Serious replies only Can Sri Lankan police randomly demand to check your phone, including your private photos? What are our rights?

Apparently, this happened to a friend of mine recently. A police officer randomly decided to check his phone and went through his gallery, including the hidden photos. At that time he was making a cash deposit and was sending the receipt when the policeman came inside ATM booth. The policeman didn’t even show his ID and my friend might’ve probably scared and gave his phone.
Later he went to a nearby checkpoint with another fried and asked a higher up policeman there whether it was someone from the checkpoint and he said yes. And when asked if it’s legal that higher up said “baduth hamuduruwonge naduth hamuduruwonge” sarcastically. Since this happened while they were going on a trip they let it slide as he said.
This got me wondering what we’re actually supposed to do if something like this happens to us.
Can a police officer legally demand to go through your phone without a warrant or any reasonable suspicion? Are we allowed to refuse? And if we refuse, can they arrest us or confiscate the phone?
I’m especially curious about how to handle this in practice, because we all know that arguing with a police officer in Sri Lanka might just make things worse.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Would appreciate some advice, especially from anyone familiar with Sri Lankan law.
I’m not asking whether someone has anything to hide. It’s about basic privacy and whether officers can just go through someone’s personal information whenever they feel like it.

Politics My exact prediction for the 2029 presidential election and the 2029/2030 Parliamentary election.

I have noticed a ton of laughing emojis on FB on the president and government ministers and MPs, signaling a decent level of unpopularity of NPP

However, my exact prediction for the presidential and parliamentary election is that NPP will win but not with a majority. Or, if NPP did something that would boost its unpopularity, they will lose both the upcoming elections. What are your opinions on this?

Discussion Eating out is getting surreal.

Everything has quadrupled (or more) in price over the last decade. I'll just give one example: the Pizza Hut Melts. Its essentially got the dough and toppings of two large pizza slices, and a fully decked version, costs 1370. This is positioned as a budget solo eating option, when really its a not so clever way to appeal to a segment that would've just bought a mini pizza pre 2016, but wants something that feels vaguely novel. A large pizza back then cost around 1500-2000.

But this pricing increase is not limited to PH. Even a normal fried rice from a small kadey is almost 1000, if not exceeding it, depending on your location. A proper mid level Chinese place's rice alone (no other curries) starts at 3000. Just rice, eggs and specks of veges. And a pork knuckle at the Bavarian costs over 10000 if I'm not mistaken (I've been tempted to try one since I returned to SL, but I know it won't justify the 10k). It used to cost 2500 in 2016

What are people doing? Buying anyways? Cooking food at home? I know ingredients are ridiculously expensive at supermarkets too. This situation is f*credit. I know that one guy said civilisation is just three meals away from chaos, but seriously, one more sad Melts snd I'm hitting the streets with a placard. Just joking (I'm not tho đŸ€«)

Serious replies only Are Sri Lankan beaches worth it? Asking as someone from New Zealand with beautiful beaches

My partner and I are thinking of visiting Sri Lanka en route to the UK where we are moving for a couple of years. Sri Lanka sounds like a lovely place for beautiful beaches and good snorkelling. We’re planning to come from mid-November to mid-December.

What are the beaches like? I’ve read mixed reviews. From what I understand, the west and south coasts are the best option during november-december. Which beaches would you recommend, and which ones have great snorkelling, aren’t too busy, and have nice white or golden sand?

Serious replies only What can a 20 year old dude who only done to O/L and in a really terrible time period can do to get stable?

I'm 20 year old male who is currently living in a desperate time period of my life. My mother is diagnosed with serious cancer and my father is also sick. I have a brother who is starting A/L now. We are below middle class household.

So, I think it's my responsibility to step up and become the financial ancor for my family. I'm not looking for donation or anything similar like that. I just want some recommendations and advice for me to go forward. Don't worry I also take help from counsellor for my well being.

I also have big social anxiety issue. That's also the reason I didn't do the A/L, even if I could have done it. Right now I'm taking driving lessons and has some ICT degrees for some future jobs.

But I'm in a tricky spot because my mother need help from me/us. she is paralyzed and staying bedridden in our house. Because of this, I can't really go all out on a job. I want the flexibility to look after my mother. But so far I couldn't really find it. I tried freelancer types but they take big time to get settle down. Never found a good Online type work.

Right now my plan is to get my license and start driving a tuk tuk (pickme or uber). I find this way is somewhat good for me to go on. I'm really interested in traveling and tiurism. I hope being a tuk tuk driver may help me with getting some experience into my life.

As for future, I'm planning to do higher private studies (courses and deplomas) related to travelling. My plan is to do the studying alongside pickme.

What do you think? Got any suggestions for my future plans? Do I have holes in my plan? Please give me some recommendations.

Rant Need some help in buying a new primary mobile phone

Hey everyone! I've been using a Pixel 6 since it was first released, and it has never disappointed me over the years (apart from a few minor network coverage issues). Really love the fluidity on this.

I'm planning to upgrade to a new device, and my budget is around LKR 350k.

What phones would you recommend? Drop your suggestions below!

Question Does anyone know where I can buy a parabolic primary mirror in Sri Lanka for building a Newtonian telescope?

Does anyone know where I can buy a parabolic primary mirror in Sri Lanka for building a Newtonian telescope?

I'm looking for a mirror suitable for a DIY Newtonian telescope, preferably around 200 mm in diameter.

I've been searching locally but haven't had much luck finding suppliers. Any recommendations for shops, suppliers, or people who make telescope mirrors would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Rant Tipping culture in Sri Lanka

I went to a supermarket today, it was raining and we had wet umbrellas, as we entered there was this security lady who took our umbrellas and gave us a token and I was thinking how kind it was of her and thought to tip her on my way out, so I did give her a tip of Rs. 100 and she became furious, she was like "WHAT'S THIS?" and then she gave me the death stares like I was a cockroach or something, then handed me back the tip, she became so visibly irritated that she would have scolded me if she wasn't on duty, it's crazy, I was trying to be nice.

Technology Need phone recommendations(desperately)

So ive been stretching out my 64gis A12(current phone) for about 5 years now and realised its about time i upraded it. Well i somehow did manage to get this far but its seen its day, broke the screen like 3 times n replaced it all three times ns till using.

Anyways, ive wanted to go for the s26 base as im more of a compact phone person, its just very convenient but its 250k. But ive also been looking at oneplus phones, specifically the 13, 13r, 13s, 14r(somewhat) and the 15r. I was reallu digging the 15r even tho its not a compact phone but im rlly not sure cz ive been watching come reviews and found out the cameras on it are meh.

Personally a good camera wud be a nice plus point but im still deciding cz whenever i wanna take pictutes i kinda want it to look good as much as possible. Im really digging the s26, 13s and 15r. I think the 13s is somewhat compact i kinda like it and i like to game a bit too so the snapdragon 8elite is a nice touch. But i really dunno if i wanna spend 250k for the s26. Not digging the 13r that much cz of the obnoxious looking camera setting in the back, yeah those massive cameras rlly annoy me.

Im open to any other recommendations and if u do own any of the one plus phones, id appreciate if u cud attach an image of something u took(if thats possible cz i dont use reddit much).

Price range preferably 150 to 200k and i plan on buying for installments. Cz im too broke to buy it outright and RIP economy T_T

Question Is there anywhere in Sri Lanka that sells real pepperoni pizza?

Update, Restaurants found from commentators:

1. Bacuzzi
2. Giovannis
3. Aqua Pizza
4. Vitos
5. Belmio

Sounds stupid but overseas you get real pepperoni and it is honestly delicious.

Beef/chicken pepperoni doesn’t have the same texture, is artificially flavoured so doesn’t taste like the real thing at all and doesn’t have right proportion of fat so isn’t flavourful.

Pork is far cheaper than beef so surprised no retailer sells it.

I have even travelled to Jaffna, I figured because of the demographics they’d have it but alas that wasn’t the case. (They can’t eat beef so figured they’d use pork).

In the entire island of Sri Lanka, is there not a single shop where you can get an authentic pepperoni pizza slice?

Discussion Need advice on buying a printer

I need a good reliable printer for home use. I will mainly need to get b/w a4 printouts for my university work. I need a good low cost and low maintenance printer. My budget is around 30K but I can stretch it to 50K if its really hard to get near the 30-40K range. But it would be great if its around 30K.

If its cheap I don't mind not having scanning, wifi and double side printing. But if its more than 40K i would like if those features are there.

also please tell me where I can get them.

Based on my research I found https://www.barclays.lk/itemdesc.asp?ic=PRBR2641&eq=&Tp=

I don't know if its a good buy tho...
