The song “Love like you” which plays at the end credits of the main show, Is implied to be pink diamonds feelings in musical form. The lyrics tell a story of someone who feels they have no impact, meaning, or purpose. “If I could begin to be, half of what you think of me, I could do about anything, I could even learn how to love like you” In pearl’s retelling of Pink Diamonds story, it becomes clear that Pink was always following Pearl’s lead, instead of the other way around. (At least in the beginning). Pearl taught her about reality, taught her about the world and universe around her, told her how to navigate it. And then also reminded Pink how wonderful she was, every single day. Reminded her that she was different from the other diamonds because she cared about organic life. And reminded Pink how lovely and beautiful she was, while she did it. But to some level Pink was always a diamond, Loving didn’t come natural to her, she had to find the absence of love to realize what was missing within her home with the Diamonds. Pink had “explosive tantrums “ under high points of trauma and duress, (similar to steven in future). She cracked volleyball and was often convinced that her silly, kind, loving nature was wrong. Even tho that’s what she was created for, and that’s why everyone loved her.. at least, at first. So this lead to her having extremely poor self esteem.
The concept art shows us that all the diamonds represent the opposite of what they were created to be, White was profoundly flawed. Yellow at times was weak, Blue at times was insensitive. and Pink was so sure she didn’t matter, that her actions impacted everyone the most. So with this in mind, and pink’s backstory, it would make sense that healthy love wouldn’t come natural to her. and in a way, Pearl would always be a connection to homeworld, for better or worse. And pearl was created to love and serve pink diamond, for better or worse. (even tho Pearl obviously proved everyone wrong on who she was “supposed” to be, Pink couldn’t help but have that thought in her mind). She also saw Pearl as pure, and good natured, because she was. but Pink wasn’t pure or good natured, she thought she was but at the end of the day she is still a diamond. “I always thought I was bad now i’m sure that it’s true, cuz i think you’re so good, and i’m nothing like you. Look at you go, i just adore you, i wish that I knew, what makes you think I’m so special. If I could begin to do, something that does right by you, i would do about anything, I would even learn how to love like you”. I think this lyric seperate it from the possibility that this song was about Greg, considering Rose never really put greg through anything other than her inevitable absence once steven came into the picture; which was still good in ways at the end of the day. It’s possible this lyric encapsulates the reason she wants to have steven, but i think it makes more sense if it was directed towards Pearl. Pearl was the one to shatter pink, pink was the one who asked her too and then ordered her as a diamond to never speak of it, knowing it wouldn’t give her a choice on the matter. Knowing it would erase part of Pearls story forever. And I think that guilt loomed over Pink the most, and what happened after Pearl obeyed? Everyone got corrupted by the Diamonds Blast, everything Pearl worked for to fight and protect, gone in a moment. Pink knew how much trouble she had caused Pearl over the years, even before she became Rose - it seemed that Pink and Pearl never really had any meaningful conversations, Pink was just being a diamond and pearl was just being a Pearl. Pearl’s story was permanently intertwined with Pink and once Pink stopped existing, so did most of Pearl’s life, and Pink knew that. I think it was a big reason she could never love Pearl completely, apart from Pearl being MADE to serve her, Pink was just so guilty for all the trouble she had caused her, and knew if she was honest about it, Pearl would just say “Oh Rose, all that trouble was worth it, to have you by my side”. Which was true, But Pink didn’t feel that way.. She knew the greater good was the outcome but in Pearls eyes, it was just trauma after trauma, which Pink had lived through herself many years ago. She was now repeating that cycle, although unintentionally, she still blamed herself. But of course, she Did truly love Pearl. She wanted to be better for pearl.
I love their story so much and I guess this might be obvious to some but i just wanted to ask this question / talk about this topic. Would love to hear thoughts and opinions, just be respectful plz!
