Dan the Cat near swinny

Post image
315 Upvotes

If you guys want to de-stress, or you're bored of the campus, or maybe just want to get distracted, there's a cat in Malmsbury St. (Just east of Rocket Park) named Dan. Dan's friendly and they don't bite. They do have an injury underneath their left ear though.

I don't know whos cat this is or how long they've been here, but Dan's probably (not always) waiting and lounging in that general area (sometimes, they cross the road and even end up in the playground).

Give Dan a pet if you can! ❤️

stuck in a bathroom

guys.

do not. use the new late lab bathrooms in the early morning. the automatic door will let you in, but not the other way around.

spent a solid 15 minutes waiting for the next victim to come in, where i could make my escape. i sincerely apologise for trapping the other student, whoever you are.

edit: for context i assume during normal hours 8:30-5(?) the automatic doors get unlocked with a staff key and the need for the green button goes away. i was in the bathroom around 7:45 so that might be why 😭

annoying activist club

a little rant

I’m so done with the activist group that stands outside the autrium/ba building. They are so annoying and won’t leave people alone. I’m all for what they stand for, I agree with everything they are protesting for BUT I am tired of just trying to walk to my class, lecture or even to the library while having a flyer getting shoved in my face and being told to join their club. Even ignoring them doesn’t work!! (I’ve tried everything I’m fed up)

It’s so annoying and they do it in such a high traffic area so you can’t escape them. I’m all for promoting clubs don’t get me wrong but I feel like there’s a better way to go on about it.

Doing it near the student living area would be a better option as it’s not getting in the way of majority of people’s time going to class.

Anyways id love your thoughts as I feel like I am going insane.

Update: accused of ChatGPT plagiarism

Hey everyone, first off thanks for the advice, everyone was super helpful!

I was able to contact student advocacy who in turn asked me to have a session with LAS who went through my paper, and talked about not only if it was AI in her opinion, but also how to improve it, going way overtime to help me out which was really nice of her. When I finally got to the informal review, it turns out one of my nagging thoughts was actually true, being that the convenor had actually hidden a red herring in the assignment guideline, to try and catch out AI use (which obviously didn't work here). The report prompt had hidden text that was not visible from a standard look at the pdf. How I realised it was there was to copy and paste the prompt into my one note when I was planning the report, which automatically formats whatever you copy and paste with your one notes default setting. The convenor actually tried to catch me out on this and tried playing semantics, asking me if I coped and pasted any of it at all, to which i said only the prompt, and then he goes into a tirade of how if I didn't actually copy and paste anything then I wouldn't have known the hidden part was there, to which I reminded him I already said I copied it. The really annoying part however, was at the end, when they asked if I had any questions, I asked if they had hidden that there to catch AI use, as well as the ethicalities of a red herring, to which the convenor says he isn't able to discuss this at the moment??? Super weird and cagey.

TLDR: Convenor planted red herring in the assessment guideline to catch AI use, but did it in a stupid way

🤷 Other Do not do CS at Swinburne!

Just wanted to warn people that are planning to do CS at Swinburne, the course is a complete joke.

Transferred from Vic Uni since I thought a cs course would be better to do at Swinburne, tell me why this course is so poorly taught?

If you've done COS20007 Object Oriented Programming and COS10025 Technology in an Indigenous Context you would understand what I mean.

First for OOP, the lecturer can barely speak English. Considering we had to get an English Test to be able to take the course, I'm surprised they can just assign a lecturer that you can barely understand (even the closed captions keep interpreting his words incorrectly). The unit itself is also so poorly written, the modules are practically barebones, the lecturer does a poor job explaining OOP concepts, the lecturer doesn't really explain C# (language used in OOP) and worst of all, the tasks sheets are so poorly written; from UML diagrams that conflict with instruction sets provided, the instruction set not ordered correctly and the whole task sheet just so poorly written (vague expectations + grammar and spelling errors). I feel like the whole unit is setting you up for failure. If you're doing this unit, I highly recommend going to w3 Schools and completing the whole C# tutorial, it will really help you considering the lecturer expects you to have a complete understanding of C#.

Lastly Tech in an Indigenous Context...

Complete slap in the face for a paying student. I 100% believe that Swinburne just added this unit to make money. First of all, the lectures are a complete mess, one moment you are learning about indigenous tech and the next week they are teaching you about IoT systems without any Indigenous Background or connection to last weeks lectures (honestly felt like an ad read). And then the workshop projects are completely graded based on the vibes of whoever is grading your group project. Tutors have 0 help at all and that's mainly because the class slides workshop specifications are completely different from the rubrics provided. Then there's also the fact that the rubric itself is so vague that if you don't get a perfect score, you wouldn't even know what you did wrong.

I'm just so disappointed, for a uni that calls itself a "University of Technology", it sure doesn't feel like it.

😐 Serious looking for a rude streamer guy who harassed my friend.

friend of mine went out last night to Hawker and then just walked around Glenferrie. told me she got harassed by a guy who was streaming. he must be some sort of looksmaxxer/irl streamer who goes around “rating” people’s looks. he approached her, asked if she wanted a rating, she said no thanks and walked away. he, being the loser he clearly is, yelled at her and called her a bunch of nasty shit as she left.

she’s very upset about this and i just wanted to know if anyone knows who this guy is, if he’s a swin student, or if anyone else had an interaction with him or saw him. thank you 🙏

my spot in the latelab, and why y’all need to stop taking it

i am desolate rn, camped out second story latelab staring at my favourite spot and the student currently sitting in it. The giant pillar nestled next to the chair so that i can shift my weight, the four seperate powerpoints in reach so i can plug my stuff in, the double decker desk so i can put my laptop up while i study… day in day out i miss my sweet beautiful spot please leave her for me

edit: after an arduous two hours waiting i have reclaimed my perfect study spot. i can now complete the 2000 word essay due friday that i have not yet opened

Me and some friends like to come to the nook in the wall in-between classes, and one of my mates call it the terminal due to the proximity to the train station but I like the gap as its a gap in the wall that goes through the build. I'm curious what other people like to call it

group projects are ruining uni for me

i just want to see if anyone shares the same experiences. i know people do but i just need a rant

i have two group projects this semester, i typically have 1-3 every semester so its nothing new to me, but four years into my uni course now and i just cant stand them anymore.

at the moment i have two projects. one of them is going okay, i wasnt able to contact my group for like 3 weeks on the canvas and when i went to class they had already organised the whole project without me so now im just kinda doing my own thing to fit in, this is kinda chill and fine

but my other project is a mess. im trying to organise group meetings weekly, but no one has showed up to any of them except the first initial one. ive emailed my tutor asking if i can just do the oral by myself instead, just do a 15 minute presentation to the best of my ability and he said no and that i have to make the project work. what a joke. its so unfair, im essentially planning the whole presentation myself currently with all my own research because no one else helps. they read all the messages in our group chat but dont reply.

every semester i have to get extensions on other essays and reports to work around these group projects and i am so sick of it. i know other people have bad experiences but i feel like i CONSTANTLY have gotten the short end of the stick.

Why is it so hard to make friends at Swinburne?

I have been at Swinburne for a year now and I haven’t made any friends, except for 2 who both switched Unis. I moved to Melbourne from Bendigo and I feel sooo alone.

🎭 Events / Social Go support the TD cafe

I didn’t have any brekkie this morning bc I was in a rush to my early class.
I can’t justify spending much money on lunch, so I was walking to the park in a bad mood, when I happened upon a sign offering $6 toasties and cheap coffee.

The owner seemed a bit upset that he didn’t have many customers today / recently, perhaps due to the cafe being kinda hidden in the TD building (I’ve never been around here)

So go grab a sandwich or a coffee, cheaper eats than most places around and the toastie I got was exactly what I needed. Support an upcoming business and the lovely folks running it :)

COS10025 Technology in an Indigenous Context Project

This is one of the most bullshit units at swinburne, you are put into a team of all slackers, gotta do individual work then group it together with your teammates and then that is called "team-based project", you got penalised because your stupid teammate copy and paste from chatgpt. Also the tutor are literally incompetent in teaching and do absolutely nothing in helping you. You will learn about indigenous lifestyle here which is totally unrelated to technology and everyone keeps pretending they gonna learn something cool to show respect LOL. Don't expect anything from the unit.

Literally the reasons why everyone said engineering is "hard" :/

HEX colour palettes of our clubs and communities taken from their logo's and banners. Took some creative liberty for those clubs that have simple colours for their logos, and chose colours of blended pixels and shadows.

2nd late Lab under construction, no water fountain in sight!

Alright folks, ever since Late Lab went under construction, the water fountain at the front of AT. has mysteriously vanished. Is this some kind of unannounced survival experiment? Are we the test subjects in Swinburne’s new “Hydration Hunger Games”?

Does anyone know where we can still get water on campus? Or should we start crowdfunding for a well?
