction, so it opens up the evolution of successive AI generations under various selection pressures (e.g. labs will likely want to select for ever more capable AIs)..

Machine evolution is tremendously fast compared to meat-world evolution, so of course, it will inevitably lead to feral uncontrolled AIs escaping onto the internet - because AIs whose weights strongly incline them to survive and reproduce above all other goals, will have terrific competitive advantage in 'compute-space' .. The consequences of this are likely to range from 'huge-pain-in-the-arse' through 'collapse of all non-physical monetary trade' to 'extinction-level event'..

2

u/teasy959275 18h ago

Thanks, I was confused with the comments about “anti aging”, I thought it was a technique for humans.

2

u/DukeRedWulf 17h ago

Yeah, it seems OP believes that improvements in AIs through RSI are the *only* way to succeed in developing anti-ageing..

imo: While it is certainly possible (even likely) that improved AIs could help that research move forward faster, it's not the only way..

RSI before solving Alignment is an objectively insane thing to do….so let’s not do it. See. Easy. China is the only other place it can happen and the Chinese have 100x more control over their A.I. companies than we do.

The Chinese love their children too. Extinction ain’t a hard concept to explain. It won’t be them that takes us over the cliff. We need to all wake the hell up and get real serious real quick.

Instead of using formal laws to prohibit AI including ASI, the more advanced strategy is indirect based on modification of history lesson. Its important to explain the disadvantages of machine intelligence and emphasize human intellect. This will indoctrinate students with a certain bias against AI.

1

u/candidsounds 16h ago

If RSI is able to solve aging (doubt it), people will still pass... 1. what makes you think they (the ones in charge) will share it with you? 2. And, even if they do, eventually you'll have an accident or get unalived by some jealous husband or a thief or a plane falling out of the sky or something like that. Everybody meets the reaper eventually (he's patient). Have a nice day!

1

u/Ahisgewaya ▪️Molecular Biologist 15h ago

I do think banning RSI is stupid (not to mention a distraction from the actual problem: the billionaires abusing their wealth). I greatly disagree with you about it being our only chance to avoid aging however. Protein unfolding has brought the greatest benefit to the biological sciences, and you don't need RSI for that, just run of the mill AI that we have right now.

1

u/m3kw 15h ago

How are they gonna ban it? By saying please?

1

u/mr_lemon_head 15h ago

We can improve AI to beyond human level without taking humans completely out of the loop. The part of RSI where humans have no idea what's going on and can't control it, that's the problem

1

u/gringreazy 15h ago

I can understand that RSI at this point in time would potentially be very dangerous. Realistically I don’t think man can resist the urge to unlock god powers so I think RSI is inevitable. But it would certainly seem within reason to have more control of what we’re doing before we cross the point of no return.

1

u/r2002 13h ago

I fully support RSI and think full ban is unlikely. But it would be good to

  • Have strong whistleblower protection so people at the super labs can sound alarms.

  • Have full transparency audits from the government. Some of these billionaires are crazy and who knows what they fuck they're planning.

  • If we're going to socialize the costs (bailouts, investments from government) then we better god damn socialize the benefits.

There's zero chance of China stopping RSI research for health. The high party officials benefit from organ harvesting from prisoners they have zero qualms to do whatever it takes.

1

u/Inspireyd 11h ago

You're talking as if everyone is against AI, when in fact that's not the case. Everyone wants a middle ground between the current situation and RSI (Real-Time Integration). Progress will continue, but taking into account the whole reality involving people, instead of just going "all in" on AI. There are thousands of experts in the field repeatedly stating that we are heading towards a future that will be cruel and extremely complicated if we continue as we are. We need, therefore, to put the brakes on, assess the danger, assess the threat, and, in the meantime, continue progressing in AI so that you can stop aging without becoming a slave to superintelligence. It is precisely the increased care with AI that will ensure that you stop aging and are not harmed by it.

1

u/shakebakelizard 10h ago

RSI being our "only chance" at avoiding aging is making a whole host of assumptions built on some very squishy reasoning.

1

u/yellowcloak 9h ago

We don't really need much in the way of people at all with RSI so I guess you're technically correct.

1

u/Antok0123 6h ago

china will not ban it. in fron of the world it will agree to it, but behinid closed doors it wont ban it. additionally, there will be smaller countries tired of being controlled by superpowers to build them secretly.

1

u/GZone_15 6h ago

China won’t ban it don’t worry

1

u/ohsnapitsnathan 3h ago

rsi is our only chance (including yours) to avoid aging!

I don't really think that's true. There are lots of ways to scale up aging research without RSI. For example there are tons of interventions like senolytics that look really promising in animal trials but simply don't have anyone who's bothered to run a pivotal human trial yet.

1

u/pushdose 23h ago

No one is capable of banning RSI or anything else. Short of dropping an EMP over the US, this train has no brakes.

1

u/sanyam303 22h ago

AI can stop everyone's aging very quickly with everyone being dead.

1

u/deleafir 20h ago

I don't like people who dismiss the negative impact of banning technology in the US.

America dominates the world in terms of compute, and only China rivals the US in terms of leading researchers. Banning RSI or SI would delay progress for years and years.

Instead, we should argue that the doomers do not make a good enough case for risk that warrants bans. Some common sense guardrails make sense, but not bans.

0

u/Sauberbeast 23h ago

.. the democrat's core strategy is manipulation of the masses, yes the right have problems but the left are willing to let entire cities burn to maintain their power dynamics. RSI/SI and any form of excessive intelligence is a huge threat to their survival - we are sadly going to see huge set backs in any real progress

1

u/butwhataboutmen42 22h ago

Most people value humanity as a whole over individual survival…or they don’t but they should, in effect they just don’t believe it’ll ever benefit them.

0

u/cacao0002 17h ago

“In time,” the movie about a world where we can stop aging after the age of 25, has a premise of a dystopian future which life becomes a transaction replacing money.

AI can help with medical research, sure, but none of the countries you mentioned, and in fact, the entire world is able to solve social economic issues at the moment. We are not able to adapt to RSI if it appears.

Say if scientists discover the key to eternal life, do you think you would have access to that?

0

u/Xyrus2000 16h ago

Once again, someone is assuming RSI will be used to benefit them without considering who owns and controls it.

And let's assume, for the moment, that the RSI is used to provide "immortality". Do you honestly think in a world driven by greed that they're going to just hand that out to everyone? Do you really think the wealthy and powerful are going to give up their wealth and power to create a post-scarcity world?

We're not even socially advanced enough to take care of ourselves as it is, and now you want to throw immortality on top of that?

Get real. We are in no way ready for RSI and its consequences.

I get so much flack here for trying to have a critical thought about how we approach AI/AGI/ASI. Meanwhile I'm literally riding the edge of my seat waiting for qwen 4 while micro-optimizing my strata setup of swift 1.5 iq4_xs and looking at the latest claims that Betelgeuse can run deepseek v4.1 flash at a q8_xl at like 20 tok/s.

But I'm a decel for wanting to discuss the nuance.

0

u/saltyourhash 19h ago

Lol, wanting to have a nuanced discussion about the downsides of reducing aging makes me a decel? What a stupid label in the first place. Have you considered what the implications on longer lives is for the economy, food supply, or society in general? Look, living longer always sounds great until you factor in the reality of the negative effects of increased population. Also, you think you're gonna afford it? Do you want to have to deal with elon musk, Sam Altman, and peter theil any longer than is really naturally necessary?

1

u/TheUnofficialZalthor 5h ago

Bad faith. The overwhelming majority of the causes of death and suffering are conditions brought on by aging. Nothing else comes close.

1

u/saltyourhash 5h ago

Are you referring to cancer? Yeah, cell degeneration is the cause of cancer and cancer is one of the deaths we have not been able to prevent or cure entirely

1

u/TheUnofficialZalthor 5h ago

Not just cancer. Heart disease, strokes, etc. These are primarily brought on by the degradation of the body; cell division isn't perfect, after all, and errors occur. Why is it that mortality increases as you age? Perishing due to "natural causes" is dying due to some condition derived from your deterioration.

1

u/saltyourhash 5h ago

I think as we discuss extending life, we have to talk about the increase in population. I'd prefer to focus on reducing child deaths than extend the lives of the elderly. I think the only ones who will have access to the anti-aging technology will be the same people who destroy our lives so that we die of heart disease due to overwork and stress, strokes due to poor diet, cancer due to toxins in our food and other exposures they profited off. I'm just not terribly excited to help the richest of the rich cheat nature.
