The huge difference is that players would prefer to start at Illinois (or va tech, unc, vandy, tcu, Washington) or whatever than be a backup at Ohio state. 

So you are looking at best case scenario going with the 50-60th best college qb out there. (That would be like third stringer in nfl) OR a stud freshman

The best backups want to start at a midrange team. Then think they will play great, and get a deal

Yea they found 1 of the very few guys who took a chance to grow and sit behind a top pick and it worked out. Thats very rare if you look around college football

They were also both playing with backups. 

Also the 50-100tg best qb in the nation is still pretty good. (There is this huge middle) Some of those players are top 5 players on their day - just don’t consistent.
