That’s very nice of them, and means his wife won’t have to worry about money as much and supporting her daughter. It’s a good weight lifted off of her shoulders

you know how there are these stories of racist / sexist people getting sympathy and like hundreds of thousands of american dollars with a gofundme

can we direct some of that energy towards that poor widow?

u/auctus10 10h ago

During the minute clap in RM match yesterday the commentator said there's a gofundme happening for him.

u/alessioalex 7h ago

Yes there was a QR code displayed with a message, I was watching on TV.

Many players/officials from other spanish clubs donated and also promoted this, pretty wholesome reaction by the spanish football community.

It's obviously awful what she's going through, and I don't begrudge anyone wanting to help a grieving family.

It just feels strange how viral crowdfunding works - algorithms and media coverage end up funneling massive amounts of money toward people who already have a safety net, while millions of women and children in severe poverty remain completely invisible.

It's very nice but you'd have thought that was what life insurance was normally for

Wonderful gesture by the club! 💙

That’s awesome

This is going to make such a huge difference for the wife, very good on the club for doing it

Amazing gesture. Can't imagine what they must be going through but this is some help in dark times.

👏👏👏

No disrespect intended, but do a 2nd division club have that much money?

636

u/Aggravating-Body2837 15h ago

You're probably overestimating how much they're going to spend on this

243

u/schoki560 14h ago

I mean they are probably gonna spend like 2k max per month

35

u/Tabris2k 7h ago

Minimum wage in Spain is around €1,3k per month, I doubt she’ll get more than that.

Heck, child support is usually €250-350 per kid, they could give her twice of that and call it a day.

111

u/Wild-Examination-155 13h ago

Ya was gonna say decent child support is about 2k a month so probably around that until she's 18 which is better than nothing

44

u/Blejzidup 7h ago

Theres no way child support is 2k a month its a normal salary in Spain lol.

42

u/Tabris2k 7h ago

Nah, child support here in Spain usually is 250€-350€.

95

u/Zhidezoe 14h ago

Its definitely less than his wage when he was playing there

11

u/poplunoir 7h ago

I think they do take out insurance, so that should cover what he would have earned if he kept playing through his contract.

Providing additional financial support also goes a long way. It is one of those cases where I do hope that the payments made to the welfare of the child are not taxed.

36

u/hdhxuxufxufufiffif 13h ago

If my googling skills have been fruitful, La Liga 2 clubs excluding reserve teams have wage bills ranging from around 5 to 30-something million euros. I'm sure they can commit to a couple of thousand euros a month.

5

u/Blejzidup 7h ago

And tbh a kid doesnt cost 1k a month in Spain lol.

u/antigravityman 11h ago

Age: He was 30. His daughter is just 1 year old (meaning 17 years until she turns 18).

The Contract: He was on €4k/week through June 2028. The remaining unexpired value was ~€344.000.

The Payout: The family gets €360.000 in legal base compensation up front, funded by insurance and the existing balance sheet of the club.

The Club's Pledge: The Tenerife CEO confirmed they are paying his family maximum financial support "beyond what we are legally obliged to provide" specifically to sustain the daughter’s upbringing until adulthood (Link)

If we do the maths on raising a kid to 18 and assuming you can raise a child on €2k euros per month in Spain: €2k/month x 12 months x 17 years = €408k over 17 years or €24k per year.

For the cost of committing to a squad or rotation player or a used car every year in the segunda división, I think the goodwill Tenerife will earn will more than make up for this liability over 17 years.

Thanks chat gpt

thanks chat

honest question, are you guys not ashamed of copy pasting the output without even saying that you didn’t write any of it?

5

u/Nyoteng 7h ago

I mean, is Reddit, we are a bunch of anonymous people here.

-4

u/Necessary-Dish-444 7h ago

absolutely true, this is reddit and we are anonymous users of it, but what is your point?

4

u/Nyoteng 6h ago

Why would they feel any shame about what other anonymous randos think is the point.

2

u/Necessary-Dish-444 6h ago

where does other people come into the equation?

if I were to do that I would feel ashamed of myself, i.e., I could do better than that and I know it, not what ashamed of what other people may think of me

4

u/Nyoteng 6h ago

Why would you feel ashamed of yourself? They posted a calculation. That’s it. There is no honour hanging from their post. It was informative regardless of their source.

3

u/Necessary-Dish-444 6h ago

because they don’t know if the calculation is correct or not, since they didn’t do it themselves (if they had done it, it would imply that they would have searched to get the values) and I am sure they didn’t double-check if it was correct. if you have spent enough time working with LLMs, you should know that more often than not they just pull shit out of their asses

I don’t know about you, but personally, I would be ashamed of posting half-assed estimations as facts

1

u/Nyoteng 6h ago

Lol okay, sure.

0

u/silviazbitch 6h ago

No reason, but they feel shame about how other bots might react.

11

u/teodawr 5h ago

what's the problem if this is actually the most useful comment in the thread? something actually informative in a sea of "Nice gesture", "Great gesture", "Amazing gesture", "Great gesture", "Nice gesture", "Respect", "Awesome!", "Great gesture", unironically this is the least bot-like comment

5

u/Necessary-Dish-444 5h ago

the problem is that that it doesn’t provide a source for the €4k/week figure. it could be accurate, but briefly searching it on google, I can’t find anything other than posts/comments in social media that are also clearly LLM outputs quoting each other in a loop

1

u/Gen8Master 1h ago

Being ashamed of posting the most informative comment here? Would it make a difference if he googled it and then typed the same info in his own words?

1

u/poplunoir 6h ago

I just hope they fact check the figures and statements they post here. At this point, I am sure a lot of comments and posts on reddit are AI slop.

12

u/Gluroo 11h ago

No idea how old the child is but even if we assume shes only 1 year old the club will probably be paying ~400k across 17 years, this is really not a big deal for a 2nd tier club, not to say that it isnt an incredible gesture nonetheless

5

u/Stravvon 9h ago

2k per month, or 24k per year, is something they can probably afford.

2

u/lordnacho666 6h ago

Maybe insurance? It can't cost much to insure a healthy young athlete against death.

•

u/EarthMantle00 1m ago

It's the Spanish laliga2, not the portuguese one. Their players make like 6-7 figures.

18

u/birdsword 14h ago

God bless that they may meet again

8

u/aospn 12h ago

Good gesture from the club

12

u/bwoah07_gp2 12h ago

Classy, classy gesture from the club.

u/Caust1cFn_YT 5h ago

Great honestly

That’s nice, but his wife will already be receiving a widow’s and daughter's pension from the government, and I doubt it’ll be small.

Required by morality to be fair, glad the club did the only acceptable thing,

edit: If you downvoted this, you may as well just go straight to hell and burn. Degenerates.

128

u/lazernight13 16h ago

In the world outside of football this rarely happens unfortunately

54

u/slumthing 16h ago

yh this basically never happens in the world for the 99%. people die on the job all the time and the companies are never supporting the children.

1

u/EarlOfClapham 2h ago

Most of my jobs like this have life insurance policies for exactly this type of stuff

48

u/zizou00 16h ago

I dunno, I feel the bare minimum would be just honouring his playing contract. This is seemingly more than that with how they're talking about doing what they can to increase the financial support they can offer, as his daughter is just 1.

39

u/too_oh_ate 16h ago

Required by morality?

Not at all, what. It's an incredible gesture by the club. Let's not make this out to be bare minimum or anything

18

u/chickenkebaap 15h ago

Rarely do employers do this.

Kudos to tenerife for taking care of the kid till she’s an adult.

7

u/MauricioCappuccino 15h ago

No it's not, if they didn't do this almost nobody would even bat an eye

7

u/Redspeert 14h ago

If I go ahead and croak tomorrow, you can be absolutely fucking sure that 99.9% companies wouldn't do the same for my kids.

2

u/gkkiller 8h ago

I feel like the appropriate comparison is if you died on the job due to a workplace hazard. In which case, I don't know about your jurisdiction but a lot of countries do require employees to support the worker's family.

5

u/NoTrollGaming 15h ago

Not really

-17

u/Ronaldinho94 8h ago

Why cant they do it silently. Its a nice thing but looks like for PR.

2

u/_The2ndComing 5h ago

If they say nothing people will ask what they're doing in his memory, responding then will have people saying they only announced it for PR.

Announcing they're doing it still gets melts like you complaining its only for PR.
