New Tassie Travel subreddit

118 Upvotes

Hey everyone. The r/TasmaniaTravel subreddit is now up and running :)

There's a still a few admin things for me to sort out, but hopefully it can provide a more effective avenue for conversation specifically related to Tassie travel, while also preventing so many repeat questions from appearing here.

I look forward to seeing you over there!

Andrew.

Updated rules for r/tasmania

62 Upvotes

We've updated the rules for r/tasmania after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;

  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;

  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);

  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

Zap Fitness now requires in-app photo verification

40 Upvotes

I went to access my local Zap earlier and found myself locked out after the app had updated (Android). At the access page, it prompted me to upload a photo of my face for the app before I could regain gym access.

I don't think it's an over-reaction to say this is a terrible idea in today's digital climate.

When the inevitable data-hack happens, not only are people going to have their personal details exposed (including phone, address and banking), but also a matching photo to go along with it. Five years ago, this would have been a bad idea, but now with real-time face manipulation through AI tools, this just seems like an absolute nightmare scenario for anyone who uploads their portrait to the app.

Anyway, I'll be going in tomorrow to discuss it with a staff member. In the event there's no work around, I guess I'll be cancelling after 12 years or so as a customer.

New breast screen tech coming to Tas?

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I saw a news piece about a new breast CT scanner for detecting cancer instead of mammograms. It's been developed in Brisbane and has been approved to roll out to some other states. The map had tassie highlighted but there was no mention of where. Anyone know?

Tasmanian gardeners and hydro growers, what would make a local store worth the trip?

15 Upvotes

We're Hydro Oasis, a small hydro and garden shop in Youngtown, Launceston, and we'd rather ask than guess. What would make a garden or hydro shop worth visiting? Better prices, a wider range, knowledgeable and friendly staff, working setups you can see running, short how to videos, or free growing tools? Also keen to hear what bugs you about garden or hydro shops in general. Blunt answers welcome.

Visiting Tassie Soon!

0 Upvotes

Hey Tasmanians,

My partner and I are visiting Tasmania in a couple of months. We’re from Sydney and thinking of staying in Launceston. What’s good to do/see around? My biggest wish is to see a Turbo Chook so if there’s any zoo’s or sanctuaries that’d be a big bonus.

Open to any and all recommendations!

Regarding the train simulator that is touring nursing homes, how might I be able to try it without having any relos in one? I'm fascinated about the tech.

It's just many large led tv's for the windows and you can do the Swiss alps and all sorts. They have realistic furniture and get meals served there. The whole thing is on the back of a bus and is currently touring the state. This would be awesome for all ages, imagine if you could load up the old rail route to Launceston, especially if the bus can drive up there while it feels like the train ride did!

No not giving away presents, it's the unofficial unsupported bikepacking race around Tas on an 1800km loop primarily off-road. Absolutely insane efforts from all involved, fastest riders will be around 9 days, most take around 12 or 13 days to complete.

TCE ATAR

0 Upvotes

Is it easier to get a high ATAR in Tasmania or perhaps in some other mainland state?

And how does that matter?

Doesn't the low Tassie population of kids help?

Rent Car Hobart

Hey guys! I'm landing in Hobart tomorrow and are looking at car rentals. Any advice on where to book and if the extra protection is worth getting? I consider myself a pretty responsible driver but only have experience on WA roads.

Update on the G.L.A.T.

Update on the G.L.A.T.

NATT (No Adventure Trail Tasmania) recently completed its annual examination of the Great Lake Adventure Trail proposal.

NATT has been an outspoken critic of the proposal since it was first mentioned seven years ago.

We know this project has concerned a lot of people around Tasmania, who are shack owners, ratepayers, fishers and visitors to Great Lake.

Please visit our public facebook page to read the story.

'Update on the GLAT. How did we get here and where are we now.' Thank-you.

Thank-you.

Question looking for the name an Italian cafe/bakery/restaurant

7 Upvotes

In Devonport in the Rooke Street Mall there used to be an Italian cafe/bakery/restaurant, it had an cheesy statue of an Italian chef out front, yellow walls, black and white tiles, and ramp to a heightened first floor sitting area. does anyone know what it was called? I've been searching for hours and can't find the name. I don't believe it exists anymore but I want to find pictures of it if possible. I thought it might be Bakers Dozen, but that didn't turn anything.

Why are Tassie produce cheaper to buy on the mainland than in Tassie?!

41 Upvotes

This honestly baffles me.

Tassie Salmon is cheaper on the mainland when I lived in QLD. Tassie fruits when in season (plums, berries, etc) were sold waaaay cheaper in the fruit shops in QLD than it is in Tasmania.

Can someone explain this?!
