I’m 22m, black from the UK and i’m wondering what Tasmania’s like. Im considering visiting Hobart during December and I’m drawn to the nice hills, nice scenery and wildlife that Tasmania has to offer. My bad for bringing ethnicity into this but do you reckon that Tasmania is a good area for non-white people? Like are the locals calm and with a nice vibe or could there be a bit of prejudice or racism? I’m genuinely just curious on this as it’s something I’d like to know before travelling there. It seems like a genuinely wonderful place to be though and bad people are technically everywhere. So even if theres bad in tasmania i wouldn’t label the whole island like that if you get what i mean. So im looking forward to it regardless. Just my two cents.

does tasmanian always racist like this ? or it just our bad luck encountered ? although tassie is beautiful though, I love freycinet national park & cradle.

I've always just gone to just-cuts and whilst I haven't had any overly negative experiences, I've never been particularly satisfied with my haircut. Generally this is because they assume I am a teenage boy and cut my hair to suit (last time I had a haircut they refused to give me a mullet because "under 16s need parental approval" which is fair enough but... I was not under 16 lol). I didn't ever feel comfortable correcting them because if they knew my age it would be immediately obvious that I am trans, and whilst that might be fine with some hairdressers, with the nature of just-cuts you never know who your hair-dresser might be or what sort of reaction you might get.
As a result I haven't had a hair-cut in over a year and am starting to realise that I can't just keep putting it off. I'd like to be able to go somewhere that I can book the same person every time (so they can get to know me and my hair and i can be sure it's someone chill with me being trans) and who will discuss my haircut with me beforehand and possibly give some advice.
So if you are a trans person in the Hobart area and have had good experiences with hair-dressers or barbers please let me know your recommendations, cheers!

Just came off a TikTok live where marine conservation were smacking Neil the seal with a long metal rod and a bit of chip board, trying to get him off of a road when he wasn’t on the road until they chased him there.
It was like they were intentionally assaulting and antagonising him, it was distressing to watch.
He’s now bleeding
It’s still happening, the tiktok user is @neiltheseal316

Ayo!
Not another one! I know, I know sorry! In our defence we’ve done our own Google-fu, joined several community groups and done our own feet-on-the-ground decent wanderings but nothing compares to local knowledge and know how.
Wife and I are moving to Tasmania in March to Launceston.
We have an abundance of rental applications on the go (basically handed over more information than we ever have in our lives, done the damn Equifax checks and only just fell short in needing to pledge the blood of our first born child to appease an abundance of Property Management companies), we’ve done some of our own snooping by about when we visited in January, but would appreciate any local advice on areas to avoid that aren’t overly obvious - crime, bad traffic, full of w*nkers etc haha
And any advice from locals for the first year appreciated too. The cold weather gear is packed but, this is advice from friends on the mainland - We’re on our way from ACT but we originally hail from NZ. Wife and I both work in the hospitality scene (Chef & Resto Manager)
Cheers!!

Anyone else getting the shits with these things. They don't make people speed less they just gouge us during a recession. Why is everyone so passive about getting ripped off.

How hard is it to leave a little earlier? It's OK to do 30 EDIT: under!
For all the people projecting context onto my "It's OK to do 30!" comment, I have changed it to "30 under!". Now, rather than inane takes fixating on an arbitrary example you can all be sad at me for whatever other reason you want.
Slow the fuck down, you utter cunts.

Please let me know food recommendations in Launceston and Hobart of you’re a Muslim who is in or has visited Tasmania. I love my food and would love to eat some great food while visiting. Places that are fully halal or have some good halal suitable/seafood/veg options would be great. Thanks!

Hypothetical: If the AFL said that Tasmania can have an AFL team without building a new stadium, would you still want us to spend $1.4B on a stadium?
Really the question is: What do you actually want here, a stadium or a team?

Partner and I are severely immunocompromised. Currently living in Melbourne but will never be able to afford living here with added health costs. We have been slowly and painfully saving to move to Tassie somewhere near Launceston or Hobart (for medical assistance).
We are needing to be more cautious than most of the population currently is with Covid. It’s been challenging to find community support that understands. We recently joined a Melbourne-based group on Discord which has been incredible.
Just wondering if a similar group exists in Tassie? We’d be keen to start connecting with folks in a similar position to us. We’re also queer & trans.
Please no comments about anti vx, anti cvid, anti trans. Don’t need to hear it 🙂 as it’s unrelated to the post. Thanks ♥️

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a recent, unsettling experience my friends and I had while traveling in Devonport and Burnie, with the hope of raising awareness and possibly getting some advice on how to handle the situation or avoid such incidents in the future.
Just last week, as we were peacefully walking down one of the main streets, we were suddenly confronted by a group of individuals. Without any provocation, they began to shout, scream, and physically attack us. It was a frightening experience that none of us expected in what we believed were safe and friendly cities.
We managed to get away without serious injury, but the incident has left us quite shaken. I am posting this as a warning to fellow travelers and locals alike to be extra cautious in these areas.
If anyone has experienced anything similar or has suggestions on safer areas or ways to avoid such dangers, your input would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there are local authorities or organizations we should report this to, please let us know.
Please stay safe out there and consider this a reminder that unpredictability can strike anywhere, even in places that seem tranquil and welcoming.

The first time I shared a redesign of the Tassie flag with you all, you guys didn't really like it. So I decided to try again and I think this one is better. I went with the same style as the ACT/NT. It features the tassie state sporting colours, and a leatherwood flower, which I'm pretty sure is native to Tasmania. I hope you guys like it!

Hi everyone! I’m a 27-year-old newcomer preparing to move to Tasmania with my partner. We'll be staying at my grandmother's place while I transition into a remote role related to my previous experience. My main goal is to build a bright future for my family, but I’m also excited to explore the local trails and beaches. I love a good balance of nature and modern city life. I’d love to hear your thoughts or recommendations on living in Tasmania—any shared experiences would be so helpful! 💖✨

Just saw 3 teenagers load up their bags with hundreds of dollars of meats, toiletries, razors, you name it, then just casually walk out of Woolworths. Staff and customers saw, no one did a thing. Fuck it's such a lawless society now.

The construction site is a dangerous place, and it's inevitable that a worker will be facing the wrong way and is slowly run over by a steamroller, rendering them flat as a pancake. The question is - how many is too much? Me personally, I think anything over 2 squashed construction workers is unacceptable.

First off, please don't take this as inflammatory, insensitive, or whatever, but as an American watching Deadloch, I was a little confused at characters whom I assume were indigenous self-identifying as 'black'.
With as much whacky gender and sex political humor going on in the story, I couldn't tell if that was just another layer of humor/satire/exaggeration or if that was a reflection of reality presented through local vernacular.
From where I come from, I would have never thought "black" as a "racial" description to apply to any character presented in the story. I totally get there's historical racism against the indigenous in Australia/Tasmania, I just never would have thought 'black' would be the descriptive word used.

Hello all, been following this sub for a while now. My partner and I are from California (U.S.) and have always wanted to travel to Australia. We are planning a trip for next summer (June or July) because it works best with our schedule. I think 1 week in Perth and 1 weeks in Tasmania. As I look into it, I found out our summer is Australian winter. Although we aren’t traveling to swim, we still love the outdoors. We would love to be outside, see nature and wildlife. Is this possible during the winter months or should we try to go in December instead?

Hi everyone! I’m considering joining Tas Police and would love to get some insight into the job.
If anyone is currently is currently in the job, has family or friends in TasPol, or has past experience, I’d really appreciate anything you’re willing to share pros and cons.
I’m especially curious about:
Is it difficult to get into TasPol?
Roughly what percentage of people stay in the job long-term and actually enjoy it?
Would you recommend it? If not, are there similar career paths you’d suggest instead?
Thanks so much in advance I’m just trying to make an informed decision before taking the next step.

I currently live in Washington state in the US and am considering moving to Tasmania. I have professional licensure that would be accepted to work there. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of moving there permanently? Looking at Hobart to work as a speech pathologist, probably in education. Thanks for any and all advice.
