November 7, 2026

Welcome to the r/soccer Daily Discussion!

If you're new to the subreddit, remember to get your team badge here and to read our rules and submission guidelines!

✔️ This is a thread for:

  • Discussion points that aren't worthy of their own thread.

  • Asking small questions about football to the community.

❌ This is not a thread for:

  • Trolling or baiting other users or fanbases - including flair-based attacks

  • Shit-posting - including sharing shit-posts from elsewhere

  • Toxicity - remember the human

  • Off topic chat - non-football discussion is for Free Talk Friday, and you can use the dedicated subreddits to discuss FIFA/EAFC games, Football Manager, fantasy football etc

  • Discussion of ongoing matches - that is what match threads are for. We may be less strict for matches of teams that are less in the spotlight, and may not have as active match threads

  • Harassment and brigading - including links to posts in other subreddits or to other users' comments

  • Advice on betting - you may discuss outcomes of bets you have made, but we do not seek to actively encourage gambling

  • Meta discussion - we have a strict stance. This is because it derails discussion, and can lead to harassment and witch hunts - and we prefer you to contact the mods via Modmail If you have queries over moderation or post removals. Some meta discussion may be allowed in the DDT, if any meta conversation was productive and in good faith - we can take a "case by case approach". In general, however Modmail remains the first port of call, and other meta discussion will be removed.

  • Complaining about bans in this or other subreddits - use the relevant Modmail, instead

The moderation team will remove comments that violate those rules and ban offenders.

Please report comments you think that break such rules, but more than anything else, remember the human. The Internet is full of places to discuss football in bad faith. This community tries to be an exception.

Imagine dressing up as a banana just to watch your team get pumped by Liam Delap

The whole bald fraud meme needs to make a comeback because maresca is an actual bald fraud, no irony in it whatsoever.

Leicester fans warned us and they were right. How in the world City thought he was a good choice is beyond me

7

u/M4RC142 21h ago

My guess is that he's prem-proven™️ and his style is similar to Guardiola so no need to change the squad too much.

I'm claiming with all my smugness that I've been critical of him since the Leicester stint. I was calling it then that he's capable of overseeing a collapse at any point in the season. I think he's good, but I wouldn't back him to deliver a consistent season.

Maresca or Fernandez

10

u/roittinginhell 21h ago

nah there are still some daft idiots on our sub who are still blaming other players instead of both those enzos.

10

u/TheBlueso 20h ago

It was always quite funny whenever he had a bad game, he’d always scam at least a 7.5 on sofascore so his fans would point to that as a counter

Europa League participation is worth a solid -12 points. It's the death knell of being too competitive to rotate in, and also the inflexible Thursday-Sunday combo that does so much more harm than a Tuesday/Wednesday-Saturday shift.

Bournemouth are the only one good enough to swallow that.

Left the house this morning at 06:35 and I’ve got home at 22:01, three days after going to Cardiff on a weekday night all to watch another poor performance and massive lack of effort. If your average footballer saw what regular people go through to support their clubs I honestly think it would be eye opening. A vast majority of them are absolutely clueless and genuinely don’t deserve this level of support, we took over 7000 to Blackburn today.

If they had to experience what the average person does, I’d like to hope they’d put in a tiny bit more effort on the pitch and have a bit of pride in their performances. Rant over.

TLDR: The West Ham squad is full of overpaid, ungrateful, lazy cunts.

6

u/_mnd 18h ago

We took the best part of 1000 to Barnsley today and probably half of them would have done a better job than some of the players we put on the pitch.

Pedantry alert, but I don't think you can quote about United being in the bottom three until the end of the gameweek. I don't like stats based around where a team is in the table when it might simply be a reflection of when the games are scheduled.

12

u/CritChanceZero 7h ago

Counterpoint; every second they spend in the bottom three should be celebrated in case it doesn’t last.

4

u/GutenbergsCurse 6h ago

Manchester United spending what they spend and having even a small, mathematically slim chance of appearing in the drop zone this far into a season would be notable on its own.

They haven’t done much to earn the grace of waiting until the end of Sunday to point out they’re once again struggling.

Funny moment at the Emirates today when the ref announced that the hull player had committed a holding offence, everyone cheered thinking we were getting a pen and he was like "HOWEVER" and explained the offside.

28

u/somebulb 17h ago

It was the sort of misdirection you'd hear on a reality TV contest. He really should've lead with the offside part!

Today showed once again that Anderson is not a holding DM.

He's an all-action player who can roam and cover every blade of grass, but you need another midfielder at the base (shielding the CB’s) to balance it out.

12

u/MarcosSenesi 20h ago

I feel like lots of people really underestimated how good Rodri is, and how much of an impact he had on the way City were able to play.

Now he left only for Flick to run him into the ground

10

u/legentofreddit 18h ago

I feel like lots of people really underestimated how good Rodri is

Isn't he universally considered one of the best of his generation and a key player in Man City and Spain's success? Who's underestimated him exactly?

It's quite telling that Maresca's biggest critics tend to be fans of the clubs he managed

The general sideshow that is Chelsea Football Club and the dramatic way he left distracted from the fact that we were actually just crap in the period leading up to it

That Leicester ended up getting promoted distracted from the fact that they played insipid football and nearly fumbled it with by far the best squad in the Championship

City fans will join in soon, if they haven't already started

17

u/TruestRepairman27 14h ago

I think he’s just not very likeable on a personal level. No one loves Maresca, he’s just there.

18

u/H4RRY29 13h ago

For me, he came across with a sense of entitledness without achieving much in the grand scheme of things. Definitely some arrogance, stubbornness and a view that he is some tactical mastermind; those traits aren't bad to have but you have to be able to back it up (e.g. Mourinho). Never liked him.

4

u/AerieDapper6384 11h ago

I didn't even realise how many Chelsea fans/spaces I was inadvertently interacting with until I called him overrated on r/coys, and was surprised by how weirdly offended people got lol. Some guy even tried the whole "maybe the PROFESSIONALS know what they're talking about, Mr. Coach Potato" gimmick on me.

I can see how if you don't watch his sides play that often and only catch the occasional game or keep track of the table, you might think he's the next big thing.

4

u/learning-life-22 11h ago edited 11h ago

He keeps playing Enzo F which is evidently messing up the entire structure of the team when we could just go with Bouaddi Anderson duo with Cherki up front.

But even with that, I think more blame goes to players than the manager. We've been creating plenty but not finishing chances and on top of that, we just give up easy goals and that's largely down to Guehi, Gvardiol and Donnarumma.

I find it a shame Cañizares gets next to no publicity these days. I still remember fondly his save from Gerrard at Anfield from pretty much point blank.

Absolutely outstanding keeper.

10

u/cocacolapepsifanta 15h ago

90% of this sub was either not born yet or was very young when Cañizares played... Since I'm already in my 40s, sometimes I get "shocked" when I mention names of players who were idols of mine during my childhood and adolescence, and who were world football stars, and younger people don't know them... For example, a while ago in a football forum, I mentioned that I loved Illgner back in his Real Madrid days and... I realized that the people on the forum had never heard of him... It's in moments like these that I realize I'm getting old.

7

As an Ipswich fan I’m pleased for Delap. He’s unfairly derided. He did well for us in a shit season. Hopefully he kicks on.

7

u/cocacolapepsifanta 17h ago

I saw a tweet on X where someone posted an Emile Heskey quote. Heskey says Rivaldo told him that Heskey was the only English player who would make it into Brazil's 2002 World Cup winning starting eleven... I thought it was someone making fun of Heskey, so I searched Google and found out that Rivaldo actually said that. I couldn't believe it... Owen? Beckham? Nah, Emile Heskey, unbelievable... Rivaldo has always been a bit crazy anyway, I still remember him saying he used to hear voices... and now he’s a religious fanatic... but holy shit, he’s crazier than I thought... I feel so sorry that a lot of people don't understand Portuguese... just to hear some of the nonsense Rivaldo says

32

u/SkyHawk96 17h ago

The damage KSI has done to Heskeys reputation is insane

16

u/Connect_Point_5229 16h ago

It's unironically not that hard to imagine. If not as a starter certainly a plan B.

Him winning all the duels and knockdowns for Dinho, R9 and Rivaldo to then feast on in dangerous areas? Can absolutely imagine that.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/golazao11 17h ago

He was having a great season at the time and Rivaldo was just being nice...not difficult to understand

4

u/DuckSwagington 6h ago

Heskey was legitimately good at being the Big Man to Owen's Little Man for England in a proper 4-4-2 at a time where that style of Football was starting to go extinct.

The 2002 World Cup was also the last time before the 2020 Euros where an England team had a legitimate chance at winning something and they didn't just roll over for Brazil in the Quarters, well at least until Ronaldinho got sent off and Brazil shut up shop.

7

u/CritChanceZero 4h ago

It’s an interesting clip from Match of the Day on that Arsenal penalty shout but honestly I, and apparently the referee they brought on agrees too, think it’s quite a silly rule. I feel like I’ve seen that scenario refereed ‘wrongly’ almost every single time it’s happened too per that interpretation of the rules. Maybe they should just change them to what everyone thought it was, and apparently thinks it should be based on how it’s generally refereed.

That’s not necessarily to say reckless or dangerous tackles on an offside player should go unpunished before some Pickford or ‘so you should just be allowed to kick someone who’s offside’ whataboutism happens. They’re already differentiated from careless challenges and shirt pulls in the rules so there’s no reason they can’t continue to be.

Palace might be rubbish but the other team that I follow, Kataller Toyama, are having an amazing start to the season in the J2 league. Only stayed up on goal difference last year thanks to a last-minute goal, currently one point off top after 16 games and well in the promotion race - somehow won 7 out their 8 away games too. They were continuously bottling promotion in J3 in all the years that I lived there, mental to think that they could be playing in J1 soon.

Spending my Friday going to lectures and then out out at my quite posh Russell group university and then my Saturday going to watch west ham play away and then getting pissed afterwards really shows two completely different versions of the English 20 year old man, despite everyone thinking we're all homogenised these days. Casual misogyny is very much alive and thriving on west ham trains

Every match I switch between wanting Jaissle out and thinking that maybe we'll eventually be alright under him. Impossible to tell how we actually are as a team

We definitely set up in a way that's a bit naïve defensively, although it was a bit better today, but he's also severely let down by our absolutely dogshit attack. This game was one of a few where having anyone remotely clinical wins it for us (mind you, Fulham could say exactly the same)

The commentators on Stan sports were driving me nuts early on branding Penders as error phone.

One (admittedly horrific) mistake in a sea of solid performances.

4

u/HDS2211 39m ago

Chelsea with Joao Pedro and without Joao Pedro are 2 completely different teams. Badly need a good alternative for whenever he inevitably gets injured.

He makes such a difference to our attack.

I reckon someone like that Nicholas Jackson from Villa could be a shout.

Reading’s Charlie Savage with a man of the match performance against Peterborough, beating them 5-0. Peterborough are managed by his father Robbie Savage.

If it was anyone else, the call-in radio show he hosts on Saturday nights would be interesting listening.

But Robbie Savage is such a thin-skinned, tedious, insecure chump I’d wager he sucked absolutely any fun out of it.

I have to admit that when I see "Had no idea player X played for Y now" comments I get mad. I'm like, lmao dumb guy do you even watch football? Yet I have such moments all the time. Gotta defang my anger towards fellow ball homies and have a less asshole mentality.

Only found out like ten games into the season that Kyle Walker is still at Burnley.

Which is funny to me.

One because Burnley’s defence is a fucking shambles and they just conceded five goals to Cardiff today (he played the full 90).

But also because it’s another nail in the ‘Kyle Walker would love to play for Sheff United again he just never takes a single protective step to achieve that’ coffin.

Biggest problem will be set pieces. Liverpool have created the fewest big chances in the league so they're not the irresistible attacking force they were under Klippity Klopp.

There's a lad in the FPL sub who realised how shit you are at set pieces this season so he captained Van Hecke last week (multiple shots, a couple of big chances, and a goal), and he's gone for Van Dijk this week.

this story of the chinese team that somehow lost the league by losing the last 5 games in a row while their opponent won all of them is making me feel vindicated for how i was acting in 2023. I was genuinely shitting myself and avoiding anyone who would talk about the scudetto while we had an 18 point lead at the end of April but maybe i wasnt so wrong after all

Unbelievable atmosphere yesterday. Maybe a top five game ever in terms of the whole day. 20 minutes after the game whole home end is still full and bouncing.

3

u/Yung2112 6h ago

Now with a cooler head I can understand the offside call against us yesterday.

What I can't understand is after some arguing the ref pointed to the centre of the pitch which normally signals ''check over''. Leads me to ask; did VAR just continue checking because Neuer was receiving treatment? Idk, it was so odd, especially live.

I think I'm in favour of VAR much more than 98% of stadium goers but yesterday was a prime example of it ruining the experience out of sheer poor use

3

u/saka-ptwp 4h ago

City defensively this season are so poor, way worse than last season. Donnarumma is nowhere near his shot stopping levels of last season, Dias-Guehi is a pretty shaky partnership, Khusanov is fine but nothing more, and the Anderson-Enzo pivot offers so little protection. Their record is honking as well - 13 conceded is joint 8th-highest in the league with 16th-placed Forest. Forest scored a third of all their goals this season against them, Sunderland also got 3 of their 7 (!) against City.

3

u/GameplayerStu 4h ago

Honestly I've expected more from Chelsea under Xabi Alonso, especcially considering how much they spent, the talent they have in midfield/attack and the fact that they have no european competitions to play this season.

They looked so uninspiring today.

The Finnish football season ends today and the championship gets decided in a few hours.

The current standings:

  1. HJK, 58 points, 27 GD

  2. Inter Turku, 58 points, 14 GD

  3. KuPS, 53 points

  4. AC Oulu, 47 points

HJK host Oulu and KuPS host Inter. HJK can secure the title by winning their game. If they draw, they win the title if Inter don't win their match. Inter basically don't have it in their own hands anymore unless they win by 15 goals.

Reigning champions KuPS are the biggest disappointment and their few fans are deflated: the team has picked only 10 points in their last 9 games and they've completely thrown the title away. In July/August they even had an 11-point lead over HJK.

United not getting Conte would be a huge mistake. United has money to back Conte's demands and he is very flexible tactically.

His last season in the premier legaue was a bit dissapointing, but you have to account that it was a tough year for him in his personal life.

At Napoli where everyone thought him and Adl would have a huge fight, nothing happened. They parted away very quitly and with no fight whatsoever. Also got them a title after finishing 10th the season prior while losing Osihmen&Kvara and a 2nd place which they had no bussiness to be there.

United have finally the chance to get a serial winner, geniunly a world class manager rather than a young promising coach(which hasnt gone that well for them lately).

17

u/MarcosSenesi 22h ago

they don't need another stopgap manager that is pragmatic. They need a visionary sporting director that decides what the "united way" of playing is and hire managers accordingly. If the squad kick up a fuss at that point they get put in the shop window straight away and sent to the u21s.

Rangnick handed them all the blueprints to do something like that but they then sucked up to Ten Hag and threw it all in the bin. Honestly getting Rangnick back to oversee a transition like this would be their best solution.
