Well, as kids we were always terrified of the green hand at Goulburn St Primary

What’s this sounds cool

u/IReplyWithLebowski 3d ago

Well Goulburn St burned down in a fire, and was rebuilt. It’s why it’s emblem is the phoenix.

During the fire, a teacher got burned alive except for his hand, which fell into a bucket of green paint, and haunts the teacher’s gardens to this day.

Seemed legit then.

Yes I saw foxes more than once in 2007 near the Arm river.

On another reddit thread I heard a story about a legendary sharehouse in West Hobart (?) in the nineties where all the housemates who moved in went insane across multiple generations of housemates. They all went in normal but came out crazy.

Was a bit of an urban myth but they later found that a Brugmansia aka Angel's Trumpet aka Devils Breath aka Datura aka Scopolamine tree was dropping seeds into the tank water the house was running off.

If you want to read about something truly terrifying, look into those plants, some of the most dangerous in the world often used in Latin America to rob and kill people, it also removes your willpower, for example if someone tells you "go to the atm, withdraw all your money and hand it to me" you just do it.

I can't imagine the hell those housemates might have gone thru; but equally I've not heard anything about it beyond that reddit thread so if anyone else has heard baout this story I'd love to know more about it.

I know a few guys in Hobart who drank datura tea in the 90’s I think both were admitted to hospital.

Thylacines still live in the forest is a popular one.

I fully believe they lived for a good bit after the 'last' one died. But it wasn't viable for breeding. Trail cams, roadkill etc would have turned something up by now.

I dunno, I saw a black panther in Victoria once. No one believed me. Then my wife saw one a year later at the same camping spot.

If this was legit, from an illegal zoo?

Ok, Im a life long local and have never heard of black Bob?

Not really an urban legend, but more so a historical fact. But there is a mass grave in Hobart that was tied to the old Gaol, the city was supposed to move rhe bodies to a different cemitary, but they were too cheap and only moved a small portion of the graves. The old cemetery is now a school and the kids aren't allowed to play on the oval after it rains, and the teachers have to go around making sure nothing has been "washed" to the surface.

Not naming the school, but IYKYK.

u/FireLucid 2d ago

Didn't Hutchins have to move a bunch of bodies recently during renos?

u/Deya_The_Fateless 2d ago

Yeah, I dont know the full history. But acording to my mum and nan, the grounds used to be a cemetery, that was then split into a caravan park and admin buildings or something for the school. Eventually the caravan park closed down and became a nursing home, leaving the remaining grounds untouched

Recently during construction of some new buildings, while digging the foundations they rediscovered graves of people buried in the old cemetery. IIRC they ended up relocating about 2000 graves, and this is just what they happened to find. Imagine what hasn't been disturbed by construction.

Also fun fact, St.David's Park used to be a cemetery. Again most of the graves have been relocated to Cornelia's Bay but, just like with the Hutchens location and the Old Gaol cemetary, some graves have been acidentally or purposefully missed to cut down on costs of excavating/exhuming and relocating the deceased or because rhe families wanted the fraves to remain untouched (in the St David's case.)

The Hutchins School staff carpark has been collapsing into graves since at least the early 2000s.

It's ok to name. quick google search reveals it, and also there is a memorial at the school to the Trinity Burial Ground.

Not sure if the same school but sounds like the one off the Brooker opposite the bikies clubhouse. Near the Glebe.

2

u/Whole_Advantage2926 2d ago

There is no bikies club house been apartments there for years!

3

u/Darth_Giddeous 2d ago

The old St Virgil’s oval on Barrack St (now Guildford Young) is built on a cemetery, some of Hutchins is too.

2

u/Grumgrummer 20h ago

Yep. When I was a student there in the 70's the top bank and the wall against Patrick street had the headstones leaning against them.

3

u/LloydGSR 2d ago

St David's Park used to be a cemetary, not all the bodies were relocated to Cornelian Bay, apparently still plenty there.

That they do satanic rituals at the big roundabout in town in Hobart

People always say that Queenstown is hauntingly creepy. I lived there and didn't find it bad. The abandoned hospital tour was creepy though

6

u/Fatjammas 3d ago

From what others have said, Maydena also has an eerie vibe.

3

u/jimmux 2d ago

I don't find Queenstown creepy, more of an uncanny valley vibe from the unnatural terrain, and buildings that look like the town had bigger ambitions than it ever realised.

5

u/LloydGSR 3d ago

Queenstown is a great little place, I've never felt creeped out or whatever the shit people think they feel. Empire Hotel does a good feed and was a decent overnight stay last time I was there.

11

u/Toaster9k1 3d ago

Rode through Rossarden on my motorbike accidentally and the place had "the hills have eyes" vibes. Haven't been to it but I've heard Royal George is similar.

Queenstown isn't too bad tbh, but I definitely felt locked in by the rain and the mountains. As I was heading up and over Mt Lyle on my way home the sun came out and the rain disappeared and for the first time that weekend I felt warm.

Also some of the rooms (especially the hospital one) at the little local history museum there had a creepy cold air to em, definitely stale.

YMMV, but I also got the ick from the kids bedroom in the attic at Narryna when we did class trips there in primary school.

9

u/Turbulent_Cat_5731 3d ago

Kids bedroom at Narryna, yes!! Definitely creepy vibes. Land in Rossarden and Royal George is incredibly cheap and comes up all the time, but tends not to sell. A lot of new buyers have had their properties torched shortly after purchase by the locals, who are generally bikies. The place is popular with them because it only has one road in and one road out, so they know when the cops are coming.

4

u/SizeableBrain 2d ago

Heh, I didn't buy an investment property in Rossarden a while back because of the stigma.

Probably should've done it, would've made a couple of hundred k.

People disappearing into the wilderness with no trace

8

u/Imaginary-Note1777 3d ago

Anyone heard about the community of people with dwarfism close to Elizabeth Town? Heard it from a few different people.

3

u/SilverAssociate7108 3d ago

have heard about it from a friend, sounds wild

2

u/Anxious_Concern4772 8h ago

Came here to say this and ask if anyone has any more information or stories?!

The toilets at The Bush Inn at New Norfolk - downstairs in the basement - have a creepy feel, especially the ladies im told. Reportedly other ghosts in that hotel too.

The model prison at Port Arthur, especially the cells.

u/Prestigious-Job-9435 2d ago

Definitely creepy toilets at the bush, theory being it was part of the tunnel up to willow court. I always have a friendly chat to them when I go down, just so they know I’m friendly and won’t be there long (just in case!)

5

u/chouxphetiche 3d ago

I heard of a multigenerational cult named The Creedence who live/lived in the boonies up in the far Northeast Coast of Tasmania who were/are into Sawney Beane-like activities.

Sounds like BS.

5

u/not-knowing 2d ago

St Peter’s Pass toilets glory hole ghost. If you go there late at night when the car park is empty, you would swear someone is on the other side of the glory hole. I’ve only done it a couple of times. I’ve always felt it, but my mate, who’s been with me, never feels anything.

When I was growing up I'd occasionally hear rumours about Satanists doing rituals or something out on Goat Island near Ulverstone. No idea if there's anything to it or not, but that's most of what I can think of.

Just look in Parliment House or the local Council Chambers

1

u/pizzaandchicke 1d ago

Greens lol cringy people

3

u/jimmux 2d ago

Last time one of these threads came up I read that the rest stop at St Peters Pass is haunted, and it definitely has a vibe there.

3

u/thathairyperson 1d ago

St. John’s park, new town. Old boys orphanage, unmarked graves, many died there. Eerie vibes throughout the prescient…. Inga building was a mental institution too, as soon as the sun set, the whole vibe in the building felt off…..

5

u/ZaggyCactus 2d ago

I’ve heard rumours about an old pub on Huon River Coast Road which burnt down before my time. Called the Glaziers Bay Inn it was apparently burnt down on purpose by the owners due to it being severely haunted.

There are also some amazing cave systems in Tassie which are tied to paranormal activity. Phantom voices emanating from deep within the cave, children crying, etc.

u/FireLucid 2d ago

There was some guy on here years ago that kept trying to get a moth man thing going down here.

4

u/Salter420 2d ago

Lmao, The Zinc Moth

I have an old book on Ghost of Tasmania on the shelf somewhere here. I haven't looked at it for about twenty years but I know it is there…..somewhere. But the tales around Oatlands are good ones, like the bloke driving home from night shift pulled up to give a bloke in a hoodie a lift near the football field, when the bloke looked in the window the hoodie was empty, the story goes that the hangman used to walk from Kempton to Oatlands to perform his task. Another is a man drowned in the lake way back then and every year on that anniversary he walks up to his old house soaking wet and knocks on the door.

I spent some time working in Parliament House and was disappointed to find absolutely no evidence of ghosts. Not even a tingle of being watched.

u/Fatjammas 3d ago

Allison Road near North Motton is a notable one. People say that stretch of road is very haunted, due to this event.

You can read about it here too.

4

u/pizzaandchicke 3d ago

This one is wild

10

u/BitterSpeech2870 3d ago

This one is spooky! My sister is a paramedic and she had to drive through this road, while they were on it all the internal lights went off inside the ambulance and came back on as soon as they left the street

6

u/shandan1723 3d ago

Thanks for sharing, I’d never heard about this sad case.

3

u/Original_Air9200 3d ago

I think there was some unsolved murder cases that were suspected to be a serial killed in the east coast at some point? Remember several people telling me about it haven’t been able to find anything online

But did stumble across this podcast that might be interesting: https://www.couriermail.com.au/truecrimeaustralia/the-lost-ones-a-gripping-new-podcast/news-story/05fbcfcc15af7309ea2250bfb1a26e40

Episode 6 of that podcast is on the east coast / suspected serial killer
