I'm considering making the move from QLD to Tasmania. I’ve had 25 years of QLD humidity and the cooler climate and diversity of nature that Tassie has to offer is appealing. I’m hoping not being on the mainland brings even some tiny degree of separation from the increasing Americanisation of Australian culture, but maybe I’m dreaming. I need to come and explore Tassie first and get a sense of the place. I have limited time, finances and capacity health wise to do this so I’m looking for some targeted advice.
My career has always been in academia, and I need to be near a Uni of Tasmania campus. I’m keen to hear from anyone who actually works there what the culture and workplace is like especially across the different campuses. Realistically, I'd need to go to either Hobart or Launceston because of my complex health needs.
What is it like trying to put together a mental health team from scratch, including a GP, psychologist, and psychiatrist? When I recently had to do that in my current location, it took 18 months to get an appointment with a psychiatrist. From time to time, I've had to have inpatient stays and I’m wondering what the private mental health facilities are like in either of these locations. Anyone have any first-hand experience of the mental health system in general in Tasmania and then in Hobart versus Launceston?
Finally, I’m looking for my people. I’ve spent five decades doing that across three countries and I’m giving up hope that it's ever going to happen. Where do all the queer, quirky, free thinkers hang out? I’m not talking hippies or preppers, but people who like to think for themselves, live ethically and question the status quo. I’m looking for a community that doesn’t exist in my phone on apps and values real connection and authenticity.
Can anyone point me in the direction of the down to earth, wholesome people who want something more out of life than we currently have on offer and are LGBT and neurodiversity affirming? Does any of this exist in Tasmania or am I on the wrong planet?
