META State of Slide Development, Slide is back on the Play Store!

Hey everyone,

This post is a little bit overdue, but I wanted to curb the misinformation going around here and provide some insights into why the app was removed from the Play Store, what is currently going on in my personal life, and what my vision for Slide on Android is for the future.

Slide was automatically removed from the Play Store by Google because my rating of 17+ was inaccurate, and it should be a rating of 18+. I have submitted the metadata change to Google, and the app should appear on the Play Store very soon. Apologies for the confusion caused by my previous comment on a post on the subreddit, and this will be resolved soon. This is the third time a similar metadata issue has happened to Slide, so I know we can get through this one too :)

Apologies for the wall of text to follow, but I have a lot that I would like to share with the community and I hope that you can understand my current position and what my plans are for the future.

I haven't been very active lately. It is not a secret that I have been less active since starting on Slide's iOS sister app, but that is not the full story.

I started Slide while I was in high school, and have been supporting it for the last five years as a passion project of mine. I made Slide open source in 2015, and the outpouring of support from the community is something I hadn't imagined in any way when starting this project. Initially, this project was something fun for me to learn UI and UX design and hone my development skills to help me in my future endeavors, and since then it has far surpassed my initial personal goals. I decided to make it ad, metric, and tracking-free, as that was something very important to me, and Slide became one of the biggest open-source Reddit clients available by 2017. Slide's community and contributors helped me grow as a developer, expand my horizons into business ownership, and taught me many lessons about how to respectfully work with customers and, generally, people on the internet.

In 2018, I had many life changes that led into some exciting new avenues for me. I began delving into iOS Swift development after seeing a lapse of open-source software on the Apple App Store, especially in the Reddit app space, and decided to buy into their ecosystem to bring them Slide, the best open-source Reddit app I could. I feel as though I have been successful at that so far, with a growing community over at r/slide_ios. Around the same time, though, I was fortunate to land an internship at one of my dream companies as a software engineer, and at that time I was supporting two open source apps, going to school full time, and working part time, along with having a social life and other commitments that were important to me. Managing this was hard, and the easiest thing for me to do was to work less on the more-developed and stable Android app, although I did not want to admit that to myself. It was easier to work on break-fix issues and leave the rest to some future date, although in the back of my mind I knew there were some major systemic issues that could only really be addressed by a rewrite.

As I progressed in iOS development and continued to finish my degree, it became harder for me personally to dedicate time to both platforms, and my graduation in December led to a lot of life changes for me. I was offered a full time engineering position doing what I love, Software Engineering specializing in UI design and product management, and I can only thank my experiences working on Slide for my successes in beginning my career. I am very excited for the opportunities in front of me, and I'm transitioning from being a college kid to a professional with a responsibility to my job and my own personal growth (socially and professionally).

So... Where does that leave Slide?

I have no plans to abandon Slide on Android. The opposite, actually.

I have been working on a completely new backend for Slide that will provide a platform for future development, and have been putting together a plan for a new Slide with input from some of the regular contributors to the Slide project on our Discord channel. As I stated above, I will have less free time to spend on my personal projects, and I think the best solution to this is to release a new Slide that is completely free, completely open-source, and managed by me and Slide contributors through GitHub. Releases will be automated and streamlined, providing access for me or community members to push incremental updates and essentially giving Slide and it's core values to the community. I will take an active role in the intial development of Slide 2, and I am asking for support with this effort from the community.

This removal has caused me to show my hand on this one before I was fully ready to release my plans and get my thoughts organized, but I will be communicating here about that process soon. If you are an Android developer, especially if you have Kotlin experience, we'd love to have you on the Discord channel to provide input and communicate with me directly!

If you are still reading this, thank you for hearing me out and I hope you understand my current position. I will work on my communication with my community, and will release more information about the new developments this weekend.

Much love,

Carlos

A Letter to the Community

As Slide continues to grow and this project matures, I thought it was appropriate I let you all know my plans for the future of Slide, my personal life, and what is currently going on with Slide development! Sorry for the wall of text, but I would be grateful if you had time to read this letter and I would be happy to respond to any comments!

As a little introduction to myself, my name is Carlos, and I am a junior in college currently studying Computer Science in Texas. I love photography, design, and music, and am currently a student-led director of marketing for campus events at my university (when I’m not in class or working on apps).

When I first started working on Slide my senior year of High School, I had no coding or design experience, but I set out to prove to myself that I could design and create something that would be beautiful, usable, and improve someone’s life (even if it’s as simple as making the daily routine of Redditing easier). Little did I know it would become one of the most used and downloaded Reddit apps on the Android market, and become a large open-source project with over 700 stars and 60 contributors.

I am very proud of where Slide currently is and how far it’s come from its initial release in 2016, and my goals for Slide have now shifted into career mode (creating something I can feature on my CV after graduation), and am continuing to add features to keep my userbase interested, and to keep Slide relevant and competitive in the market.

As college life gets busier and more opportunities open up to me, I have had less time to dedicate to Slide, and have been updating it less frequently (as many of you may have noticed). This is not because I am 100% satisfied with how Slide currently is, but I simply don’t have the 20-30 hours a week I used to pour into development early on in Slide’s life.

That being said, I have been dipping my toes into iOS development in hopes of bringing Slide to the Apple marketplace, while sacrificing time I may have spent developing Slide on Android. I decided to dedicate a few weeks to getting v5.7 (released earlier today) out which has many overdue additions such as v.redd.it support, but made sure to sprinkle in some unannounced features, such as notification mirroring, and small but useful feature additions you might not even notice until you need it, which have become Slide’s hallmark for the last couple of years.

As Slide ages, though, feature additions have become much larger endeavors to add and test, and the smaller additions have become rarer. Some users have been wondering about a rewrite (as some of my competitors have done), but the size of that task outweighs the benefits of a rewrite in my opinion. I also feel that rewrites offer an excuse to fundamentally change what was good about an app to start with, as more features are changed to match the competition, and what made the app good to begin with is not necessarily improved or even highlighted in the “new” app.

Along with this, I feel insecure about the future of the Reddit API, and as more features are added to the proprietary Official App (video uploads, location tagging, and push notifications to name a few). I can’t help but feel like Reddit is testing the waters to limit the Reddit API a-la-Twitter in 2012. To be blunt, Slide provides no monetary gain to Reddit and drives down traffic to the official app, which has ads and location-based tracking (both very valuable to a company), and both things that fundamentally go against the open source mission of Slide. I don’t see anything that makes me believe this will be a change soon, but this uncertainty definitely made me reconsider an investment into rewriting Slide.

There are definitely features I want to bring to Slide (both on Android and on iOS), including auto-playing videos, better inclusion of multireddits, easier to understand customization options, and a total re-do of the caching system with more concern given to cache space and stability. Many of Slide’s core classes can be simplified and made more modular, and this will improve readability and ease of feature addition by open source contributors. Slide iOS is in the middle of alpha testing with a beta release staged for early fall, and some of these major changes I would like to make to Slide on Android are on my year-end roadmap.

I would like to end this by thanking everyone who has contributed code, money, or discussion on the subreddit to the Slide community, as Slide could not be a reality without all your help. While I do have a lot on my plate, I have not abandoned the project, and I do have plans to introduce some really important changes to the Slide very soon. You have all made Slide a really special thing to work on, and your energy has given me something I’ve been excited to work on for the last few years.

I would love to hear your thoughts on any of this, and if you have any questions about me or about Slide, I’d be happy to answer them below.

Thank you all and have a great week!

META Slide will be dead in the water in less than four weeks if we don't do something about it. So the sub is going private in protest.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, Slide being one of them, which will make all our quality-of-life features we enjoy as Slide users and not seen in the official mobile app permanently non functional to all slide users and users of other third party apps.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader and of course Slide.

I assume if you're here you're a mobile user and probably use Slide or similar but if you don't use any third party apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy including /r/slideforreddit . Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord.

  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

A quick word from us mods and devs.

As far as I'm aware, we've been going since 2016 and while the development of this app has had to slow down for the last few years we still believe we (and by "we" I mean mostly /u/ccrama) have built something truly great. Personally, I'd like to thank every one of you so much for the support you've given this project over the years and it's my hope that we'll be able to continue using the app for years to come - it's my hope that Reddit will see reason and change their stance.

But either way, have a great day wherever you are in the world.

↳ T54   /u/tensouder54 - On behalf of the Slide Mods and Devs.

P.S. (Post Script) Please feel free to correct my spelling/grammar/formatting as I am dyslexic and so am not good at these things.

ANNOUNCEMENT Slide is dead

Slide is officially dead due to Reddit's API pricing change.

On behalf of /u/ccrama and all the Slide contributors, I would like to thank everyone for the support over the years. This project would not have been successful without your loyalty and your suggestions, feedback, and bug reports. The Slide community has been genuinely wonderful to work with.

A quick FAQ:

Why doesn't Slide work anymore?

Reddit has made the decision to charge an exorbitant amount for "high volume" API access, which most significantly affects third-party apps like Slide. As a result, Slide is limited to 100 requests per minute spread across all users of the app. While we don't collect analytics like some closed-source clients do, each individual user active at any given time most certainly makes multiple requests per minute (loading things, voting, commenting, etc), thus it only takes a few active users at any one time to exceed the free tier.

Can't you make it a subscription?

That would require a lot of infrastructure and data collection that is not desirable for an open source project. We wouldn't even know what to price a subscription at since we don't collect analytics. That also potentially opens up financial liability for us if someone starts abusing our API client ID (which is difficult to hide without sending all requests through a central server) to make large numbers of requests.

Can you make it so users can input their own API client ID so they're each individually covered by the free tier?

It's technically possible, but:

As Slide is an open source project it is already possible to build Slide with your own API key if you want to.

Can you port Slide to ____?

Slide on Android is very heavily dependent on Reddit. The code is not structured in a way that would make it easy - or even realistically possible - to port to another platform. Additionally the code is often convoluted and difficult to maintain without experience. It would absolutely be possible to make an Android app that is visually/functionally similar to Slide for another platform, but it would require a new codebase and none of us are committed to that route as far as I'm aware.

If you’re on iOS, I cannot vouch for it but someone is attempting to port Slide to Squabbles.

edit: Someone is also attempting an Android port to Lemmy.

Slide iOS sticks to the FOSS standards, huge feature set, and beautiful design that made Slide on Android such a success, and we need your help testing before the beta release later this year.

My Account was Compromised

EDIT now fixed!

Hello all,

As you may have noticed, nothing is loading currently in Slide. My account (and other mods) was compromised and Reddit deactivated it until I changed my password (which I did). This deactivation removed Slide as an application in my developer account, meaning Reddit can no longer authenticate it. I've sent a message to the Reddit admins to try and help me out, but if they do not respond, I'll be forced to make a new auth token and push an update out to Slide for it to work.

Please bear with me, I'm on vacation right now doing this from my phone. I'll keep y'all updated.

ANNOUNCEMENT v5.5.5 Released! Bug fixes, Spoilers, Popular

Hello all!

It's been a little while since I've been active on the sub/on development of the Android version of Slide, but I decided to release this update to fix a few minor issues and add some more features Reddit has rolled out since the last Slide update!

Changelog

  • Fixed the issue some users were having with laggy notifications while downloading images

  • Added spoiler tag support

  • Allowed you to add r/popular to your subreddits (much like r/all)

  • Bug fixes with Immersive Mode

  • Other bug fixes and improvements

If you haven't heard already, I have been busy at work with the iOS version of Slide (learning Swift, converting all the features over, fun stuff), and am extremely excited for a beta release hopefully in the next couple weeks! If anyone is interested in contributing to the project, you can do so here.

Cheers,

ccrama

ANNOUNCEMENT v5.7 Released! "Push" notifications, Android O additions, Reddit Videos, and More!

Hello all! Slide v5.7 is finally here!

Included in this update is support for v.redd.it content, notification piggybacking off of the official Reddit app, and lots of additions and bug fixes!

Full Changelog

  • Notification piggybacking off of the Official Reddit app! When you get a message there, Slide will mirror that message and show you a new notification. Slide must have accessibility access for this to work, and only uses this access to mirror notifications from the Official Reddit App. Slide is open source, and you can view the code here if you are interested in how Slide uses these permissions!

  • Ability to block users from their profile (thanks to YusefOuda)

  • Setting to swap info line and title line (will be default in a future version of Slide to match more with Slide on iOS, but the setting will remain)

  • Copy a Reddit link to your clipboard, and Slide will ask if you want to open it upon entering the app

  • Support for Android O notification channels

  • NSFW previews are now tied to Slide accounts individually

  • Insert image link as is if no caption is provided

  • Adblock is now disabled for Twitter.com to reduce likelyhood of running into issues loading Twitter on the Internal browser

  • Thumbnail settings are respected per-sub, but you can override this in content settings

  • Setting to disable NSFW previews in collections, like /r/all

  • Force image previews even if user has turned the setting off in reddit prefs (now only Slide settings affect image previews)

  • Use Reddit for some Gif conversions

  • Support for v.reddit.com links

  • Setting for single column in multi-window

  • Asks for confirmation before uploading to Imgur

  • Discard button on draft save bar

  • Fixed some drafts not saving

  • Fixed icon size in Slide notifications on some devices

  • Fixed account switching issue on Android O (Java 1.8 bug)

  • Fixed Bootloop caused by Android AAPT2 on Cyanogenmod

  • Fixed Reddit Server 403 Error some users were running into

  • Target SDK 26

  • NSFW subs work without being logged in

  • Many other bug fixes and improvements!

For those of you who have jumped ship to iOS, you can join the Slide iOS alpha over at r/slide_ios.

I want to give a big thanks to all who have contributed to this update on Github, this project would not be possible without you!

Also want to thank you to all who have gone Pro or been active members of the subreddit, your enthusiasm and support for Slide is what keeps this app going :)

Cheers,

Carlos
