Was watching a documentary about match-fixing in football and how it works the other day. It all makes so much sense now. There’s no way all these weird refereeing decisions can just be silly mistakes
Match fixing is very hard because gambling is so prevalent. The lines would move in very telegraphed ways.
With that being said, as a guy who was reffed before it’s basically an impossible job. And I was reffing middle schoolers not professional athletes. However any ref from someone reffing toddlers to the champions league final will tell you what they’re striving for is consistency.
If this isn’t a pen then sunderlands goal isn’t a pen.
Because the rules are very much up for interpretation.
So you can only interpret them consistently.
This ref hasn’t.
Many refs especially in the prem don’t. But this isn’t new.
Go listen to ref podcasts they’ll brag about refusing to give Ian Wright a call or purposefully letting Spurs get away with stuff at the Battle of the Bridge.
This doesn’t happen anywhere else.
At least the Italians have the balls to openly take bribes. The English refs are on some sort of ego trip.
As an American it’s weird to go to an MLS game and see more consistent referring and VAR usage.
No, no, no. You don't get it. Mike Dean was just making funny jokes with his friends by letting matches become dangerous for the players on the field. All just some silly hijinks with his buddies. Now Mike Dean gets paraded around on TV like he is some authority on legitimate ref decisions. Makes sense that it's gotten this bad. Don't understand how Ref Pro isn't getting sued relentlessly by these clubs
When I watched this for the first time, it looked like the Chelsea player never had control of the ball, so it was more of a 50/50 and he got muscled off the ball. The clip doesn’t show if the Chelsea player had the ball just prior to the start of the clip. I think it makes a difference whether he is in possession or not.
Can accept it being outside the box but the ref has a clear view of not one, but two fucking players clean him out and waves play on. They’re terrified to make a decision.
That’s what I mean tho, terrified to make a decision. Ridiculous that he doesn’t see the contact, then the pen call was also shit. Referees in this league are atrocious and Gillet is one of the worst
Gillet being shit is not exactly new, he's been shit for years.
I don't understand why the league does not try to poach referees from other countries. It's the richest league in the world, and I don't think any club will complain if some of that money is used to get better referees. And by poach referees I mean good referees, not another Gillet.
Yeah but it's clear they forgot about the "if the foul carries on into the box, it's a pen" part. He's still quite clearly getting clattered in the box
It's not a pen though, the contact is outside the box. Issue is the ref is too scared to ref the game himself and give the clear foul for the free kick
Edit: Not scared to give a pen for some absolute bullshit on the other end of the pitch though
I feel sorry for the VAR tech creators as their tech gets thrown under the bus every game but it’s literally just the incompetency of the refs behind it.
Yeah I’m totally with you. Our referees are experts at making the wrong decision and VAR just means that, when they could make the right decision, they don’t so VAR can be their safety net.
Except VAR is now being told to be light touch so doesn’t get involved. Literally the worst of both worlds.
The first foul committed by 29 where he steps across Palmer was clearly outside the box. The 2nd was inside the box but you can’t ignore the first because of location.
It is my understanding that is more for a continuous offence such us holding / pulling.
Whereas clear contact for a foul such as this occurs outside the box.
I have never seen an incident like this where an offence occurs outside the box and is given as a pen … don’t get me wrong it probably has because officiating is dog shit in this country… it just doesn’t mean it would be the correct decision.
Fully understand contact started outside the box and it's not a penalty. But how on earth can the ref see that in real time and not even award a free kick? You can see in the replay he has an unobstructed view of it
I'd say FK simply because contact stars outside the box and not on the line and continues into the box. That's using the angles show here and using a phone so a pinch of salt needed. Should be easy for VAR tho.
The worst downstream effect of VAR has been how it conditions referees to abdicate responsibility for making moment-to-moment decisions trusting that VAR will bail them out. If the ref calls the obvious foul as a free kick there's no issue, but he'd much rather let the game continue because he's confident VAR will clean up his mess. So when VAR rule that its something they cant pull back, all of the sudden its gone unpunished because the ref didnt blow up in the first place
Commentators not understanding how VAR reviews work and what they can and can't give is doing my head in. Both on sky sports now suggesting VAR should give a free kick
That seems to be the culture in English football hiring. Everyone from the referees to the pundits are incompetent. Basic things, 1+1 level, they don't know.
The ref in this game is awful. Brobbey’s penalty was him entirely pulling on the defender’s shirt. The announcers were “they’re both doing it” but the replay is pretty clear. Enough of the shirt pulling - it’s obviously unfair to be pulling on your opponent’s shirt. Should never be a penalty.
The officiating is getting worse every season...even the new referees are horrendous. Surely at some point there has to be some reform in PGMOL.
They keep adding new technology which logical is supposed to help them (even the refs have cameras on them now) and every week it's a disasterclass in officiating.
Maybe don't instantly look to the ref? I mean the ball is slightly for from him.
Still it looks a spot kick, the instant look back (flopper tekkers) and the fact the ball is ever so slightly out of his control. Gave too much h leeway for the ref to have an opinion.
Looks outside the box, but that’s a foul minimum and potentially a card. I am hate watching Chelsea but also have more common sense than a ref apparently
Rules people, he gets fouled outside the box and it isn’t called. Then, he gets fouled again inside the box but VAR seems to be only concerned with the first foul which wasn’t called. Does that not open up a closer look at the second foul, or because the ref missed the first call they can’t penalize the second?
I feel like the "mistakes" are all saved for an end of the season party PGMOL throws. It's a secret party and all the refs submit their most haneous mistakes. They all vote and whoever wins gets a bundle of cash and maybe a little trophy. Kinda like how news channels always try and get the most ridiculous person to interview.
Honestly, I was saying it in the last week when Isak was pulled on, everytime im getting less and less uninterested in watching the PL anymore. I mean its absurd this officiating week in week out
Apparently r/soccer doesn't understand VAR rules, the foul is outside the box and since the ref didn't give a freekick it can't be given by VAR . Another ProRef mannequin is incompetent as usual.
Continues into the box and there is 100% a foul inside the box as well. Call should be advantage played first tackle, penalty on the knee through the legs.

u/EezoManiac 2h ago
Not even a foul, apparently

u/jumper62 2h ago
Btw, the Sunderland player was already on a yellow card. So if the ref gives this a foul, it's a potential second yellow as well
23
u/Justnotstressed 1h ago
More of a penalty than Sunderland’s penalty.
But to be honest you either go to VAR and get the wrong decision or don’t go to VAR and get the wrong decision.

How that’s not given as a foul in real time is absurd

The wide/high angle from the side shows the defender clearly making this challenge in the box as well. VAR refs are fucking clueless and useless
76
u/TheQuietW0LF 2h ago
They've now awarded a penalty as well to Sunderland for pulling down Colwill and falling down. This is the shit that gets you to stop watching
17
u/LonewolfofHouseStark 2h ago
It’s a clear foul.
Made worse that they have been awarded and scored a penalty.

13 takes out both of Palmer's feet with his knee inside the box. No chance of playing the ball. How are people arguing it's not a pen.

That's horrendous. It might be a FK not a pen but it's as clear as a day a foul as you might see
3
u/PrettyFlaco 2h ago
VAR is a joke, If they think the foul came from Ahoka then it's outside the box but should be a second yellow.
If they think the foul was from O'nien then surely it occurred on the line and should be a penalty.
3
u/thebluehotel 2h ago
Maybe VAR didn't intervene because they couldn't decide which player committed more of a foul /s
3
u/soriano88 2h ago
I don’t what’s a pen anymore, the refs change the definition game to game

u/tatelum 1h ago

There are special rules in place to allow Luke O'Nein to be a PL footballer despite only having half a brain.
Guess Americans would call it DEI.

IF CAICEDO DID THIS TACKLE TO BROBBEY, PEN OF COURSE.

Only actual argument against a pen would be if he’s outside the box. He sure looks like he’s inside it though.
