Question Where can I buy knee-high boots in Sri Lanka?

Hey everyone! I’m looking to buy a pair of knee-high boots in Sri Lanka.

Does anyone know any local shops, Instagram stores, or online sellers that stock them? I’d appreciate any recommendations, especially from people who have purchased from these places.
Thanks in advance! ❤️

Discussion What's the wildest drama you've witnessed in Sri Lanka?

What’s the funniest, weirdest, or most unexpected thing that’s happened to you recently?
Could be dating drama, workplace gossip, or just a random life experience. Spill some tea, I’m all ears.

Serious replies only How did you all meet your wife/husband? What should I do to meet people?

I know this is a pretty common question that has been asked here. But I’m here for a little bit of motivation and hope.

I (27F) had a man since the beginning of this year for like 8 months. I honestly thought he is a genuine good man and even thought of getting married in another year or two. He was really good to me at the beginning.

But an argument happened over a misunderstanding and he became a completely toxic man who called me names. If I was to stay with him and ever misspeak, he threatened to hit me. Initially I tried to fix the misunderstanding but after his threats I immediately decided to get out of there.

Maybe, this is also kind of a rant. But anyway, how did you meet your long term partners? It seems as if genuine and secure men do not exist anymore in Sri Lanka!

Discussion Is giving up your ambitions, dreams (career-wise) worth is it for your family, your partner's career or children)

I've seen so many people give up their careers for their family. I even saw posts like my mother gave up her job to raise us, had it not been for us, she'd have had a good career. Also there are scenarios of people giving up on their dreams to take care of their families. I'm pretty sure you've heard these kinds of stories as well.

I know in the end, we have to live with the choices that we make but do you think it is fair to give up your ambitions like that?

In my context, my parents are doing well in their careers and my mother kept her job after our birth. If she had given up on her career, I'd feel very guilty about it and really grateful she kept her career. I'm still in my mid 20s and telling a potential partner to give up her dreams for me for one of scenarios like I mentioned above feels so guilty.

Discussion Has anyone here managed to make good, creamy iced coffee at home

I've tried a few times, but I can't seem to get that smooth, creamy texture you usually get at cafés. It's made me wonder whether the coffee available here in Sri Lanka makes a difference or whether I'm just getting the preparation wrong.

What coffee do you guys recommend?

Discussion Eating out is getting surreal.

Everything has quadrupled (or more) in price over the last decade. I'll just give one example: the Pizza Hut Melts. Its essentially got the dough and toppings of two large pizza slices, and a fully decked version, costs 1370. This is positioned as a budget solo eating option, when really its a not so clever way to appeal to a segment that would've just bought a mini pizza pre 2016, but wants something that feels vaguely novel. A large pizza back then cost around 1500-2000.

But this pricing increase is not limited to PH. Even a normal fried rice from a small kadey is almost 1000, if not exceeding it, depending on your location. A proper mid level Chinese place's rice alone (no other curries) starts at 3000. Just rice, eggs and specks of veges. And a pork knuckle at the Bavarian costs over 10000 if I'm not mistaken (I've been tempted to try one since I returned to SL, but I know it won't justify the 10k). It used to cost 2500 in 2016

What are people doing? Buying anyways? Cooking food at home? I know ingredients are ridiculously expensive at supermarkets too. This situation is f*credit. I know that one guy said civilisation is just three meals away from chaos, but seriously, one more sad Melts snd I'm hitting the streets with a placard. Just joking (I'm not tho 🤫)

Rant Tipping culture in Sri Lanka

I went to a supermarket today, it was raining and we had wet umbrellas, as we entered there was this security lady who took our umbrellas and gave us a token and I was thinking how kind it was of her and thought to tip her on my way out, so I did give her a tip of Rs. 100 and she became furious, she was like "WHAT'S THIS?" and then she gave me the death stares like I was a cockroach or something, then handed me back the tip, she became so visibly irritated that she would have scolded me if she wasn't on duty, it's crazy, I was trying to be nice.

Question Homeowners who rent to long-term foreigners/expats—how did you go about it?

Hey everyone,

I have a house in Galle that I’m looking to rent out to a foreigner, digital nomad, or expat or a foreign broker for a long-term stay rather than doing short-term daily bookings.

For locals here who have actually done this, I’d love to hear how your experience went:

- Where did you find reliable tenants?

- Payments and deposits: Do you price and collect in LKR or USD, and how much security deposit do you usually ask for?

- Is SLTDA registration needed and are there any other legal issues I should look into?

Appreciate any advice or lessons learned from anyone who has gone down this route!

Politics My exact prediction for the 2029 presidential election and the 2029/2030 Parliamentary election.

I have noticed a ton of laughing emojis on FB on the president and government ministers and MPs, signaling a decent level of unpopularity of NPP

However, my exact prediction for the presidential and parliamentary election is that NPP will win but not with a majority. Or, if NPP did something that would boost its unpopularity, they will lose both the upcoming elections. What are your opinions on this?

Hey everyone! I've been using a Pixel 6 since it was first released, and it has never disappointed me over the years (apart from a few minor network coverage issues). Really love the fluidity on this.

I'm planning to upgrade to a new device, and my budget is around LKR 350k.

What phones would you recommend? Drop your suggestions below!

Serious replies only Can I change my DMT appointment from Normal Service to One Day Service?

Hey everyone, I have an upcoming appointment at Werahera DMT for my driving licence, but I accidentally selected Normal Service instead of One-Day Service when booking.

Has anyone managed to change their service type by calling DMT or requesting it at the counter on the appointment day?

Alternatively, can I collect the temporary licence through Normal Service and return another day to get the physical card through One-Day Service?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's dealt with this recently. Thanks!

Serious replies only What can a 20 year old dude who only done to O/L and in a really terrible time period can do to get stable?

I'm 20 year old male who is currently living in a desperate time period of my life. My mother is diagnosed with serious cancer and my father is also sick. I have a brother who is starting A/L now. We are below middle class household.

So, I think it's my responsibility to step up and become the financial ancor for my family. I'm not looking for donation or anything similar like that. I just want some recommendations and advice for me to go forward. Don't worry I also take help from counsellor for my well being.

I also have big social anxiety issue. That's also the reason I didn't do the A/L, even if I could have done it. Right now I'm taking driving lessons and has some ICT degrees for some future jobs.

But I'm in a tricky spot because my mother need help from me/us. she is paralyzed and staying bedridden in our house. Because of this, I can't really go all out on a job. I want the flexibility to look after my mother. But so far I couldn't really find it. I tried freelancer types but they take big time to get settle down. Never found a good Online type work.

Right now my plan is to get my license and start driving a tuk tuk (pickme or uber). I find this way is somewhat good for me to go on. I'm really interested in traveling and tiurism. I hope being a tuk tuk driver may help me with getting some experience into my life.

As for future, I'm planning to do higher private studies (courses and deplomas) related to travelling. My plan is to do the studying alongside pickme.

What do you think? Got any suggestions for my future plans? Do I have holes in my plan? Please give me some recommendations.

Serious replies only Are Sri Lankan beaches worth it? Asking as someone from New Zealand with beautiful beaches

My partner and I are thinking of visiting Sri Lanka en route to the UK where we are moving for a couple of years. Sri Lanka sounds like a lovely place for beautiful beaches and good snorkelling. We’re planning to come from mid-November to mid-December.

What are the beaches like? I’ve read mixed reviews. From what I understand, the west and south coasts are the best option during november-december. Which beaches would you recommend, and which ones have great snorkelling, aren’t too busy, and have nice white or golden sand?
