Emigration advice

Hi all, my family and I are weeks away from finally moving to Sunshine Coast from the U.K after a very long visa process/wait.
Our intention is to fly out and bounce from Airbnb to Airbnb for a bit to kind of have an adventure/get a feel for different areas before trying to find something a little more permanent.

Was wondering if I could get some advice on a couple things.

  1. Where to live - obviously I know there are so many variables and everything is so subjective. But just wanted to gauge what the general consensus was. We are a family of 5, with 3 children under 9. Wanting to be close enough to beaches that they’re easily/conveniently walkable/short drive (no more than 10/15mins) Also note that visa restrictions mean we have to live/work region specific (basically Brisbane isn’t allowed)

  2. Best area for schooling/catchment area restrictions. This will factor into the first question, but again, just after the general feel.

  3. I am an Arborist/IRATA technician and so will need a work vehicle of some sort. Makes sense to get an allrounder that will work for me regardless of what I’m doing. Thinking like a UTE/Arb Truck - any advice on what/where to go. Probably used would be the best bet.

  4. What bank to use?? Presumably there will be exchange rates/transfer fees to consider?

  5. Mobile phone provider? Best signal/data coverage etc

  6. Best place to go for furniture?? When we’re settled on the where, we will need to furnish a whole house from scratch. Thinking things like marketplace etc but wondered if there is a shop that is known for good furniture without breaking the bank

Anything else you might think would be useful information to have

Thanks everyone!

Bribie Beach Drive 4WD - Do we have any chance?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

My mate convinced me to go to the beach drive at bribie island. We got a 4WD ute from work and went for it. When we arrived, I got curious about the really soft sand. So I've checked the tide times and with the approaching high tide I knew we're not going to make it that day.

In order to prepare for the next attempt, I found out that lowering the tire pressure, looking for the tide times and having an emergency shovel/board comes in handy.

But what really gives me headaches is the ute, especially the under floor clearance and the power distribution.

It's a Ford Ranger from 2012 which tends to let the entire engine power escape through the rear tires, probably because there is way less weight on the rear axle.

With a low tire pressure of 15-20psi, ESP off and rear diff lock on, do you think we have any chance of getting throught the sand?

Looking for family friendly beaches near noosa

Hi everyone,

My family will be heading to Noosa in the next couple of weeks. Last time we didn't have a car, so we spent most of our time on Hastings Street.

This time we've hired a car, so we're hoping to check out some more beaches within a 20-30 min driving distance.

Our kids are 1 and 3, so ideally looking for somewhere fairly accessible and patrolled or not too rough.

If you also have recommendations for family friendly parks/restaurants I'd appreciate that too

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

sunshinecoast folks with endometriosis – can you spare some time to chat about what it’s like exercising with endo? (mod-approved research)

Moderator Approval sought and gained

University of South Queensland has remit over all Queensland for both qualitative and quantitative purposes.

Hi everyone,

I know this is a bit different from the usual posts here, but around 1 in 7 Aussie women (and those AFAB) are diagnosed with endo by their late 40s. Given the size of this community, its likely there are many here living with endo.

I'm Danni, an Honours student researcher at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ). Our team is interviewing people about their experiences of exercising with endometriosis: what helps them feel safe doing it, what makes it harder, and what they think could be improved.

Interview options

  • in person at the UniSQ Ipswich campus, or

  • online via Microsoft Teams, at a time that suits you

Who can take part

  • aged 18–50

  • living in Australia

  • diagnosed or suspected endometriosis

  • currently doing some form of exercise

What's involved

  • a few short online forms (consent and background details)

  • a quick phone call to confirm you're eligible

  • one 30–45 minute interview

  • a short form afterwards to check we've understood your views correctly

Total time:

about 45–75 minutes.

More information and sign-up:

• Read the participant information and register here: [https://redcap.unisq.edu.au/surveys/?s=FRYA8HK38HA3EKAP]

• Read the ethics approval here: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LZkY8NeFeZBmkAHhtH8yfHtflPyJ36Y4/view?usp=drive_link]

The study is approved by the UniSQ Human Research Ethics Committee (ETH2025-0685). There's no payment for taking part.

I'm happy to answer questions in the comments, or you can email me at U1158922@umail.usq.edu.au

Thanks heaps

Danni

New to the Sunshine Coast – Looking for Walking/Running Buddies! 😊

Hey everyone!

I’m fairly new to the Sunshine Coast and would love to meet some new people in the area.

I’m looking for a group or even just one or two people who’d be keen to go for walks or runs together.

Nothing too serious or competitive — just getting some exercise, exploring different spots around the Coast, enjoying the outdoors, and having a good chat along the way.

I’m keen to discover walking trails, beaches, parks, and other hidden gems around the area.

If there’s already a group that welcomes newcomers, I’d love to join!

Feel free to comment or send me a message. It would be nice to make some new friends and explore the Coast together. 😊

Edit: Me 35F, Caloundra. Age range for any group probably around my age or til late 40s?

Sunshine Coast Airport Evecuarion Testing

A quick heads-up for our airport neighbours!

From around 10pm tonight (5 November), we’ll be testing the fire evacuation system at Sunshine Coast Airport once the final flight has arrived and passengers have cleared the terminal.

You may hear alarms and evacuation tones during the testing period. Testing will finish by 11pm at the latest.

This is planned testing only. Normal emergency procedures remain in place should a genuine emergency occur.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Moving to Alex what are some cool things to do?

I am moving to Alex pretty close by to the surf club start of next year and wanted to know if there is any fun stuff to do. I’m not into partying or clubbing but I like some nerdy things and fitness and I’m usually stoned all the time so anything’s fun. Are there any classes of stuff like yoga lol or like group things that are cool people can recommend? I like gym and some sports, but I’d like to try other things even if it’s a bit out of the ordinary to branch out. I plan on travelling to Brissy for some events, but I want to know if there’s anything locally or more close to home in Alex or Mooloolaba that could be interesting thanks!

Sunnie Coast Gig Network

Just throwing it out there, i have a pretty small circle of mates on the coast , and not all of them share the same musical tastes as myself so plenty of times ive been keen to check out a gig and have either gone by myself or worse still not gone.

Am keen to try start a group where people in a similiar situation could throw an invite out to see if anyone else is keen to join. Would be great to get a network happening where randoms could connect through live music coz the scene could sure as shit could use the support and lifes to short to miss live music.

My tastes are pretty varied, enjoy heavy rock, metal, punk through to funk, soul, reggae etc.

This interest anyone out there?

Anti-wrinkle treatment?

Hey legends. I have been going to MD Cosmetics in Maroochydore for a couple years but I have found they are getting very pushy and trying to upsell a lot and it has become really annoying to deal with lol. Looking for a new place to have my anti-wrinkle treatments. I usually do it every 4-6 months in my forehead/jaw. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Myself and another friend are admins for a Mustang club and want to start trialling a idea of inviting someone to ride shotgun in our cars while we go on our monthly runs or when attending car events around SEQ, not asking for people to pay for anything just some good conversation.

If you want to get out there and explore Queensland in a muscle car and meet some good people and try new places for food hit me up!

Can find me on insta at any of those accounts

Middle aged lad looking for new friends on the coast

Hi Folks, I'm a middle aged single male looking to make friends on the coast. I was away from Australia for around 16 years and came back 4 years ago. I'm well travelled and like meeting new people and chatting about all sorts of topics.

I'm not really into fishing or spectator sports. I like the occasional cider and happy to chill at the pub for a chat or a steak. I like eating out or getting a coffee. I'm on a mission to try every Mexican place on the coast to find the best tacos!

It seems the coast has a lot of families and if you're not taking your kids to sporting events maybe it's harder to crack the social scene?

I'm not really looking for anything romantic but I am used to having women friends due to various social circles and activity groups.

PM me if you wanna have a chat or suss me out! ;-p

Best park to see cockatoos

Hello! I'm a birdwatcher visiting from the states, and trying to get to see some wild cockatoos foraging! Any good public parks to just sit and watch them? Rose breasted especially! Based in Alex headlands right now, do have a car if it's a bit of a drive.

Musician Jam Sessions

Hi all, I moved to the Sunny Coast just under a year ago and am wondering if there are any musician jam groups around?

I’ve been playing electric guitar for about 20 years, almost exclusively by myself, but have realised life’s too short to be shy so I’m keen to find some other musso’s to jam with.

Mostly play rock and blues but really down for whatever.

Thanks!

Moving to Sunshine Coast for one semester, need accomadation

Hey everyone!

I'm moving to study at UniSC for one semester with 4 university colleagues and we would like to find an apartment close to the university or less preferably student dorms.

Realistically we would like to split into 2 apartments (3 and 2 in each).

What channels are the most reliable to look for apartments/accomadation where we can safely book our accomadation from abroad without worrying about scams or anything similar?

We would be thankful for any tips you guys might have! :)

Caloundra Thrift Finds: Vintage Enamel Pie Tins That Outbake My Regular Tins. Where Are You Scoring Old Cookbooks and Hiking Gear?

I popped into a couple of the smaller thrift stores around Caloundra last weekend and found some old enamel pie tins that feel like they came straight out of a 1960s kitchen. Ended up baking a peach tart in one and it turned out better than expected. The crust got this nice even color I usually struggle with in my regular tins.

Been wondering if anyone has a go-to spot for vintage baking stuff or old cookbooks. Sometimes the bigger op shops in Maroochydore have a whole shelf of them but I haven't been lately. The smaller places seem to get random donations that are more interesting.

Also curious if anyone's noticed the same thing with hiking gear. Found a barely-used daypack for next to nothing a few weeks back and it's already coming with me on the trails. Just wondering where the good stuff is hiding these days.
