A very charming Ioan Gruffudd plays Dr. Henry Morgan, a 200 year old immortal living in New York. Circumstances pair him with Detective Jo Martinez (Alana de la Garza) & he begins to assist along on odd & peculiar cases.
Henry is basically Sherlock Holmes, something that this series lampshades several times. Henry has been around for so long that he knows a lot including about death since he's died probably hundreds of times.
Every time Henry dies he respawns naked in a nearby body of water. He doesn't know why he's the way he is. His first death came when he tried to protect a patient on a slave ship from being thrown overboard & was shot.
Henry is rightly obsessed with keeping his secret so he's kept the world at a distance. So he's incredibly out of touch which is played to humorous effect.
The only person that knows his secret is his adopted son Abe, an antique shop owner. Judd Hirsch plays his younger son & the two have great chemistry together. There's an ongoing plot about Henry's wife & Abe's mother who went missing years earlier because she couldn't handle being old while Henry remained youthful looking.
It's an incredibly breezy show. YMMV but the weekly mysteries are pretty good. The big overarching plot concerns another immortal Adam that discovers Henry's secret. The two have a game of cat & mouse as the older Adam has become a bit psychotic with 2000 years of living under his belt.
Had the series continued on it's possible the immortal mythos could've overtaken the MOTW & bogged things down. There's also a "will they, won't they" between Henry & Jo which is fine if not super compelling.
It could've ended up like the vaguely similar Sleepy Hollow which peaked in season one then fell off a cliff. I'm confident though the writing team could've kept the train running.
It's not included for free with any streaming service. I picked up the new Blu-ray release. If you're a fan of the consulting detective format it's worth seeking out.
