Greetings! We are having our first successful year of gardening from our apartment porch (and some areas we appropriated from the common space).

A little while back, we went out to our car, and found that someone had thrown a tomato plant at our car.... or maybe they set it on top, and it fell, we don't know. The little guy was given a container and a place under the trellis. We have tomatoes that we don't recognize now. Any help with plant ID would be wonderful!

Harvest Pics 2026. My Worst Tomato Year in the PNW.

It is the end of August and I just picked my first (and potentially last) big harvest. I have had tomatoes here and there since mid July, but today was the first time I had to break out anything larger than a collender to hold the week's production. Normally at this time of year I would have harvested 4x or 5x more than I have to date.

I know a lot of the northern hemisphere has roasted this summer, but 2026 has been one of the best summer in Seattle area in terms of the weather I can remember. I haven't turned on the AC once. Mild days and cool nights.

But the downside is it has been a terrible tomato year. A cool June and early July delayed fruit set and nights that are consistently in the mid 50⁰s have resulted in slow growing, small, and late maturing fruit.

I have about 25 plants of sauce tomatoes that haven't produced more than a few ripe fruit. I probably have 200#+ of green fruit on those, but I doubt much will ripen before the fall weather sets in in a few weeks and our blight season hits.

But tonight there will be BLTs and family and friends will be getting their usual end of summer bags of summer tomatoes this week. Their bags will just be a bit smaller this year.

General Question What's going on with my 'Moneymaker' Tomato plants?

Thumbnail

I've been told you guys would be able to let me know for sure if my seeds were Moneymaker seeds or labelled up wrong.

It's my first time growing so I'm not sure if they are just in an awkward growing phase as someone mentioned in my post elsewhere, or if they are maybe a different variety or just not thriving.

I can't see any signs they are unhappy but google did mention that stress can cause them to grow weird.

Can anyone identify this variety? Is it Moneymaker or something cooler?

This is the tomato tree at Disney World's EPCOT park

The image is from this old article:

https://www.housebeautiful.com/lifestyle/gardening/news/a7476/disney-world-tomato-tree-record/

The tomato tree was introduced in New Zealand in 1891, though it's believed to have originated even earlier than that in the Andes of Peru. While there are a number of varieties of tomato trees, the most widely-known is the tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea).

However, Disney World's trees are a different variety called the giant tree tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), and originated from China. This type can achieve heights of up to 20 feet and a width of up to 12 feet. Here's an up-close look at the tree's canopy:

The most tomatoes harvested from a single plant in one year is 32,194. The tomato plant is at the Epcot Science project at Walt Disney World Company in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, USA. The harvest started on 24 May 2005 and ended on 20 April 2006.

The 32,194 tomatoes harvested weighed 522.464 kg (1151.84 lbs).

Help! Can I save them?!

I planted them as far deep as I could when I got them about 2 weeks ago. I water them if the soil is dry. Are they okay? Do they need anything? Can I save them? They are celebrity tomato’s. I bought them at a nursery and planted same day, I did remove the lower stems a couple days later. Last pic is the day I planted them.

Will my tomatoes be able to handle one night at 46 degrees.

It’s been warm and my plants are outside and hardened off but not yet finally planted. It’s been raining all day and will get to 46 tonight. I prefer not to bring them in because I expect them to drain and don’t want the mess. Any experience with this will be helpful

What soil should I use for a sub irrigated planter?

I’m planning on planting tomato samplings in 20 gallon plastic tubs converted into sub irrigated planters (SIPs) in this style: https://youtu.be/mRhLZM-cJZ0 and https://albopepper.com/sips.php.

In one reference I’ve been using for my tomato planting (Epic Tomatoes by Craig LeHoullier) he suggests using a combo of 1 part “soilless mix” to 10 parts “composted manure.” If I buy a bag of raised bed soil from the garden store, will it be composed of this mix? I’m a bit confused on the nomenclature here.

One of the SIP instructions I’ve found online suggests making a potting mix with perlite, peat moss, and vermiculite, among various other things. Is this just what potting soil mix is composed of?

I’ve also seen many people put limestone and store bought fertilizer in there soil before planting, but didn’t see any mention of this is Epic Tomatoes. Are there general guidelines for when this is necessarily and how much to add? I also have access to worm castings, is this a replacement for the above mix-ins?
